Erlo Stegen

Erlo Hartwig Stegen (1935 - 2023). South African missionary and revivalist of German descent, born on Mbalane farm near Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, to Hermannsburg missionary descendants. Raised Lutheran, he left school after grade 10 to farm but felt called to ministry in 1952, evangelizing rural Zulus under apartheid. After 12 years of preaching with few lasting conversions, he experienced a transformative revival in 1966 at Maphumulo, marked by repentance and reported miracles. In 1970, he founded KwaSizabantu Mission (“place where people are helped”) in Kranskop, which grew into a self-sustaining hub with farms, a water bottling plant, and schools, serving thousands. Stegen authored Revival Among the Zulus and preached globally, establishing churches in Europe by 1980. Married with four daughters, he mentored Zulu leaders and collaborated with theologian Kurt Koch. His bold preaching drew 3 million visitors to KwaSizabantu over decades.

I beg you so that you go to a place where you don't like to go. I think I've got to leave now a great portion of my message and draw to the close. When revival broke out, the walls of Jericho fell down. In 1966, God started with the strongholds of evil. He started with a witch. And after the service, they told me there was a witch outside. She'd like to be prayed for. I said, bring her in. They said, no, she won't come in. So I went to her. And I said, what would you like? She said, I want you to pray for me. That the demons that are in my life will come out. She says, I've got Ozzy, that's the spirit of the dead father. She says, I've got D.E.D., that's when the evil spirit speaks inside. I've got Zizwes, that are nations. If a person has got those demons, he can speak in languages he's never heard before. She mentioned five different demons. Sometimes Christians don't know their sins. But the witches and the witch doctors, they know the demons that are in their life. So I said, come to me to my office. I called five co-workers. We sat in a circle in my office. And she sat there as well. And then we started singing a song. It was an Easter song. That Jesus has risen from the dead. That he's alive. All power is given to him. He conquered the devil. He conquered death. He conquered sin. And we repeatedly sang that song. The people in South Africa, when they come together and sing, they are poor. They haven't got much instruments. They depend on their vocal cords. But it's nice to hear them singing from the heart. And as we sang, praising God and his victory on the cross, and his precious blood. Suddenly that witch stood up. And she went in the middle of the circle. And she went on her knees and her hands. And then she looked like a tiger who was ready to jump upon the neck of the sickle. One of the Christians got up and wanted to run out. I said, don't run out. Jesus has overcome the devil. Jesus is victorious. And we carried on praying. All of a sudden, the demons started to speak in her. They started barking like a dog. My brother had a big, great dane dog. And the dog was outside and heard the barking of the dogs inside. And ran to the window. But these weren't dogs, they were demons. And they said, we won't leave this person. We said, you've got to leave. And they said, now that the Spirit of God has come, we are burning. In Acts we read that John the Baptist was the greatest of all men born of women. There's never been a man greater than him. Not even Elijah. Not Isaiah. Not Moses. But this man did no miracle. He never raised a deed. Why was he so great? Because Jesus said, I baptize you with water. But the man who comes after me, he will baptize you with water and with the Holy Spirit, with a fire. If I ask people sometimes, have you been baptized? They say, yes. I say, nice. Have you been baptized with fire? Then he says, oh, I don't know. But the baptism of fire is greater than the baptism of water. That's why John the Baptist said, the man who comes after me is much greater than what I am. I baptize you with water, he will baptize you with fire. And these demons told us, the fire of the Holy Spirit is present. That's why we've come to be. And those demons came out of that woman, screaming through the sky. And then suddenly, many pigs started making a noise. Now you can imitate one pig, but you can't imitate many pigs. Screaming, making a noise. And after that, when those demons were out, suddenly, those demons started to speak to us. And said, we are men of war. We are strong warriors. We are 300 men. We won't come out of this person. This witch had a training center for young witches. And we said, you've got to leave. In the name of Jesus, we are leaving. Then they said, we are burning. Because of the fire of the Holy Spirit. And then the first 100 left. Screaming through the air. And then the second 100 left. And then the third 100 left. And then this woman, you know, all witches have got a nice face. They don't look beautiful. But when the demons had left, the glory of God Jesus could be seen in her face. And she said, oh Lord Jesus, how good that you've set me free. I thank you for breaking the chains of hell. Because she told me, when she came, I am bound. Chains of hell. Hands and feet. Can Jesus set me free? We said, yes, Jesus can set you free. And she smiled with a heavenly smile as if she had lived in the presence of the Lord Jesus for many years. And she was free. After her, the next one came. Then the witch doctor came. God started with a stronghold of evil. And he shook that place. And one after the other came. They came day and night. There were no church bells ringing. No watchers. They would come at any time. Sometimes early in the morning. Sometimes at midday. And we saw the divine magnetism. The spirit that worked at Pentecost. And brought the people together. Convicting them of sin. No man did it. Just God in heaven. And to this day, he is still doing it. I don't know of a day when people have not come. Even in this time. This year and last year. We had about 4,000 men. Only men, I don't count the women and children. 4,000 men. Some very learned. And some not very well studied. They come from all over. Most of them are drug addicts. Some of them are satanists. Some of them all are murderers. Criminals. Having been in prison for many years. Because of murdering. That was their life. To murder people. And they come without being invited. I invite you, if you'd like to, you can come to South Africa. And see it for yourself. People of all nations. Black and white. And it doesn't take long. Then they get to know the Lord Jesus as their Savior. We don't let them stay for longer than 2 or 3 weeks. Because we haven't got room for all the people. Paul said, I'm not ashamed of the gospel of Christ. It's the power of God. Dear friends, there's nothing like the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. One man with God. It's conquering. Even if the whole world goes against him. All the people go against him. One man with Christ is in the majority. And he said, all power is given to me. In heaven and on earth. That's why go and preach the gospel. He didn't say, go because I died for you. Of course, that is included. But he said, because all power is given to me and I'll be with you. Dear friends, I've shared with you quite a few things. And I've spoken about 2 hours. Not quite. But close to 2 hours. If you want to revive, don't pray for the heathen, pray for yourselves. When Jesus carried the cross, the women came and they cried and they wept. He said, daughters of Jerusalem, don't cry for me. Cry for yourselves and your children. Dear friends, where are our children? Will you be able to say before judgment day, on judgment day before the throne of God, here I am with all the children you have given me. And Jesus said, don't cry for me, cry for yourselves. Now friends, I want to get to the close of my message. I hope that I have made it clear. God's Spirit is the Holy Spirit. And if we want him to work in supernatural power, there mustn't be anything in our lives that grieves him. That he's grieved, he's not happy. Don't grieve the Spirit of Christ in you. Don't be in Jesus' way, let him move as he likes. Crown him as Lord of all. Let Jesus be the first and the last in your life. If that is true, you won't need to pray for revival. Revival will come on its own. When God's people humble themselves, turn from their wicked ways, and seek the Lord, he'll forgive, and he will heal their land. God has put our land into our hands. It depends on you whether the land will be healed or not. I hope that you've understood that. Don't say, I'm not a man. I know when my mother was still alive, she would tell us we were five boys. She says, oh my boys, if I would only be a boy, if I only would be a man, I'd know what to do. It doesn't matter whether you're a man or a woman, a girl or a boy, in Psalms we read that in the last days, God will send many people. It says, great was the company of those that preached the gospel. And in Hebrew, it doesn't say men, it says female, the women. God can use girls as well. It doesn't matter whether you're young or old, listen to the message of the greatest man, John the Baptist. He says, that which is crooked, make it straight. The valleys, fill them up and make a highway. And the holes on the way, fill them. Let's make a highway for our God. We pray, God send revival, save our country. If we'd have ears to hear, we'd hear him say, I would like to do that more than you wanted, but I can't, because you haven't prepared the way for me. So, let us prepare the way for our God, to come down in power. The Bible speaks the day of his power. Sometimes the sun shines, but you can't look straight into it. Sometimes, just vaguely.
