Bakht Singh

Bakht Singh Chabra (1903 - 2000). Indian evangelist, church planter, and Bible teacher born in Joiya, Punjab (now Pakistan), to a devout Sikh family. Educated at Punjab University, he studied agricultural engineering in England (1926-1928) and Canada (1929-1932), embracing a Western lifestyle, including smoking and drinking, while rejecting his Sikh roots by shaving his hair. Initially hostile to Christianity—once tearing a Bible apart—he converted in 1929 in Winnipeg after reading the New Testament, influenced by Christian friends John and Edith Hayward. Returning to India in 1933, he began preaching as an Anglican evangelist, later becoming independent, sparking the 1937 Martinpur revival, a pivotal movement in Indian Christianity. In 1941, after a night of prayer in Chennai, he founded Hebron Ministries, establishing over 10,000 indigenous churches modeled on New Testament principles across India and South Asia. Singh authored books like How I Got Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory and held annual “Holy Convocations” in Madras, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kalimpong, drawing thousands. Married to Rama Bai at age 12 in 1915, little is recorded of their personal life. His contextualized gospel, blending Indian spirituality with biblical truth, earned him the title “Elijah of the 21st Century” in Indian Christendom. Singh’s words, “I have never asked any man for anything, but the Lord is richly supplying all my needs,” reflect his faith-driven ministry. Despite Parkinson’s disease in his final decade, his legacy endures through Hebron’s global network and writings, praised by figures like Ravi Zacharias.

Sermon Summary
Bakht Singh shares a powerful testimony about responding to God's call to help those in need, illustrating how a simple act of giving five rupees to a widow fulfilled her prayer and need. He emphasizes the importance of believers being sensitive to the needs of others and the necessity of prayer to discern those needs. Singh warns against the ambition for power among church leaders who lack compassion and encourages a spirit of sharing and mutual support within the community. He highlights the example of the early church in Antioch, where believers willingly helped each other without begging, driven by prayer and love. Ultimately, he calls for a return to faith and a loving heart in service to God and others.

Early morning as I prayed, Lord said to me, There is one window somewhere in great need. That widower boy came for hire. You go to her and give her five rupees. So I woke up. So all my pockets were nothing there. The key is clear. Why? You go and give her five rupees. I put my coat onto my Bible. In the street I saw one brand five rupee note. So I said, Anyone loves five rupee note anywhere? Nobody said. I said three times. Nobody said. Nobody said. I took the note. I went to the same widow. I gave her five rupee note. She began to weep. She said, Brother, last night in the dream I saw my husband. He was saying to me, Don't worry. He will come and give you five rupees. He said, I don't have anything in the house. God has sent you. There is not a chance. Both go together. As we help others, We have to help by them. Not by God. We have to help each other by God's grace. When we really pray, Lord tell me, Anybody in need, Anybody in difficulty, Can I share with him my bread, Or my money, Or my clothes. When we really pray, Lord who in need or anybody in need, My food is not required. My clothes are not required. My money is not required. Is it possible to share with anyone? Then we should pray this way. Prayer continue to be pray with him. Lord will tell me of some need. These are not necessary food I can help. Finally, But there are many believers, they have plenty of money, but they have no heart to share. But there are many believers, they have plenty of money, but they have no heart to share. And that's why you find in their midst there will be jealousy and murmuring and complaining. And that's why you find in their midst there will be jealousy and murmuring and complaining. And at the same time God has heavenly plan also for the very same need. And at the same time God has heavenly plan also for the very same need. In those days when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there was a murmuring of the Christians against the Hebrews. So we find that so many men very ambitious to become elders or deacons or leaders. So we find that so many men very ambitious to become elders or deacons or leaders. But they only want power and authority. But they only want power and authority. They have no loving heart for the people. They only want to be seen on a Sunday in the front. They only want to be seen on a Sunday in the front. Or count the money or hold the box. But they have no spiritual concern for the poor people. So only these sinful men, whom God has prepared, can become push-uppers. And that is the biggest need today among many assemblies. We have many men who are ambitious for power, but very few who have a loving heart for God's flock. Now these men who are full of Holy Ghost, whom God has appointed, used to meet for prayer together and find out who was in need and how to meet the need. And that's how we were able to help each other and other assemblies too. In the 11th chapter, Prama 27, indeed there came prophets from Jerusalem and Antioch for 28. Then the disciples, everyone got belated, determined to send relief unto the brethren who dwelt in Judea. Even though there was famine at that time and persecution in Jerusalem among the believers, they did not beg for money help. They never said any big appeal to other people, please help us now. God Himself spoke to believers in Antioch. So your fellow believers in Jerusalem were suffering. So many believers came forward of own accord, whatever they could spare, they put together. And that was sent there to the hands of Barnabas and Saul, to pay a toll. Now they came of own accord. They knew by prayer their fellow believers were suffering, they must share. But when they came to Jerusalem, they did not find their fellow believers weeping and crying. They were not begging for money or food. They were praying. Even though they were suffering much, even persecution. So both Barnabas and Saul became just in time for their prayer meeting. As per chapter 12, verse 3, chapter 5, we have a capital prison. A capital prison was made without sitting on a chair and God for him. One minute. Verse 5. So they were surprised. Now they were suffering in poverty, now they were crying and weeping, they were afraid. To their prayer God issued the whole prison. And that's where both Paul and Barnabas learned how to pray. They gave them some money and food. In Jerusalem they learned how to pray. And they came back with a new burden of prayer to Antioch. Acts 13, verses 1 to 3. Now there was in the church, there was Antioch, some prophets and teachers, and Barnabas and Simeon, then we saw the neither, which is of Sarini, Menahem, Jehobim, Paul helped us out. Verse 2. When they were fasted and prayed, they held on them, they sent them away. Now you can see what a great blessing it has brought to Antioch, to Jerusalem. They shared with them whatever they could share. And now they are given a new burden of prayer. And they have a new vision for the whole ministry. And therefore Antioch became a means of blessing to many people throughout Asia. And by helping others, by sharing with others, we are given a spiritual also vision. Now please make the London lesson. You have to pray daily. Anybody in the neighborhood, either surrounding, in need, in poverty, or trouble, panic line, can tell me. And I shall help them. In the same way, those who are called to be elders or shepherds, they will learn also how to pray with a burden for all those in need anywhere. Those who are called to be elders or shepherds, they will learn also how to pray with a burden for all those in need anywhere. And those who are called to be elders or shepherds in the assembly, they should also pray to the Lord whether there is anyone in need around them or not. One more thing. Nehemiah chapter 5, verse 14. Moreover, from the time I was appointed to be their governor, land of Judah, from the 20th year even to the 30th year, until I conceived the king, 12 years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor. From the time I was appointed to be their governor, land of Judah, from the 20th year even to the 30th year, until I conceived the king, 12 years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor. Other governors, they were depending upon other people to support them. Other governors, they were depending upon other people to support them. Other governors were serving for money sake, name sake, power sake. But Nehemiah was serving as a regard. But Nehemiah was serving as a regard. From the time I was appointed to be their governor, land of Judah, from the 20th year even to the 30th year, until I conceived the king, 12 years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor. Other governors, they were depending upon other people to support them. Other governors were serving for money sake, name sake, power sake, from the time I was appointed to be their governor, land of Judah, from the 20th year even to the 30th year, until I conceived the king, 12 years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor. They will be more comfortable. A nice house, enough food for the whole family and the future also. A nice house, enough food for the whole family and the future also. If they don't get enough money, every Sunday they start beating them. Every Sunday they start beating them. Even people don't know how to give. Even people don't know how to give. They are beggar servants. They are beggar servants. And that's why, remember, they will be in a better spiritual state. And that's why, remember, they will be in a better spiritual state. If we serve God faithfully and depend upon Him for everything, then there will be no more questions. Then there will be no more questions. We will see our Muslim brothers and sisters We will see our Muslim brothers and sisters Please take watering. Serve God faithfully as unto Him. Not for money's sake or food's sake or comfort's sake. Not for future's sake. In due course, we will supply everything. God will provide everything in time for His will. He will keep us in water to give us more faith. I am sick of the joy to have gone to him. So when we have no faith in ourselves, those whom we serve also will have no faith. In other places, God works as support because they became beggar preachers, beggar servants. He has no faith. It is better for you to get a job somewhere. It is far better for you. It will be good for you. It will be good for you that every Sunday you beat people up. Go and get some jobs somewhere. You are not worthy of being God's servant. Don't bring your reproach on God's name. He is a living God, loving God. So we pray. God is speaking to you. Will you go and repent in silence? Ask him to give you simple faith and strong faith. You have got a loving heart and a kind heart. Ask him to give you a loving and a kind heart. You have been begging and murmuring. Ask God for forgiveness. You have failed in your duty as a shepherd of God's flock. Ask God for forgiveness. You have failed in your duty as a shepherd of God's flock. Ask God for forgiveness. God is speaking to you and you want to pray for you. It doesn't matter how you keep your ears. May God forgive you and bless you. Anybody else? Call upon him and don't go empty for presence. You keep your head. Our loving Heavenly Father, in the name of Lord Jesus Christ, our loving and saviour, thank you for thy word to us. Thank you for the honour given to us, rebuild the broken wall and the burnt gales Jerusalem. Heavenly Father, forgive us our hard heartedness. Forgive us also for going to beg for help not to Thee. Heal us to put our trust in Thee alone. Heal us to put our trust in Thee alone. Lord, we have put our trust in you as your servants. Lord, we have lost our trust in you. Lord, for lack of faith and murmuring unbelief, we have found our labour very barren. Lord, forgive us. We humble ourselves with labour abundant grace. We want to serve Thee as unto Thee and fully trusting Thee with all our needs. Lord, we call upon Thee all among us to show Him our prayer. Thy mercy be shown to all of us. May we have the occasion to praise Thee. May Thy power available to help us to recover every loss. Lord, give us our first love. May we be satisfied till we get our first love. Give us a new burden for prayer. Give us fear of sacrifice. Give us a new burden for the destroyed souls. Give us a new love for each and every one of us. Enter by word. Let the beginning be deepened and perfected. May we keep on having it for the whole day. Thy mercy be shown to us. Thy grace be shown to us. Whatever has commanded be obeyed, as we pray in the name of the Lord, yes, Christ, our loving Saviour. Amen. Now unto Him able to keep us from falling, and present us far less than the glory which we enjoy, to the only warrior, the most saviour, the Lord is the glory in power, both now and evermore.
