Brother Yun

Brother Yun (1958–present). Born Liu Zhenying on January 1, 1958, in Nanyang, Henan, China, Brother Yun is a Chinese house church leader, evangelist, and author, renowned for his role in the Back to Jerusalem movement. Raised in poverty, he converted to Christianity at 16 in 1974 after his mother’s renewed faith led to his father’s miraculous healing from lung cancer, sparking a family revival. Lacking a Bible, Yun fasted and prayed for one, receiving it after a divine vision guided evangelists to deliver it. He memorized Scripture, including the Gospel of Matthew, and began preaching at 16, reciting entire chapters to villagers, leading to widespread conversions despite China’s clampdown on Christianity in the 1980s and 1990s. As a house church leader, he faced severe persecution, arrested multiple times, tortured, and imprisoned for over seven years, including a 74-day fast he claims sustained him miraculously. In 1997, he escaped Zhengzhou Maximum Security Prison, attributing it to divine intervention, and fled to Germany, where he gained asylum. Yun authored The Heavenly Man (2002) with Paul Hattaway, detailing his persecution and miracles, and Living Water (2008), sharing his teachings; the former won the UK Christian Book of the Year in 2003. Married to Deling, with two children, he now ministers globally, advocating missions to unevangelized nations. He said, “We shouldn’t pray for a lighter load to carry, but a stronger back to endure!”

Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. As you are a Heavenly Father, a great shout and welcome. He is great. Amen. Stretch out your hand with love and faith. Tell your neighbor, Jesus loves you. Jesus loves you, brother. Amen. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. And Jesus Christ wants us to be his workforce to change this city. Amen. Remember, Jesus one day came to this city named... And that city has a plan to send all their teenagers to the graveyard. And a lot of widows were crying for their children. And then Jesus came forth and touched and hold the coffin and said, stop. And he told the mother, don't cry anymore. Some psychiatrists may have a different opinion and said, you should let her cry because that's her only son that died. But if Jesus said, don't cry, that's very simple. She stopped crying. And the Lord said, young man, rise up. Because the timing of the Lord has arrived. For the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear him shall rise again. Amen. And the teenagers of this city need to hear the voice of the Son of God. And Jesus wants to invite us to be his workforce to change this city. And Jesus wants to form us together as a great joyful army of the Lord and change this city. Amen. I personally met the Lord when I was 17 on one evening around 10 o'clock. I didn't know who Jesus was. But I just heard this voice, Brother Yun, get up and start preaching gospel to our west and to our south. So I went to my mom. I said, Mommy, why are you calling me for? At that time, my parents were still up. I said, no one is calling you. Is there something wrong with your head? But when I lay down, this voice was still calling me. I couldn't sleep. I went to my parents again. I said, Mom and Dad, what are you calling me for? My mom said, I'm crazy. My mom said, you are crazy. She said, if the God is calling you, then at least he will call me first because I'm more senior in Christianity. And just like the hymn we sang earlier tonight. It's just like the hymn we sang earlier tonight. The calling from God to preach the gospel to our west and south. gospel throughout all China and it's just like a fire burning within me I could not stop. And then when I see people I will cry. I'm not well educated not to mention to go to any theology school. And I never even met a pastor. When my mom taught us about Jesus Christ, the only thing we learned from her is that as long as you ask in the name of the Lord, you will have it. And that is the only thing I learned is to pray in the name of the Lord. Therefore I knew God has called me. And that's his calling for me to let the gospel preach back to Jerusalem. And I never sensed that this calling would bring me to a situation that was completely without hope. And I was imprisoned formally three times in China. And then by God's grace when I was sent overseas, God gave me a chance to be imprisoned again in a foreign jail. And I met with Pastor Chen in the 90s. And he said, I need to find someone who is able to shake. I said, I'm just someone like that. And the fire of the Holy Spirit was burning fervently within me and that would burn through China and onto other countries. And I remember when we were together, they said, can you just speak less about it? And I said, the Lord Jesus would know what to do. Towards this great field to be harvested in China, the only word I received from the Lord was, you give them food to eat. Even though I really don't have anything to provide, but the Lord's calling said, you feed them. When I sang the first verse, the Lord taught me, give it to me, give it to me, your five loaves and two fish, give them all to me. And then I kept on singing, and then 5,000 were fed and the remaining I should fill 12 baskets. I asked the Lord, if we have a congregation of over 50,000 people, do we still have the remaining for 12 baskets? And I was wondering, China is so great with five loaves and two fish, is that enough to fill the need? And the Spirit of God urged me, and that has become a message. And I said, Lord, if I just put in your hands five loaves and two fish, am I able to fill the need across all five continents? No one dared to answer me, they were laughing at me. I was crazy. I said, I don't know how to speak. I tell you, I know how great my God is. He is the Almighty God. Not only He can fill the need of five continents with five loaves and two fish, there will still be remaining. And therefore the fire within me was burning so strong, made me say, Lord, take me around through every corner of the world. Today, the Spirit of God took me to five continents to visit His own home. At that time, I was looking for the five loaves and two fish. Then suddenly I realized, the five loaves and two fish are me. What my mother taught me is to pray in the name of Jesus. I want to pray and dedicate my two eyes to the Lord. Every day I say, Father, I want to see your great glory. I want to give my eyes a reason. I don't want to see those ugly things, things that you don't want me to see. And I make a deal with my eyes that I will not see anything that God doesn't want me to see. Lord, I offer my two ears to you just like two fish. I only want to hear your voice. And Jesus, my two hands will be like two fishes in a well. I do whatever you want me to do. And the Lord also heard my prayers, Lord, both my two legs are for you. As long as I live, I shall walk with you. Amen. The Lord doesn't just call us to help us. He wants to use us and work through us. He said, all authorities in heaven, on earth, and under the earth have been given to me, and I want to give it to you. Therefore you shall go. I met with Pastor Chen after the second time I was released from the jail, and his sharing was about spiritual warfare. Maybe he doesn't remember what he shared, but I remember vividly what he said. Every message I heard, I kept deep within me, burning like fire. And I knew more clearly who I am after I was set free the second time from jail. And I know I'm nobody. But I know who am I facing. And I know the storm and the wind that's attacking me. And the enemy always says, you know your past, you have all these problems. I say, you know, in your future, you'll have all these problems. And after I was released the second time from the jail, and I had a chance to fellowship with my dear brother, Xi, and we realized, we all agree, that church in China don't need just ritual or doctrines. Or more solid church buildings. We only need Jesus Christ. China needs to hear the name of Jesus Christ. And every day I just feel this fire burning within me. I could do nothing but preach gospel. At that time I was not clear about the vision of back to Jerusalem. Only thing I knew was that God had called me to go south and go west. And marvelously, one particular meeting I was leading, you know, I personally like to sing. When I was leading the service in the name of the Lord, while we were singing this, suddenly there was some old man in the back of the congregation stood up and he was in tears. And I thought I really sang well, huh? I moved some people. And then he came forward and he started scolding me, and he said, you are lost. You have no idea why the writer wrote this song. Because this song was written by the founder of the movement of Back to Jerusalem by China Underground Church. And he came forward to me, I didn't know him, but I felt he was someone who has authority. He kept on saying, you don't understand the heart of the writer of this song. You know, in China there really is no copyright. He said, you know this song was written 40 years ago when God moved someone to the road. And the hymn was talking about move westward to harvest. And then somebody next to me said, you know brother, this is the writer of the song, Brother Zhao. And I said, Brother Zhao, can you explain to me why you wrote this song? You know, when you are asking your brother about their past, they really have a lot to talk about. And before he could even finish saying, he was in tears. And I saw one day in my prayer, that the Lord stood in the northern western part of China, facing the Muslim countries. He said, at the time I just got married. He said, then I shared with my wife what I saw in the vision, and then she ended up selling all she had prior to marriage. And then we walked by foot to preach gospel westwardly. So I said, what was the result? But he said, at the time when we came to the border, the door was shut upon us. And my wife was pregnant at the time, but she was imprisoned, and then both she and the baby died in the jail. He said, I only had a chance, we were both in prison, to see my wife twice briefly. And in the end, she was martyred for this vision. So I said, Brother Zhao, how long were you in prison? He said, more than 40 years. I said, oh Lord, my God, I was in prison twice, but less than 10 years all together. He said, for 40 years, how were you able to survive in prison? I said, I know that when you are kept in jail, there is going to be a lot of weaknesses and a lot of failures. How did you survive these 40 some years? And when I asked him that question, he started to cry and sing. He sang the songs when he was in jail. Oh, Jerusalem in my dreams. Oh, Jerusalem in my tears. I will find you in the house of God. I will find you by the cross of the Lord. And there are still miles before we reach the heavenly Jerusalem. And when I first met him like that, he was just brought forth by a brother sheep. The brief meeting with him has greatly changed my life. That was when he was calling out, He said, for decades, my tears have run dry. The Lord has cut open for me the chain of death. And he has opened up for me this way of glory. But too bad, I am so old now. Only miles before I reach the heavenly Jerusalem. And his vision is to walk by foot all the way back to Jerusalem. Not through train or other vehicle like airplane. When he was sharing that, everybody in the presence cried. I still remember the Spirit of God urged me, so I sang this song. The history of church. And there are still miles before we reach the heavenly Jerusalem. And when I first met him like that, he was just brought forth by a brother sheep. The brief meeting with him has greatly changed my life. But too bad, I am so old now. And there are still miles before I reach the heavenly Jerusalem. We were singing that, you know, that these people are just like great witnesses, like clouds surrounding us. Therefore, let's let go of our heavy burdens and the things that easily entangle us. And regardless of the price of our life or blood, let us face Jerusalem and go all the way. And we're singing a song like this and hold hands in hand. We were crying and saying. And then we sang the song we sang earlier, hold each other's hand and follow Jesus. And a lot of young people amongst us sang the song, I say goodbye to my family, say goodbye to my friends. And I'm going to preach gospel and I shall follow the Lord wholeheartedly. And focusing upon Jesus and Jerusalem, my heart is more determined. Because the common vision we share, we all set aside our differences in denominations or divisions. Yet to our great surprise, we're all together arrested at the same time. And Barna Shee and another sister were captured first. And we rushed there and we saw how the door was open. I said, let's just go in there. And to our surprise, when we walked through the door, there were electrical rods waiting for us to take us down. And there's a video camera right in front of us to shoot who we are. And they took our belt away. And when the Lord called me, He said, you're going to run all the days of your life. And I was captured five times and every time when they tried to capture me, I would run and they would shoot me too. At the time, our training for back to Jerusalem was different from the training overseas. Yes, our principle is we shall pray in the power of the Holy Spirit at any place, in any manner. And we shall testify for Christ's sake and preach gospel any place, any time. And be willing to be imprisoned or suffer for the sake of gospel. And be ready to be martyred for the sake of gospel any time, any place. And what to me was that any time, any place, be ready to run. And I thought, since these are our rules, I better be a good example. I better start running. And then He asked us to keep our hands up, and I was doing that, and I moved backwards slowly. And then to a point, I say, run! And I jump out. I jump on the second floor, but too bad they were prepared for our fleet like that, so people arrest me right away. And I thank God I did not jump onto anybody's head. And they got me and they put me in prison. And it seems to be without hope at the time. But as she knew, I had two nicknames in the jail. One is crazy man. And the second one is that lame. And at the time, the Lord promised me to be crazy for the vision that He has given to me. Because I could not preach gospel in the jail. So I just keep on praying. I broke my two legs, not only because I jumped off from the second floor, also because they beat me up afterwards. I am not a spiritual person 24-7. Especially late at night in the dark, when the pain just excruciating and killing me, I just could not help but throw a fit toward God. I said, Lord Jesus, you called me to preach gospel back to Jerusalem. Look at me. My both legs are broken. I can't even walk. And the more I look at myself, the sadder I became. But there was no point to throw a temper once you are in jail. The only thing I could do is still come to the Lord. I said, oh, Abba Father, you know how I am. Abba Father, you are great. If you set me free this time, I will be good. Abba, you are great. You are the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You are the God of Peter, and Paul, and Silas. You are the God of Paul, and Silas. Open the door. I could not hear a thing. I was in front of God. In the middle of the night, I was singing the same song. I didn't care if it was jail, day, or night. I didn't care where I was and what time it was, I only wanted to praise my God. So I said, Oh Lord, and a lot of people mocked us and teased us saying we cannot receive help from our God. But Lord, You are my strength, You are my shield, You are the one who lifts up my head. And the more I think about my Heavenly Father, the greater He has become. I said, Lord, You know everything about me. And I will wait upon You, Lord. I will wait upon Your words, Lord. I will wait upon You just like watchmen wait upon the dawn. And when I was willing to just wait upon His words, the Lord came to me. Not only He came to me, He came to Brother Shoes' cell and told us. And after I heard what He said, I said, Lord, this is jail, you know. After the Lord listened to my prayer, and I still had a doubt about, Lord, this is the prison we are in. And then God spoke to me deeply and said, being in jail is just a fact, that's not truth. Jesus said, I am the truth. So marvelously. And when I obeyed to His words, and the door opened on me. And while I was walking out of jail, nobody stopped me and said, where are you going, crazy man? Or where are you going, lame? Of course, and neither did I bother to report to anybody. I said, goodbye, I am leaving. And marvelously, the Lord just brought me out of jail, it's like He kicked me, here I am in Europe. I know the time is running out, but I cannot fully describe the great glorious work of God. But I just want to let you know, our Lord is a faithful God, is a God who listens to prayer. And when people say it is impossible, to God all things are possible. Our God is not a God who can love, but cannot help us. He is a God who is loving and also able. Amen. I thank this church for giving me the opportunity to testify for Jesus Christ. If you are now trapped in some kind of prison, you cannot get out. It doesn't matter what kind of jail you are in. Maybe drugs, maybe pornography, the Lord Jesus is able to set you free from it. Once I fled out of the jail, I suddenly realized my legs are healed. So I believe that the will of Jesus Christ has not changed. If you are locked up in a sickly prison, like a cancer, I tell you, don't just listen to doctors telling you there is no hope. Jesus is always hope. He is the will. He is the will. Get up. Just come and come to the Lord. Let's rise up. Oh the Lord, you who are risen from the dead, you recognize your sheep. And you understand fully the condition of your sheep. And I know standing among us there is a group of people whom you have called before. And I know your calling has never changed. And it doesn't matter what kind of condition they may be in now. And in your name I shall proclaim your precious blood. And the power of your precious blood can set us free from the bondage of sin. The power of your precious blood can set us free from all bondage of sin and darkness. Therefore, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, when I start praying, Lord, I pray that your Holy Spirit will fill in everyone's heart. So that people can experience the great power of your healing. So they can walk out from their dark condition. And I pray more people will come to you tonight to offer their lives to you. If you are truly willing to offer your life to Jesus like a bread broken in his hand, I am willing to pray for you. And I believe the Risen Lord has entrusted me a gift to pray for you, so that I can revive again the gift he has installed in you before. I pray in Jesus' name. Amen. Give the time to Pastor Chen. Among us, if there are brothers and sisters who are really willing to offer yourselves to the Lord, like the five loaves and two bread, come forward, I am willing to pray for you. Risen Lord, you are not only our Lord, you are also the Lord of all Americans. You are not only our Lord, but the Lord of all people. You are the Lord of all earth. People who stand here are willing to obey to your calling. Oh Holy Spirit, while we are praying here, you personally send them out. I have seen the face of the Lord turning toward the Muslim countries, Buddha countries. Oh Holy Spirit, call us to rise up and harvest the field together with you. And Holy Spirit, call us so that we can be your workforce to change Los Angeles, to set young people free from the bondage of drugs and pornography. Hallelujah. Jesus Christ, you are the Lord of all land. And this city shall be changed. And I proclaim in the name of Jesus Christ, this city shall be revived from the dead. Oh Lord Jesus, rekindle. Holy Spirit, continue to work and speak. And I proclaim in the name of the Lord, that Buddha countries, the Indian countries, will no longer worship idols, but worship Jesus Christ. And the offspring of Abraham, and the offspring of Abraham, different people from the cities, in the name of Jesus, I bind up the cities. Now everybody, open your mouth. I know when I talk this. Oh Lord, rise up from the cities. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. If your church is in a loop, Oh Holy Spirit, rescue us. Flow out of each one's life. Flow out Holy Spirit. So this city can be filled by the Lord.
