Sermon Summary
John Bennett delivers a sermon on the origins and principles of The Faith Mission, an interdenominational evangelical home mission rooted in the UK & Ireland. Founded by John George Govan, the mission was called by God to bring the Gospel to the needy villages of Great Britain and Ireland, experiencing significant revivals and spiritual awakenings. The 'Lewis Awakening' in Scotland's outer Hebrides, led by Faith Mission evangelist Duncan Campbell, brought about a transformative revival. The mission's reliance on God's provision, inspired by Hudson Taylor's principles, has led to a 'No Debt' policy and a firm belief in God's promise to supply every need.
The History of the Faith Mission Movement
The Faith Mission is an interdenominational, evangelical and evangelistic home mission that has its roots in the UK & Ireland. The LORD raised up the work of The Faith Mission under the leadership of a young Glasgow businessman called John George Govan. Mr Govan had once contemplated working with the Salvation Army in India. He had also considered working with the China Inland Mission. However, God was not calling him to the villages of India or China; God was calling him to the needy villages of Great Britain and Ireland with the life changing message of the Gospel. It is safe to say that The Faith Mission was born in the fires of revival and spiritual awakening. The early years of the mission's history are marked by numerous and significant revivals, that literally shook the villages of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1950, Dr. Graham Scroggie observed, "Throughout two generations and over wide areas they [Faith Mission workers] have lit the fires of revival." Perhaps the most well known revival is what has been called the 'Lewis Awakening' (1949-52). The Island of Lewis in Scotland's outer Hebrides, was literally transformed by this and previous movements of the Spirit of God. The Rev'd Duncan Campbell, a Faith Mission evangelist, was God's chosen instrument during what was, for many souls, terrible days of Holy Spirit conviction that resulted in triumphant years of what could simply be called, 'Heaven on earth'. A Toronto minister invited The Faith Mission to start a similar work in the villages and rural communities of Canada. In the year 1927 two workers from the UK were dispatched and the Canadian work commenced. Why are we called The 'Faith' Mission? Mr Govan was deeply impacted and impressed by the ministry of the late Hudson Taylor and the China Inland Mission. It was Hudson Taylor who said, "God's work done in God's way never lacks God's supply." Based on this principle, Mr Govan commenced the work with a total dependence upon God to supply each and every need. No appeals for financial support, no fundraising efforts, and a strict 'No Debt' policy have been maintained since its inception. The worker appeals alone to God, who has promised to supply every need "according to His riches in glory." The Faith Mission (in Canada) has proved this promise to be true as God has been so faithful in supplying every need.
