Willie Mullan

William “Willie” Mullan (1911 - 1980). Northern Irish Baptist evangelist and pastor born in Newtownards, County Down, the youngest of 17 children. Orphaned after his father’s death in the Battle of the Somme, he faced poverty, leaving home at 16 to live as a tramp, struggling with alcoholism and crime. Converted in 1937 after hearing Revelation 6:17 in a field, he transformed his life, sharing the gospel with fellow tramps. By 1940, he began preaching, becoming the Baptist Union’s evangelist and pastoring Great Victoria Street and Bloomfield Baptist churches in Belfast. In 1953, he joined Lurgan Baptist Church, leading a Tuesday Bible class averaging 750 attendees for 27 years, the largest in the UK. Mullan authored Tramp After God (1978), detailing his redemption, and preached globally in Canada, Syria, Greece, and the Faeroe Islands, with thousands converted. Married with no children mentioned, he recorded 1,500 sermons, preserved for posterity. His fiery, compassionate preaching influenced evangelicalism, though later controversies arose.

There's a land that is fairer than day, and by faith we can see it afar. So the Father waits over the way to prepare us a dwelling place there. There's a land that is fairer than day, and by faith we can see it afar. So the Father waits over the way to prepare us a dwelling place there. In that place on the third day of the morn, there was a sun shining bright, and a spirit that was pure, and a child that was blind. In that place on the third day of the morn, there was a sun shining bright, and a spirit that was pure, and a child that was blind. For the past two weeks now, we've been going through what I've encycled, following the footsteps of Christ. And tonight we're going to follow the footsteps of the young child Jesus, only two years of age now, and we're going to follow him down into Egypt this evening. And we're going to see him in Egypt, and we're going to follow him back out of Egypt this evening. But let's recap just this evening quickly what we have already done. You know, on the first week we followed Louis and Joseph down to Najus, Nazareth, right back to you there. And you remember I told you that they couldn't come through to Nazareth because of the Jews that were being visited by the Monarchs. So they crossed the Jordan up there, and they came down what we now call the southern side of the Jordan. And down here at Bethabara, they crossed the Jordan again, and came to Bethlehem. And we had a whole evening looking at the bones at Bethlehem. Just look into the manger for this newborn babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger. And we asked the question, who is this? You remember the angel answered the question. To the horrid end, we said to the shepherds, unto you this day in the city of David is born a soldier. This was the soldier. Is born a soldier which is Christ. So this would be Christ. Is born a soldier which is Christ the Lord. For this was Jehovah. This was Emmanuel, which simply means God with us. And we had a whole evening looking at the grave of Bethlehem. And then when the child was eight days old, we looked at the circumcision of the child, and we took a whole evening on looking at what this meant physically, and then nationally, and then what it means spiritually. And we had a great evening. And then when the child would be about six weeks old, we followed Lily and Joseph to Jerusalem, where he was presented in the temple according to the law. And you remember that all his family came in and brought a sermon he preached. And you remember that Anna appeared suddenly, the prophetess, and what adoration she poured forth. And last, which we were looking at the child when he was two years old, or almost two years old, when the wise men came looking for him. And this was quite a surprise to some in the class, and they came round and expressed this afterwards. You see, we get Christmas cards at times, and there are three wise men on the Christmas card, and I wouldn't know where you would get the three wise men from at all, certainly not from the Scriptures. And you usually see these three wise men in the manger, worshipping the bulb of Bethlehem, and there's nothing in the Scriptures about that at all, not in the very least. And for some who may be here tonight, and were not here last week, we need to recap a bit, because it will set in to what we're doing this evening. And we're at Matthew's Gospel chapter two. And it says here, Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, and the day was headed for King, behold there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, and marked it, they are coming to Jerusalem today. Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen this power in the east, in that these wise men came from the east. And when you talk about the east, in this book, east of Jerusalem it is, isn't it? We're thinking, a way across the Spyridon desert, a way across all the counties. And if on the night that Jesus was born, his star appeared in the east, and these men began following it, it was the day or two before they came to Jerusalem, I assure you. Because they had to go right up the belt of the Euphrates, right away on up till it comes north. And that's the point where they start to come through the Spyridon desert toward Damascus. And then they have got quite a long way to come from there to Jerusalem. And it threatened, if they were doing it by camel it would be two years. But this book declares that it was so. You see they came to Jerusalem saying where is he that is born king of the Jews? And we went into that last week. We are come to worship him. Firstly, when Herod became. Because he was the king of that province, Judah. Ah yes, Caesar Augustus had placed Herod there over the province and he was called Herod the Great. He was the king. When Herod the king had heard these things he was troubled. Because when there is a king born in your province you must feel something. When Herod the king heard these things he was troubled. When he had gathered the chief priests and scribes of the people he demanded of them their Christ. The Jewish Messiah should be born. And they said unto him, in death may heaven reveal for what it is written by the prophet and now death will come. And they could quote the scriptures. Verse 7. Then, then Herod, when he had frivolously called the wise men he took them into the palace got them privately alone and cried out then diligently is the word that the Holy Ghost used the time the star appeared. Because I need to know the time now. And he got the time out of them. He got the time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem and said go and fetch diligently for the young child and when you have found him bring me word again that I may come and worship him. He had no notion. When they had heard the king they departed. And the fairness started again. Verse 11. And when they were come into the house if you please. That is not the danger sir. I don't know why you got the danger out of this at all. You see, pets will not take time to leave. That is not the danger. That is the house. They are living in a house now. They are not in the danger. And when they were come into the house they saw the young child and that is not a danger. I would have thought you would have caught that on before now. Why the child is almost two years of age. He is toddling about as we say. This is no danger. And this is no danger. This is the young child. And for the Roman Catholics in the class the young child is close before the mother here. When they saw the young child with his mother. It says when they were come into the house they saw the young child with his mother, nearly his mother. And said I am in worship to her. Oh not on your life sir. Just worship him and didn't bother worshiping her. Why would they? Oh she was a good woman and a pure woman but you can't worship a woman no matter how pure she is. You can only worship God you know. He was God and they were wise. They knew that. And so you see they are in the house and they are worshiping. And I think the Jukes must have thought there was only three men because they opened the treasure and presented gifts, gold, frankincense and myrrh But there is no word in this passage that says three men. I wouldn't think that three men would start out for more of the Calvary with three camels. I'm perfectly sure there was a troop of them. And I'm sure that's what aroused Jerusalem. It says in verse 12 And being warned of God this is where God enters into this story that they should not regret the herald they departed into their own country another way and went back another way throughout of the Calvary. And when they were departed that's where we're going to start this evening but let's get this bit. Verse 16 Then the herald when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men of exceeding loft wasn't he? And sent forth and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem and in all the coasts thereof from two years old and under Why that now? Because he had inquired diligently It says actually in this very verse from two years old and under according to the time that he had diligently inquired of the wise men I thought you would get that. You see these men saw the star on the mount that Jesus was born and thus they followed and it took them two years to come and when they had come Mary and Joseph were still in Bethlehem It was easy to get out then and probably business was even better there As an upper Nazareth they were still here and he was fined in the morning that they had a house there You know when he inquired diligently he knew that this young king is here somewhere and I need to get him and I'll have to slay all the kids from two years and under which would tell you all that I'm trying to tell you quite easily and so you can see this this evening Now this is the young child he's somewhere about two years of age and this wicked king did a dreadful thing but we need to start off the chapter now verse thirteen and when they were departed that is when the wise men were departed the word the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream saying arise and put the young child and his mother it's always put like that in this wonderful book if you were speaking about mother and child you'd put the mother first this book doesn't worry about that sort of sentiment this book talks about the young child and his mother all the time arise and keep the young child and his mother and flee into Egypt and when God says arise he means it and then he says flee he doesn't mean fall and it's most important to obey God you know because God just doesn't talk for fun and he's not there until I bring thee good for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him Herod wasn't worried about the virgin Mary I assure you he was just worried about the young child and so you see we're going to think tonight about the security of the sovereign because after all that God has shown you he was born king of the Jews and it's just because that he proclaimed king that King Herod is still alive and we're going to look at the security of the sovereign and then at the latter part of the chapter we're going to look at the humility of the son because it's true that he's born sovereign and son and it's true that it was because he was a sovereign he had to be taken into Egypt to be made secure but when he's coming out this book talks about out of Egypt have I called my son you must always read it the way it's there you know so this is before us this evening the security of the sovereign and the humility of the son and in looking at the security of the sovereign we're going to look at three things we're going to look at the full knowledge of God this always blesses me and encourages me and helps me because God knows everything and let me say to all and somebody here there never was a time when we didn't know because I can take you right back along the pages of scripture to the very second when time begun but I can take you all out of scripture to a spot that's called this quorum the foundation of the world before the hills in orbit stood where earth received its rain before there were any planets before there was a solar system I can beat you in back yonder I'm back yonder God knew everything he made it now he wouldn't be God if he didn't would he and some of you will get problems with election it's because you begin with election but the story never begins there because it says whom he foreknew he did predestinate predestination didn't come first you know and Jesus says we're elect according to the full knowledge of God the Father and get your full knowledge into it and you haven't much bother with it he knew everything and we're going to think about the full knowledge of God in this case of the security of the sovereign this evening and then we're going a bit further because we're not only thinking of the full knowledge of God we're thinking of the intervention of God because God intervened in when Joseph didn't know when Joseph did not know either the danger or the difficulty or the disaster that lay ahead God intervened as those men and we're not only going to look at the full knowledge of God and the intervention of God but we're going to look at the guidance of God because God intervened to guide Joseph all for the security of his child and mind you if you are his child there's a lot in this for you to ask yourself I think you can see the full knowledge of God quite easily here it says verse 13 and when they were departed behold the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream saying arise and take the young child and his mother and flee into Egypt and be thy there until I bring thee word for for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him now God knew all about that in fact he foretold it didn't he Herod hadn't moved yet on his diabolical work but I think we must get closer to this for now you know when you think about the birth of the Lord Jesus and when you think about the manger and think about the young child in the house and think of those very early days of the babyhood and childhood of the Lord Jesus you know there was a lot of people came to see and because we always listen to the angel saying unto you this day in the city of David is born a Savior which is Christ the Lord and the shepherds listening with their very hearts stirred and saying let us go now to Bethlehem and the shepherds came to see him in the manger for they were there already there's no doubt at all about it and there's no doubt at all that when he was taken to the temple at six weeks old to be presented to the Lord after he was circumcised there's no doubt that all the children held him in their arms and cried I have seen thy salvation he also knew that salvation was in the person and there is none other name unto heaven given among men whereby he must be saved neither is there salvation in any other and Adam knew a lot and then after two years the wise men came along and they fell down and worshipped him and he went into that last week but you know there was another one after of Bethlehem at the manger that we don't see not here anyway but I'll tell you where you will see it come with me over to the book of the Revelation and we're at chapter twelve the book of the Revelation I wonder do you remember this when we were at the book of the Revelation Revelation chapter twelve verse one and there appeared a great wonder in heaven a woman clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet and upon her head a crown of twelve stars you remember us asking the question who's the woman you know there's a lot of women very important women in this book Eve was a very important woman and the blessed virgin Mary was a very important woman and of course the bride which is the twelfth of Jesus Christ a very important woman too if you like to take the metaphor on through of course Israel who is the wife of Jehovah a very important woman and the scarlet woman in the book of Revelation is a very important woman there's a lot of women you can take a lot of notes preaching on I believe the woman here is Israel and I think that God is painting a picture of how she will look when we finish with her now I can tell you that she'll be clothed and not buried with the sun and the very moon will be under her feet and upon her head a crown of twelve stars for there'll be no loss five grand for all that is and if you have any doubts about my interpretation you'll read on and she being with child cried for burning and breath and pain to be delivered and there appears another wonder in heaven and behold a great red dragon you wouldn't have any problems about that would you because if you have, have a look at verse 9 and the great dragon would cast out that old serpent called the devil and Satan all the names are there so you can't be mistaken serpent, devil, Satan Holy Ghost trying his best to keep you right and now the devil's here it says there appears another wonder in heaven verse 3 and behold a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns upon his head and he stealed through the third part of the stars of heaven and he cast them to the earth and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered for to devour her child as soon as it was born any doubts about the child look at verse 5 and she brought forth a man child who was to rule all nations now that's the Lord Jesus you see sometimes we say that he came from Mary and that was true in a certain sense when the fullness of the time was coming was made of a woman it's a very wonderful thing but when we began Matthew's gospel last week it talks about Jesus Christ the son of David the son of Abraham because he came from Israel God into the flesh came from Israel and we should forever praise God for them and the day that he was born the devil was there oh I know that you saw the shepherds and I know that you saw Sinai and Anna and I know that you know something now about the wise men coming and let's get this thing mixed up that all the devil was in on the job you see the word gets there verse 4 the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered forth to devour her child as soon as it was born he never sleeps in on the job that's one thing about him do you see what God said now when we are back at Matthew 2 it says here verse 13 telling Jesus to go and be God there until our dream is good for heaven will seek the young child to destroy him you see I believe the oldest child was coming and he was using hands somebody said to me how could a man murder all of his children if he was devil to life he could there is never a problem then sometimes by some of the things that I see and hear in this province you would think there was demon possession going on already I want you to get this to destroy us all you know it would be interesting for us only that old clock that our sisters talked about I'm praying for that clock each day you know going to fall one of these days if we were to take the times in Christ's life on earth then the devil came I'll tell you one or two of them you can finish it after that he came as the devourer as the destroyer that's one of his names when the young child as soon as he was born the destroyer was in on the job look when we go to Matthew chapter 4 and that won't be very much see chapter 4 Jesus is led out of the spirit into the wilderness it says there see and when the temple came you see he came first out of the storm going to take the young child's life not only God's enslavement now he comes out of the temple going to try it another way going to tempt the Savior and then you find out as you go on through Matthew's gospel let's come to chapter 16 and I'll show you this chapter 16 I think it's 16 Matthew's gospel 16 verse 21 from that time forth Jesus began began Jesus to show unto his disciples how that he must go on to Jerusalem and so for many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed and the rain began the third day mind you we knew all about what lay ahead no mistakes about that then Jesus came and began to rebuke him saying be apart from me Lord this shall not be unto thee but he turned and said unto Peter get thee behind me because that was the devil again you see he came out of the destroyer just as soon as he was born then he came out of the temple as soon as his ministry began and as soon as he started to talk about going to Calvary he came through Peter out of an adventure he's going to take the Lord's advice now far be it from me Lord this shall not be unto thee you will not go to the cross get thee behind me and then he came at last to Judas Iscariot didn't he for Satan entered into Judas Iscariot to betray him let me get this bit over just now you see he left out every sign of God that is he'll destroy you if he can he bears the doubt of the roaring lion seeking whom he may devour in the woods and he'll devour your testimony if he can he'll put you on a remnant too it's called detention you'll be tempted but then sometimes he comes through your death and oh holy man yes my when I came to this place over twenty years ago I was in Broomfield where we were having revival meetings church packed, bathroom packed old church packed, relaying it in and all the rest of it and God was blessing and three men come from this church and asked me to come and one of my greatest friends who was a holy man of God he was Duke Quinn and he was called Holy Jew and so holy was he that the men in the shipyard would be crossed in front of him one day there was a queue waiting to put in their beds and a big rough man who would never reason that he would do anything for anybody everybody was observing him he came up the line and he was crossing and striking and everyone turned to look at him and the big man took his cap off said Jew if I had known you were in the line I wouldn't have said it and I'm sorry that's the sort of character Duke Quinn was he was no mean child of God but he came round and got down on his knees with tears in his eyes and he said to me don't you go to London but he was wrong and he was terribly wrong and many a day he came to this meeting afterwards and he said well hey didn't I make the biggest blunder of my life you just be careful who advises you cause you might have to say to your best pal get thee behind me Satan cause the devil will come and you know those people who can flatter all over you then betray you cause the devil will use them oh yes you know the devil was here on this job wasn't he I think we've got to see that and I think if you go through the Lord's life you will find that the old devil came and used Herod here and then used Peter and then used Judas's courage you and I have just got to make sure that the devil doesn't use us against some child of God just be careful now and you see God knew this God so knew he knew the devil was working as soon as the child was born it was he who revealed this in Revelation 12 and he knew just exactly who he would hook up to what to accept him after two years back there now and when he had given Judas his orders he said for Herod we'll seek the young child to destroy him don't you see that God so knows all the time I think it's a great thing that God knows when we don't see it Joseph and Mary sitting in the house scrawled to their ends about the Christ being born and they simply don't know and they simply cannot know there are situations where even the best men of God don't know what to do and there are situations where the best men of God don't know the difficulties and the dangers and the diabolical things that lie ahead but there's one thing sure God knows God knows God knows when the government will go down God knows when some man in the government will be taken by the devil to destroy the church oh he does you know it's a great thing he knows just pleased with me to know that but he doesn't only know the ends of England doesn't he that's the bit which goes you know verse 13 when they were departed behold the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream it must have been night time arise that's the first word and take the young child and his mother and flee and be thou there until I bring thee good stay and when God says arise and when God says flee and when God says stay oh that we would obey the Lord sometimes God talks to us about things and God says get out and from such turn away and touch not the unclean and all the rest of it and you never bother your head about it I'll tell you you'll fall into the devil's trap if you don't watch because God only talks because he knows what's ahead you're always safe obeying God you're never safe when you disobey you see God intervened in that Joseph he was just a carpenter but would he know about what was coming on the child of what was going to take place down here in Bethlehem he didn't know it was impossible it was a situation where he just simply couldn't know but you know God intervened right through scriptural like this when God had to destroy the antediluvian God told Noah so I say the things of God are things not to reject things he had never even heard about God intervened and told you know when Lot and he was the child of God he had a righteous soul the book says he baxed his righteous soul from bed to day and the lady with the black slider stuck inside him a place he should never have been in God intervened to bring him out before he would burn it you know I think that one of the greatest things in the scripture let me go back to Genesis 31 do you see this Genesis 31 book of Genesis chapter 31 you know old Joseph and mind you he was a crooked character you remember that he he bidded his brother right at the beginning about the birthright and then he he bluffed his old blind father and then he whipwinked his employer stole the sheep and then he ran away you know it says verse 20 we are at Genesis 31 verse 20 and he should stow away on a whale to live and material in that we told him not that he fled so he fled with all that he had took the sheep rose up passed over a river set his feet toward the Mount Gilead and it was toward Lebanon on the third day that Jacob had fled and he took his brother with him and pursued after him seven days journey and they overtook him in the Mount Gilead and God watch that bit God came to Lebanon the Syrian in a dream by night and said unto him take this that thou speak not to Jacob neither good nor bad God and of thee I think old Lebanon would have taken his life here but he was a child of God he may have been Jacob and maybe you are Jacob too but whether you are locked down in Sodom or whether you exist upon the plain if you are a child of God my dear God cares for you do you remember Elisha away on Mount Japheth and the enemy came to him all around the Mount and the little servant went out with a bucket to get water and saw the horsemen and the chariots and said drop the bucket round them and he said master what do we do and Elisha said open his eyes Lord open his eyes poor creature and when the Lord had opened the servant's eyes the horsemen and chariots of God were nearer and Elisha said may that be for us son or more than may that be for them God had intervened God gets between you and the enemy son I wonder do we believe this you know I can carry this on all night sir I can go into the New Testament I see Herod arresting Peter and in the night then Whitby would have brought them forth to Bethlehem Peter's bound with two chains between two soldiers and all the rest of them keep the guilt sir ah but God intervened I see Saul, Paul and Silas with their hands chained to the wall and their feet chopped and their straps are harnessed but God intervened He nearly knocked the prison down yes well might we say hallelujah brother that's our God He is child of God are you worried about Bartholomew or Paisley or anybody else are you worried because I think you're looking the wrong horse never mind about what the king will do whether it's King Heath you're thinking about or Captain Heath never bother about it you know God knows doesn't He He knows what Bartholomew you might guess what He'll say but He's not guessing He knows and if you're this child He'll look after you God is still on the throne and He will remember to them though trials may test us and burdens distress us He never will leave us alone God is still on the throne His promise is true He will not forget you you know He'll intervene oh you're going to see that in a wonderful way before the meeting's over you know let's get back to Matthew 2 you're not in the hurry sir you've got your piece with you all right we're back at Matthew's gospel chapter 2 now let's get the hold of this very carefully Matthew 2 you see He guided Jason very carefully this is guidance arise and I like this bit verse 14 when He arose He took the young child and His mother by night I like that bit, by night He didn't rest in a whole lot of time you know if God speaks to you tonight it's tonight you would need to obey Him some people come and tell me you know the Lord spoke to me about believers baptism ten years ago you know you were a long time to get into your if God talks to you it's tonight He arose that night it was a good job He did because there were no nights to be mixed with you He just obeyed God promptly and I think He fled that's what God said I'm sure if we could see them going first taste they're going down to Egypt you know you can see how they're depressed now from death to reign all down in Egypt I think they fled along that desert route I'll tell you this the willingness of Joseph is something that we should admire we don't hear much about Joseph but he was prepared for it, he always did what he was told even when the Virgin was graceless child and people were talking about her and he was thinking in his own mind to put her away quickly God says don't even do that you know she's all right so Joseph just took her to be his wife he's a good character wonderful character we can't waste time with that this evening so you'll find that they go on down into Egypt it says when he arose he took the young child and his mother by night and departed into Egypt and was there until the death of Herod Egypt's to bade the earnest that it might be so do which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet saying out of Egypt have I called my son and the prophet said that that's so good let's have a look at that because there's something here I think the young preachers would need to get a hold of Ezekiel, Daniel of Hosea and Hosea is chapter 11 Hosea chapter 11 God has taught me here himself he's taken the message of the prophet altogether and let him stand there verse 1 Hosea chapter 11 verse 1 and here's what God is saying when Israel was a child that's the nation he's talking about then I went in and called my son out of Egypt ah that's the reference we're getting back there that it might be so do which was spoken by the prophet now can you young preachers hear this you see in Hosea chapter 11 he's not talking about the son of God at all he's talking about the nation of Israel he says when Israel was a child then I loved him and called my son you see the nation was God's child too mind you he took the nation down to Egypt to hide it there during the famine so that's very fulfilling too you see I've always taught you and I hope you'll always remember this that every phrase from the beginning of a sentence to the comma every phrase be it long or short has only one true interpretation this one what is the true interpretation of Hosea 11 and 1 it's Israel and God is calling Israel he called Israel out of Egypt you know but I've taught you that while there is one true interpretation there can be abandoned applications so he can take that there now and apply it to his own son ah but that's application that's fulfilling it by application that's very fulfilling isn't it because he called Israel out of Egypt and he called his son out of Egypt where he's going to bring him out of Egypt in a moment or two you know the day that I was saved and became a child of God I was called out of Egypt too that's why I'm not in it because I was called out of it I'm in the world but I'm not out of it don't you tell me you're a child of God and you're still stuck in it because I'll be there to help you and I know you could be like Demas and Babaxios and love this present evil world alright I can tell you that he called Israel out of Egypt that he called Jesus out of Egypt that he called me out of Egypt but I'll tell you that one of these nights one of these job nights the Lord is coming to there and he's going to shout and he's going to call the church out of Egypt out of Egypt I was going to say stop it up there Jerzy but that wouldn't be nice terrible friend we're getting out of all these nights I'll tell you we'll be called out we'll leave this world of sin and sorrow for a better summer life we're getting out you know he's going to call us you see we work on the application do you preachers quit now because there's a lot of applications now yes I want you to get the hold of that now let's get back again to Matthew chapter 2 I want you to watch this bit very carefully verse 19 we're at now because we've done our bit about Herod verse 19 but when Herod would die I wish every fellow died and he died a very short time after he killed the new children I'll show you about that it was a very short time he wasn't as big a man as he thought he was the devil was only taking the harm out of him verse 19 but when Herod was dead behold an angel of the Lord appeared in the dream to do such an evil thing arise and take the young child and his mother and it's the same again mind you take the young child and his mother and go into the land of Israel for they are dead which took the young child's wife and he arose he always did what he was told and took the young child and his mother and came into the land of Israel but when he heard that Archie lay up the green injured ear in the room of his father Herod he was afraid to go further but that's just a proof to me that you know he had a house down in Bethlehem you see he was coming back out of Egypt now and I made a little bit of difference here so that you could see me, I'm coming up not under heavy surgery injured ear he was going back to Bethlehem some of the boys were asking me about matters but I think you can see this you know he was heading for that spot and then he heard you know God saw that he heard that Archie lay up the green injured ear injured ear that took nothing to do with Galilee and he was afraid to go further he was going to go but now he was afraid notwithstanding being warned of God and the green he turned aside into the parts of Galilee so he couldn't go further instead of coming on up here and going on back to Bethlehem he came right on up through the round here and went to London now there's an argument about that but I've taken that right it doesn't matter some believe that he came on up past this and went here or that he came this way and went up the garden east and climbed up there but that doesn't matter I'm not debating what way he went or this way that he went to Galilee now that's very interesting too because it says in the last verse this evening and he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth now I want to tell you the truth about Nazareth sir, you now Nazareth is not mentioned once in the Old Testament it was mentioned you won't find it there and I was picturing it last time the other week, just two weeks back and I was giving them a whole outline of Nazareth which I don't intend to do this evening and I was talking about this stinking little town because if there is a bat of the wrong place in this world from right now even now it is Nazareth it's one of the filthiest and the smelliest streets 26 and while I was talking and outlining and talking like this there was a man down here at my head and I could see him wide eyed and looking up at me I thought I was bending him and when I had finished he came up and stepped to me and he said you know I've never heard anything like that in my whole life you know I lived in Nazareth for 14 years and he said you know it's for your sake and God's sake he said I was on the police and found the sign in fact I was the most understood in Nazareth and he said when you say stinking you can put a chuck of a lass like that and this fellow was astounded when I pointed out that if the man he was this too when he went down into Egypt and he must have been he wasn't long there you know and so much when he came back to Nazareth just for a little day or two he was there until he was 30 then he felt like this we don't count the months just too much he was 28 years in Nazareth grew up in this stinking place no one knew he was the Lord of blood he could have built a palace in one time you know but he lived in a coffin in Sado you know and he lived it all for a purpose you know if he knew Jews of any standard at all would live there he could join a priest the Jews living in Jerusalem were poor it's believed that more Jews came to live in Nazareth than real orthodox Jews you see when Philip went to the family and said do we we'll find him and we'll try Jesus of Nazareth their eyes just went up to me like that can't any good thing come out of Nazareth it'd be rubbish because this shows the dire poverty knowing you so much humility of the Son of God that we're here after you know friends we grumble sometimes if there was a bit of a draft coming through the door there's a slip off the house or something like that or a spot of dump in the corner let me tell you that your Lord put up with a lot that you got yourself up for 28 years and you're supposed to be following him and if we got this part of the talcum there would be less grumbling out of us the one who grumbles at the end of the chapter you see it says and he came and wrote in the city called Nazareth that what might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets he shall be called a Nazarene I think you know that sometimes we get this wrong there's a wonderful truth here that we must get the hold of you see there's an argument from the so-called scholars because there is no way in the Old Testament that it says he shall be called a Nazarene and yet it says that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets mark when you'll be looking at the last one that it might be fulfilled by the prophets and we could easily find that because that was fulfilled but what Matthew is saying is that all the prophets said he should be called a Nazarene you see it isn't that any prophet in the Old Testament used the word Nazareth or Nazarene it was never used I tell you the word Nazareth is not even in the Old Testament and I don't think that Matthew is trying to say that each one of them said this categorically he shall be called a Nazarene I think he's taking it in a general fashion and he's saying all the prophets said this that we would be poor and despised and rejected and be counted as nothing can any good thing come out of Nazareth and all the prophets talked about his loneliness and his poverty and being set at naught and despised and rejected there's another problem and I want to clear this up for good and for ill because I think there's a great mistake being made here let's go back to Judges, we're at the book of Judges let's go back to Numbers chapter 6 verse 1 let's go to Numbers Numbers chapter 6 verse 1 and the Lord speak unto Moses saying he is giving Moses the Lord now speak unto the children of Israel and say unto them then either man or woman shall separate themselves to a vow of a Nazarite to separate themselves unto the Lord he shall separate himself from wine strong drink and shall drink no vinegar of wine nor vinegar of strong drink neither shall he drink any liquor of goats nor if not goats or even drum of goats and all the days of the separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree from the chambers even to the house now I want you to watch the good thing which happens verse 2 it's the vow of a Nazarite it's the vow of a Nazarite now come to the book of Judges chapter 13 now and you know it's Joshua Judges 13 chapter 13 and we're reading a great thing and there is a certain man of Zorah and I want you to pay attention to that because that's the kind of religion a certain man of Zorah of the family of the Danites and if you knew the person that God gave to Dan you'd be able to find good whose name was Manoah and his wife was Baran and Zanoth and the angel of the Lord appeared unto the women and said unto her behold now thou art Baran and Zanoth but thou shalt conceive and bear a son no one shall beware our gravy and drink not wine nor strong drink and eat not any unclean thing for no one shall conceive and bear a son and no evil shall come on his head for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God shall move he shall begin to deliver us and of course the child was Samson and Samson was a Nazarite and do you remember over in chapter 16 let's go over there when he was with Delilah and do you remember she chanted him so many times verse 15 chapter 16 verse 15 and she that is Delilah said unto him that is Samson how canst thou say I love thee when mine heart is not with me thou hast mocked me these three times and hast not told me wherein my great strength lies and it came to pass when she touched him dearly with her words and urged him so that her soul was breached unto death that he pulled her all aside and said unto her thou hast not come originally upon mine head for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb now he was a Nazarite now when we come to our chapter this evening which is Matthew chapter 2 and the chapter ends like this he shall be called a Nazarene you see sometimes people who can put company and say now I'm not the less never tasted wine of any kind he wasn't even allowed to settle bricks and it says that Jesus is a Nazarene and yet he made wine and he took wine with his disciples and so on you see the thing that has not been seen all along is this that all the difference between a Nazarite and a Nazarene is not the same thing when we talk about the being a Nazarene we're talking about his humility and authority and the strength that he was brought up in let me tell you that all the Nazarites were never a Nazarite something was born there in Torah where is Torah? I'll tell you where it is it's just above in there just down south of Bethlehem it's in the kitchen given to God you see another house with a valve it means beauty another image is just a man that lived in the squalor of Nazareth and nobody expected anybody of merit to come from there isn't it thrilling tonight to know that God will look after you no matter what happens isn't it doubly thrilling to see your master teaching the lawlessness we have been looking at the security of the sovereign and we have been looking at his humility of a son now look, let me get this over to you I know it's coming up to Christmas and all the rest of it I've got to go on with the job we're going to look at the child growing and it says he increased eloquent you know the modernists love to come to argue with me an old fellow came once and said didn't he say he knew everything I said the scripture says that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge belong to him, he didn't have anything to say about it I said Peter once said Lord thou knowest all things he said I can't say that he knew all things when he increased in wisdom it's very subtle isn't it then you begin to think about the mind of Christ as far as I'm concerned and as far as Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones and many other great teachers of the word of God and Dr. Ryan said listen the reading of Christ and the mind of Christ is the deepest subject in the book now that's what we're tackling next week and you wouldn't need to miss it because I'm going to explain to you how he knew everything and yet increased in wisdom see you then
