Bakht Singh

Bakht Singh Chabra (1903 - 2000). Indian evangelist, church planter, and Bible teacher born in Joiya, Punjab (now Pakistan), to a devout Sikh family. Educated at Punjab University, he studied agricultural engineering in England (1926-1928) and Canada (1929-1932), embracing a Western lifestyle, including smoking and drinking, while rejecting his Sikh roots by shaving his hair. Initially hostile to Christianity—once tearing a Bible apart—he converted in 1929 in Winnipeg after reading the New Testament, influenced by Christian friends John and Edith Hayward. Returning to India in 1933, he began preaching as an Anglican evangelist, later becoming independent, sparking the 1937 Martinpur revival, a pivotal movement in Indian Christianity. In 1941, after a night of prayer in Chennai, he founded Hebron Ministries, establishing over 10,000 indigenous churches modeled on New Testament principles across India and South Asia. Singh authored books like How I Got Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory and held annual “Holy Convocations” in Madras, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kalimpong, drawing thousands. Married to Rama Bai at age 12 in 1915, little is recorded of their personal life. His contextualized gospel, blending Indian spirituality with biblical truth, earned him the title “Elijah of the 21st Century” in Indian Christendom. Singh’s words, “I have never asked any man for anything, but the Lord is richly supplying all my needs,” reflect his faith-driven ministry. Despite Parkinson’s disease in his final decade, his legacy endures through Hebron’s global network and writings, praised by figures like Ravi Zacharias.

Sermon Summary
In this sermon, Brother Vaksing discusses the challenges faced by the people of Jerusalem as they rebuilt the broken walls and burned gates. He emphasizes that as believers, when we obey God and serve Him, the enemy will try to hinder us in various ways. One of the challenges the people faced was a lack of resources, leading them to sell their land, houses, and gardens. However, Brother Vaksing encourages the congregation to trust in God's provision rather than resorting to begging. He shares a personal testimony of how God provided for his family's needs when they prayed in faith. The sermon emphasizes the importance of not relying on others for our needs, but instead seeking God's provision and helping others in need.

This contains the message on Bear ye one another's burdens from Ephesians chapter 5 from one to end delivered by the Lord's servant Brother Buxing during the All India Holy Convocation family prayer messages in the year 1972 at Hebron, Hyderabad. There was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren, the Jews. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. Niyamaya Vasavada. And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren, the Jews. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren, the Jews. Now when they started rebuilding the broken walls of Jerusalem and the bond gates they had to face much opposition from the enemies. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. But now we find here they had to face problems from within themselves. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. Now you find as you begin to obey God and want to serve Him the enemy uses all kind of devices and their weapons to hinder us from obeying God fully and doing his work carefully. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. Now here we find how because of their lack of love for each other the trouble began among themselves. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. And there were some people who had to mortgage their land other Jews because they had no money for their own living. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. Some also there were said we have mortgaged our land, vineyards, houses that we might buy corn because of the drought. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. They also there said we have borrowed money for the king's tribute and that upon our land and vineyards. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. Because of lack of love, lack of proper sympathy these people were suffering. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. So when they came to that country also there was famine at that time. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. Because of poverty, because of famine they had to sell their land or houses or vineyards, gardens or mortgage them to live, have some more food. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. The other Jews began to also take interest usually from them. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. And that's how God's work was hindered. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. And if we fail to do our duty to help our fellow believers who are in need and poverty, we are in God's work. Chapter 5, Niyamaya Vasavada. In the word of God, we are given lessons. Chapter 6, Niyamaya Vasavada. Verse 2, Niyamaya Vasavada. And so fulfilled the law of Christ. Chapter 6, Niyamaya Vasavada. I must dine. Chapter 7, Niyamaya Vasavada. It will not be weary in well-doing, but due season we shall reap every faint dot. Chapter 7, Niyamaya Vasavada. If we pray and ask God to guide us day by day, He will show us who are in need and how they can be helped without any embarrassment. Chapter 8, Niyamaya Vasavada. We as fellow believers cannot go out and beg for food or beg for money. We as fellow believers cannot go out and beg for food or beg for money. Now please see also Psalm 34 and verse 10. Young men do lack of hunger, but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing. Young men do lack of hunger, but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing. Then Psalm 27, verse 25. I have been young, and now I am old, yet have I not seen righteous forsaken, nor a seed begging bread. I have been young, and now I am old, yet have I not seen righteous forsaken, nor a seed begging bread. Then Psalm 27, verse 25. I have been young, and now I am old, yet have I not seen righteous forsaken, nor a seed begging bread. Now as a believer we cannot go and beg for anybody. As a believer we cannot go and beg for anybody. But those believers who have the habit of begging, they remain beggars. But those believers who have the habit of begging, they remain beggars. At the same time we as believers have a responsibility to help others without their coming to us. At the same time we as believers have a responsibility to help others without their coming to us. Those who are in need, they must learn how to pray for their need, rather than go to man for begging. Those who are in need, they must learn how to pray for their need, rather than go to man for begging. Those who are in need, they must learn how to pray for their need, rather than go to man for begging. But others also have a duty to pray and find out who are in need and how to help them. But others also have a duty to pray and find out who are in need and how to help them. But others also have a duty to pray and find out who are in need and how to help them. Now some years ago I was staying with a poor family. Now some years ago I was staying with a poor family. And they were good believers. And they were good believers. But so happened the husband lost his job. But so happened the husband lost his job. And so happened the husband lost his job. One day they had no food in the house. One day they had no food in the house. Not even a piece of bread. Not even a piece of bread. But the other family, the other murmuring, they began to pray. But the other family, the other murmuring, they began to pray. Now they knew God can supply their needs, now they are going out for begging. I even heard their small children also praying with simple prayers, Lord may be their need. While we were still praying, we heard some sound at the back door. As if somebody has thrown a brick at the back door. As we opened the door, found on the one step a huge gunny bag, full of main things. If we believers start begging, we remain beggars and no faith. If we believers start begging, we remain beggars and no faith. God is never pleased when we go for begging. God is never pleased when we go for begging. Now, only on two occasions, I doubted. Now, only on two occasions, I doubted. At that time, I had no proper food for many days. At that time, I had no proper food for many days. I had to walk long distances every day. I had to walk long distances every day. One day, a thought came to me. One day, a thought came to me. I was feeling very hungry. I was feeling very hungry. But if I go to my friend for food, But if I go to my friend for food, If I go to my mother at the same time she eats, they sure to say, have something to eat. So I knew they have their lunch at quarter past one. So I said, I go at half past one. And I will say, no twice, and yes, third time. So I went at half past one. They have begun their food. They said to me, please come inside, have some food. I said, no thank you. I said for a while. They again said, no thank you. I said, no thank you. Again third time. Please have something. I said, thank you. I had a very good meal. But after a few weeks, again the same difficulty came. I was very hungry. The same thought came. I will go at half past one. Around the way, Dr. Meier, say your faith. I said, Lord, I never asked for food. I never even told them I am hungry. They said to me, three times, have something to eat. He said to me, what was your motive in going there? He said, Lord, what was your motive in going there? I felt ashamed. So I repented. Lord, forgive me. I will never doubt you again. From what means? I do not go to any person I know you are living God. And that is why Lord gave me a stronger faith. One day I had no food for the whole day. At about midnight, a man came at my door, knocking there. And he woke me up. He said, brother, forgive me for coming so late. He said, he was fast asleep. He was. And he had a dream. In that dream, somebody is saying to him, Go to your brother Bhagat Singh and bring him food. He said, I woke up. And I went to my kitchen side. And I saw there one plate full of rice lying there, left over for the evening meal. He said, please tell me, did you have any food today? So he came to me at night and said, Please tell me, did you have any food today? I could not tell lie. I am sorry. I know. I could not tell lie. I am sorry. I did not have food. So he took me to his home at midnight. Now these things do not happen by chance. Don't say your case is different. Don't say your case is different. That is God's word. If we trust him fully, he is faithful. On another occasion, we were about 25 in a party for a gospel campaign. We had to prepare our own food in that place. That Sunday morning came. Do you want to try your cooking? He said to me, Shall we stay behind and cook food for the party? Let's go for the Sunday meeting. But they said, how about our mid-day food? But they said, how about our mid-day food? I said, no, I will provide. I said, no, I will provide. We all went for the meeting. We all went for the meeting. After meeting, we all were standing with the bus stand for the bus. We all were standing with the bus stand for the bus. I saw one man coming toward us with a very big basket. I saw one man coming toward us with a very big basket. I saw a person walking with a big basket on his head. So I knew him and said, where have you been? He said, I've been to a wedding party and there was much food left over. And they said, anybody wants food, take home. And he said, I have no family, I have no children. I'm carrying food for my neighbor and friends. It must be for your party. So I took it from his hand and put it on my friend's head. And there was food for 25 people. Very lovely food, all prepared. We must also do our duty. One early morning as I prayed, Lord said to me, there is one widow somewhere in great need. You go to her and give her five rupees. So I woke up. So all my pockets were nothing there. Very clearly, why? You go and give her five rupees. So I put my coat on, took my Bible. In the street I saw one brand five rupee note. So I said, anyone, large five rupee note, anywhere? Nobody said. I said three times. Nobody answered. So I picked the note. And went to the same widow. And gave her five rupee note. And she began to weep. She said, brother, last night in the day I saw my husband. She said, brother, last night in the day I saw my husband. And he was saying to me, don't worry, God will give you five rupees. He said, I have nothing to do in the house. God has sent you. God has sent you. You got a chance. Both go together. As we help others, we also help by them, by God. So just as we help others, God also helps us. So do you really pray, Lord, tell me, anybody in need, anybody difficulty, can I share with him my bread, or my money, or my clothes? So our poor fellow believers, whether widows or orphans, others, can be strengthened, can be helped by mutual cooperation. But there are many believers, they have plenty of money, but they have no heart to share. But there are many believers, they have plenty of money, but they have no heart to share. And that's why you find in their midst, there will be jealousy and murmuring and complaints. And at the same time, God has a heavenly plan also, for the very same need. In those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there was a murmuring of the Christians against the Hebrews, because their widows were erected in the Delhi administration. So the early church solved their problem. They were no doubt, everybody was fine, there will be poverty, also there will be difficulties. They were no doubt, everybody was fine, there will be poverty, also there will be difficulties. But they appointed seven men full of Holy Ghost for their business. But they appointed seven men full of Holy Ghost for their business. But they only want power. They have no loving heart for the people. They only want to be seen on a Sunday in the front. They only want to be seen on a Sunday in the front. Or count the money or hold the box. Or count the money or hold the box. But they have no spiritual concern for the poor people. But they have no spiritual concern for the poor people. Only the people who are full of the Holy Spirit can become the real leaders. Only the people who are full of the Holy Spirit can become the real leaders. And that is the biggest need today among many assemblies. And that is the biggest need today among many assemblies. We have many men who are ambitious for power, but very few who have a loving heart for God's flock. We have many men who are ambitious for power, but very few who have a loving heart for God's flock. Now these men who are full of Holy Ghost, God has appointed you to meet for prayer together. And find out who are in need and how to meet the need. And find out who are in need and how to meet the need. In the 11th chapter, In the 11th chapter, Chapter 27, Chapter 27, Indeed there came prophets from Jerusalem and Antioch for 28 years. So even though there was a famine at that time and persecution in Jerusalem among the believers. So even though there was a famine at that time and persecution in Jerusalem among the believers. They did not beg for money help. They did not beg for money help. They never said any big appeal to the other people, please help us now. God himself spoke to believers in Antioch. Your fellow believers in Jerusalem are suffering. So many believers came forward of their own accord, whatever they could spare, they put together. And that was sent there to the hands of Barnabas and Saul, who gave Paul. Now they came on their own accord. They knew by prayer, their fellow believers are suffering, they must share. But when they came to Jerusalem, they did not find their fellow believers weeping and They were not begging for money or food. They were praying. Even though they were suffering much, even persecution. So both Barnabas and Saul became just in time for their prayer meeting. Actual chapter, verse 3, chapter 5. We there were kept in prison, but a prayer was made without ceasing of a third unto God for him. 25th verse. 25th verse 5. So they were surprised. Now they are suffering in poverty, now they are crying and weeping in their prayer. To their prayer, God issued the whole prison. And that is where both Paul and Barnabas learned how to pray. See, they gave them some money and food to Jerusalem. In return they learned how to pray. And they came back with a new burden of prayer to Antioch. Acts 13, verse 1 to 3. Now they were in the church, there was Antioch, some prophets and teachers and Barnabas and Simeon. There was also Niger, which was Sarini, Menahem, which had been called Helcotech, verse 2. When they were fasted and prayed, they had one of them, they sent him away. Now if you see, what a great blessing is brought to Antioch to Jerusalem. They shared with them whatever they could share. And now they are given a new burden of prayer, a new heavenly vision for the whole ministry. And therefore Antioch became a means of blessing to many people throughout Asia. And by helping others, by sharing with others, we are giving a spiritual blessing to the world. Now please learn the lesson. Learn to pray daily. Now anybody in the neighborhood, in need, in poverty or trouble, any kind, can you tell me and I shall help them. So pray to the Lord, in your neighborhood, in your town, wherever you are, is there anyone in need whom you can help? In the same way, those who are called to be elders or shepherds, you must learn also how to pray with a burden for all those in need anywhere. The one more thing, Nehemiah chapter 5, verse 14, Moreover, from the time I was appointed to be their governor, land of Judah, from the 20th year even to the 30th year, I have not eaten the bed of the governor. Another governor, they were depending upon other people to support them. But the former governor that had been before me was chargeable on people. Taking of them bread and wine, beside 40 shekels of silver, even their sermons were ruled over the people. Other governors were serving for money sake, name sake, power sake. But Nehemiah was serving other to God. But for 12 years, he says, he took nothing from them. We find many people in the state of Gaza region. But they are only governed by money. Where they get more money, they go very happily. They are concerned about God's call, God's word, God's plan, God's plan. Where they will be more comfortable. A nice house, enough food for the whole family and the future also. If they don't get enough money, every Sunday they start whipping them. That is their main message. You people don't know how to give, you don't know how to give, you don't know how to give. They are beggar servants. They are beggar servants. That is why you remember, they are in a bad spiritual state. Wherever they go. If we serve God faithfully, and depend upon Him for everything, then no murmur, no question. We will see our ministry very fruitful. Many say, they live on faith, but not real faith. Many say, they live on faith, but not real faith. It is not their faith, other people's faith. Please take warning. Serve God faithfully as unto Him. Not for money's sake, or food's sake, or clothes' sake. Not for money's sake, or food's sake, or clothes' sake. In due course, God will supply you every need. In due course, God will supply you every need. Either keep us in want, or give us more faith. At times, to give us more faith, He keeps us in a bad state. He does this to teach us how much joy we have to Him. When we have no faith ourselves, those whom we serve also, will have no faith. In other places, God works as a shepherd, because they became beggar preachers, beggar servants. In other places, God works as a shepherd, because they became beggar preachers, beggar servants. He has no faith. It is better for you to get a job somewhere. It is far better for you. Rather than murmuring every Sunday, and beating people every Sunday. Go and get some job somewhere. You are not worthy to be God's servant. Don't bring any reproach against Him. He is a living God, loving God. Let us pray. God is speaking to you. Will you kindly repent in silence? Ask Him to give you simple faith and strong faith. You haven't got a loving heart and a kind heart. Ask Him to give you a loving and a kind heart. I want to pray for you. If there is any matter, you can keep your hands raised. God is speaking to you. I want to pray for you. If there is any matter, you can keep your hands raised. God is speaking to you. If there is any matter, you can keep your hands raised. I want to pray for you. God forgives you and blesses you. Anybody else? Call upon Him and don't go empty of His presence. Keep your hands raised.
