Bakht Singh

Bakht Singh Chabra (1903 - 2000). Indian evangelist, church planter, and Bible teacher born in Joiya, Punjab (now Pakistan), to a devout Sikh family. Educated at Punjab University, he studied agricultural engineering in England (1926-1928) and Canada (1929-1932), embracing a Western lifestyle, including smoking and drinking, while rejecting his Sikh roots by shaving his hair. Initially hostile to Christianity—once tearing a Bible apart—he converted in 1929 in Winnipeg after reading the New Testament, influenced by Christian friends John and Edith Hayward. Returning to India in 1933, he began preaching as an Anglican evangelist, later becoming independent, sparking the 1937 Martinpur revival, a pivotal movement in Indian Christianity. In 1941, after a night of prayer in Chennai, he founded Hebron Ministries, establishing over 10,000 indigenous churches modeled on New Testament principles across India and South Asia. Singh authored books like How I Got Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory and held annual “Holy Convocations” in Madras, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kalimpong, drawing thousands. Married to Rama Bai at age 12 in 1915, little is recorded of their personal life. His contextualized gospel, blending Indian spirituality with biblical truth, earned him the title “Elijah of the 21st Century” in Indian Christendom. The word was spoken by the Greeks who had come to Jerusalem to worship. They had come at the time of the Passover feast. Now the Passover feast was a shadow of the death of Lord Jesus Christ. And now God has ordained that people may understand in a very clear way how far their sins somebody must lie. And even though for centuries they had observed that feast, they never knew its meaning. There is no other person in the whole world of that nature. There have been many many great speakers, preachers, have said wonderful things. But their words were forgotten. But now find out how many books have been and are being written about the words and the saying of Lord just died. Many many books. And yet, they have not exhausted the meaning of those words. And yet, they have not exhausted the meaning of those words. Still you can go on digging and digging and digging and find something new, the whole time. Every word. Now see how every word is pegged for the purpose. Now these men have come with a request of the Greek Lord just died. The Lord says, my child, I will not only forgive your sins, I will give you all my kingdom. You ask, I receive from my hands. But we don't know how to ask. Even the disciples of Lord Jesus Christ never knew how to ask. Even though they were with him for three years, Our Lord is now saying in John 16, And verse 24, He said to them, have ye asked nothing in my name? Ask and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. Now they thought they have asked many things. They thought they have asked many things from the Lord. Look at Luke 17. And in Luke 17, John says, Lord, even devils are subject unto us in thy name. Luke 17. Even devils are subject unto us. They were so happy. They came jumping with joy. See what we have done in the name of our Master. And see what we saw. But our Lord says, You have to have nothing in my name. In other words, They were only asking for those things which could not be fulfilled. So Lord, why are you asking all this? And learn to ask. All of us have to learn that lesson also. We don't know yet how to ask from our Lord. There will be no asking again and again. But our Lord will give us much more than we could think or imagine or do so. Now our Lord knew the heart of those men of Greek. Now our Lord knew the heart of those men of Greek. How with a real satisfaction, they have come to see Him. They were not like Pharisees, only came to find fault. Others only came to be healed by Him out of favour. They only wanted to have a look at Him. They were just by seeing His face, their families, they were so happy. And they came to everybody in whole Greece. Now we have seen such a wonderful man, very close to Master. And He was talking about death. He was 32. And I, if I lift up some alert, will draw all the men unto me. This is a signifying that he should die. So if you are clear here, when our Lord was saying those words to His disciples, The whole time His mind was upon death. And how He was going to be glorified by dying. So He was saying to those people, And that's why I have come into the world. So that man may see the glory of the great God through me. But He said, if you want to see me, Then for the very purpose I must die. Like the corn of wheat. Then He said, You will not only see me, You will become like me. He said, You will become like me. That's why you go like a filthy dirty beggar to see a king. Imagine you are putting on those filthy dirty garments, never washed, never changed for 45 years. And the hair is very very long, never cut for 35 years. And no bath for 25 years. Imagine such a man going before a king. Your majesty, I want to see your face only for one minute. Anything says. You come inside my mind. Then you bring the barber first of all. Again very nice haircut. Also haircut too. Then you garments. And then you crown upon the head. Then you go outside. And you go as my prince. How will you feel at that time? He came as a filthy dirty beggar. Now coming out of palace like a prince. With a kingly garment. The very same thought here. Now he says, You only want to see me for a few minutes. I want to make you like myself. How is possible? Then he says, Have you ever seen the corn of wheat falling on the ground? Have you ever seen the corn of wheat falling on the ground? And then what have you seen? How many hundreds of similar grains come out of one dying grain? Yes, this thing is being seen everywhere in the world. One dying grain bringing forth hundreds of same kind of grains. One dying grain bringing forth hundreds of same kind of grains. And that's why I must die. And then not only Greeks, Then all men and all those will see me forever and ever. But we have to become partakers of the death of Lord Jesus Christ. Then at the same time came Munuswamy, Muthuswamy, Doudswamy. Now the same John has become Munuswamy, Muthuswamy, Doudswamy. The same John. The change of name, the change of garment won't make us Christians. Allah said, I'll make you like myself. As our Lord said, I'll make you like myself. The wheat must produce wheat and not barley. But we have to produce wheat and not barley. Now when the wheat dies, then you must have the same kind of grain in the whole stock. For many, many centuries, many have been blinded about the cross, plodding aside. But the word of God says, In 1 Corinthians 1 and 18, In 1 Corinthians 1 and 18, We have the class of a foolishness, which has failed in the power of God. We have the class of a foolishness, which has failed in the power of God. Those who are saved by the power of God, have the power of God. Number 24 again. The power of God and the wisdom of God. See, because of sin, all men became fools and weak. All of us are fools before God. And extremely weak. And extremely weak. That's what sin does. And that's why we go on doing foolish things, saying foolish things. Wasting money, wasting energy. On the one hand, you work very hard to earn money. On the other hand, you work very hard to earn money. And by the same hand, you also burn it. By our own hands, we bring misery upon life. Now God has planned to make us wise and strong. Lord Jesus Christ. And that the wisdom and the power come only, only, only in the cross. But this wisdom and this power comes only through the cross. So our Lord said, If I be lifted up, I will draw all men to me. See how foolishly men have tried to draw men by their preaching or by their works. Or by their chatting. Or by their eating. Or by their work. Or by their drinking. And that's why you see, you feel barrenness in many parts of the world. This is the reason why But those who have seen the cross, and has experienced it, they are completely transformed. And go on being transformed, till they become a logic of favour. They are mainly like the artist who draws pictures without knowing what they are doing. There was one artist, he drew a picture of Lord Yudhishtira. He drew a picture of Lord Yudhishtira, as if he was on a cross. But he being a Jew, he had absolutely no faith in the cross. And after some years, he began to paint a portrait of a young girl in the same studio. When the girl came to the studio, he saw the painting of Lord on the cross. He asked the artist, who is that on the cross? He said, you don't disturb me now. I want to draw your portrait. He had to come everyday for the same purpose. He again said, who is that, who is that, who is that? In the end, he had to tell her the story of the cross. And he told her in a few words. How he died, how he forgave everybody. Then one day, the same artist got a message from the same jungle. Please come and see me, I am dying. So he went. Then he saw a very shining face on death bed. And the girl said to the artist, Mr. Artist, I want to thank you with all my heart for showing me the way of salvation. He said, my time is very near. But I know, my Lord forgave my sins. I was a great sinner. He said to her, how could he forgive your sins? Then she told him, from the time you told me the story in your studio, I became restless. I began to see my sins. And I saw, he also died for my sins. I confessed my sins. Now I know, he has forgiven my sins. And she said, it was because of you, I met my saviour. And that is why I want to thank you before dying. Having said that, very peacefully he slept. The artist said, they were all the same painting of the cross in my studio for many many years. I never knew this message. But now I know the power of the cross. Then he also repented. Oh Lord, I thank you for my sins. I never knew. Oh Lord, I thank you for my sins. I never knew. And then he spent many years in painting a new portrait of the cross, Lord Jesus Christ. After many many years were finished. And all these words at the bottom. This I did for thee. What have you done for me? Then he also died very peacefully. Then the very same painting of the cross was brought in our gallery of Berlin, Germany. You know in the western countries, they pay very high price for the old well known painting. So that painting found its way in a very well known gallery of Germany. He came in search of some good paintings and placed them in his palace in Durga. That's how he saw every painting. Then he gave that paragraph. And as he kept looking, he came to the painting of the crucifix. And the words at the bottom drew his attention. This I did for thee. What have you done for me? That wealthy crown could not move from that painting. The more he saw the nail pierced hand, the nail pierced teeth, that crown caught up on the head and the words again came to him. It was so livingly painted. If you feel some person standing by and saying again and again, this I did for thee. This I did for thee. Give my hands for thee. Give my feet for thee. Give my back for thee. Give my back for thee. Give my face for thee. Give my head for thee. Give my head for thee. What has thou done for me? And that wealthy crown could not move from there. For me, for me, for me. And he saw all the sins on my body. I for myself. And the tears rolled on his cheeks. Weeping and weeping and weeping for ourselves. Till the watchman came, sir, now I was so home and so late. I loved so much. He bought that painting. He came to his house. And he sold all that he had for gospel sake. All the property that he had, the Lord, you did for me. All the property that he had, the Lord, you did for me. You have done so much for me. He died, I may die to my wretched sinful nature. He died, I may die to my wretched sinful nature. He died, I may die to the world. He died, I may die to my sinful nature. He died to put an end to old creation. When you cut the root of the tree, it will fall down. Similarly, my love of the creator, he made us. When he died, all died. He died to put an end to old creation. And fifthly, he died to become my living bread. And sixthly, he died to make us one body, make us one family. And seventhly, he died to make us entirely new, like himself. He died to make us entirely new, like himself. All these truths become clear to us. When by faith we looked at the cross of Lord Jesus Christ. But this evening, I won't go further. Only one request. Learn to look at the cross Lord Jesus Christ. Learn to look at the cross Lord Jesus Christ. The Greeks said, Sir, we would see Jesus. Lord was saying, Oh my dear friend, You want to see me? Then first of all, be a partaker of my death. Like the grain of the wheat dying in the ground. Now no man can die to himself. No man can die to himself. You can try any means. And don't see any man, any woman for many many days. And live in some dark room. Then they will die to themselves. Then it became worse. You will never die by any means. You will never die by any means. By faith, we receive into us the death glorified. See, for example, Many have been tried to give up tobacco by many many offers. After one week, When they go to the latrine, The stomach says, I am busting, I am bloating, I am bloating. Please give me only one puff. And don't tell your wife, anybody about it. This is enough, but when we see our Lord cross, It may be any habit, any vice, any sin, any crime. It goes away in a second. By the inward working of the power of the cross, Lord Jesus Christ. Then you will give a new eye. Then you will get a new eye. Then you see the Lord in a new way. Everyday something new, something new. See, for example, Before marriage, Before marriage, they meet almost everyday. When they are engaged, I will put it on. When they are arranged, they meet equally. Some meet in a formal way, some meet in a formal way. And they dream about the nose and the teeth and so on. They also dream about the eyes, nose, eyes, mouth and so on. You see, in the beginning, they are only attracted by the outward things. Before marriage, they were attracted only by the outward appearance. But after marriage, they don't see outward things. They begin to see inward virtue. Maybe outward, much ugliness. But inside, so many virtues. And they go on seeing something more, something more. And then for many, many years, Then they go to a photographer. Then they go to a photographer. After many years, And they look like brothers and sisters. But before marriage, Before marriage, There was a big difference between the two. Were you born in the same family? We see a lot of lattice now. There is a mutual exchange. As you see more and more, All can see in us the very life along this line. And eventually, we shall be like Him. But the work begins at the cross. Without the cross, we can't see Him. You may see miracles. You may see dreams. But you won't see the Lord. Till you come at the cross. And know by faith and by revelation, What He did for you on the cross. Then you can see Him always. See Him everyday. In a new heavenly glory. There are some women, They change their sarees five times a day. Some even seven times a day. Go on changing for purposes. They change their sarees again and again. And then something new everyday also. So many months also. And you can say very proudly, I have got enough sarees to change everyday for two months. But my Lord, He gives me Himself a new everyday. In a new garment. Oh, what a joy. We see Him and become like Him. Have you learnt? Look at His cross. If not, come now. If not, come now. Now shall we pray. And please do not move during prayer. We will be thankful to you. Please do not give trouble to anybody. And mighty God, In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, We thank you once again for this evening. Thank you for your loving presence. And all who came to receive your word. And now we pray. Amen.
