Hattie Hammond

Hattie Philletta Hammond (1907–1994). Born in 1907 in Williamsport, Maryland, Hattie Hammond was a prominent Pentecostal evangelist and Assemblies of God minister known for her powerful preaching and healing ministry. From childhood, she sensed a call to missions, preaching to dolls, animals, and herself in mirrors, and distributing tracts at school with dreams of serving in Africa. At 12, she survived a life-threatening bout of typhoid fever after her pastor anointed her with oil and prayed, marking a turning point in her faith. Saved and baptized in the Holy Spirit at 15 during a tent meeting led by Rev. John Ashcroft, she began boldly witnessing to classmates, dedicating herself to full-time ministry at 16. Her first sermon in Martinsburg, West Virginia, sparked a revival when she spontaneously preached from Galatians 3:1, leading to widespread conversions. Ordained by the Assemblies of God in 1927, she became known as “the girl evangelist,” preaching in major cities like Cleveland, Detroit, and Los Angeles, with her simple message of total consecration to God accompanied by reported miracles and healings. By the 1930s, she was a leading voice in Pentecostalism, ministering globally across 30 countries, speaking at colleges, conventions, and camp meetings. Hammond’s 71-year ministry left a lasting impact on evangelical spirituality, and she died in 1994. She said, “If you ever see Jesus, you’ll never be the same again.”

Sermon Transcription
Praise God, praise God. God bless every one of you. Shall we just look to Jesus? Precious Jesus, this is your Word. This is your wonderful Word. You said it's the opening up of the Word that give us light. And as we open this precious Book, will you open up its truth to us and let us see Jesus, put a deeper desire in our hearts for Him. Oh, baptize us, I pray thee, baptize us with that strength that will enable us to give Him everything. He is so worthy, He's so worthy. Cover us with Thy sacred pure blood and breathe Thy quickening breath over us and let Jesus be glorified as we look into His sacred Word. In Jesus' name. And everybody says, Amen. God bless you. We've had a beautiful week this far, haven't we? Yes. Are you getting any help? I want to thank you for worshipping Jesus. Just never stop worshipping Him. He is so worthy to be praised and worthy of our worship and adoration. Praise His name. Yes, I've given Him all there is of me and if I had a thousand lives, I'd give every one of them to Jesus, every one of them. I like them to say, Miss Hammond, because I know in this day and age, folks sit out there and if I were announced as Mrs. Hammond, in this day and age, they'd be wondering, maybe how many times she's been divorced. No. No, when I was a very young girl, in fact, when I was five years old, Jesus called me into the ministry. When I was five years old, I knew what He wanted in my life and when I was five years old, He asked me, He began dealing with me about surrenders and giving up certain things and each time He talked with me. Oh, that's all right, Jesus. That's all right. If that's what you want, that's all right, Jesus. In fact, He called me into the ministry before I knew the expression, born again. I didn't know what that meant and He called me into the ministry before I knew what that meant and whatever He asked for, whatever He said, that's all right, Jesus. That's all right and one of the things that He said to me at that time was, you will never be married. That's not in my plan for you and I said, oh, that's all right, Jesus. That's all right. If that isn't in your plan, that's all right. I just want your plan. I love you, Jesus. I just want to please you and walk with you and do your will. So that's all right, Jesus. That's all right and it's been all right all of these years and folks, come up. Oh, girls. Will all you girls clap just for Jesus, will you? Girls, it isn't a hard life at all to walk with Him and let me say this to you, don't you let anybody pressure you into something that isn't the will of God for you. Say amen. Thank you, girls. Thank you, girls. Now, I'll tell you another little secret. When they come up to me and they say, and you never married? No, but I want to tell you something if you don't tell anybody. I never married, but there is a man in my life, very much so, very much so and it's wonderful just to walk with him. He walks with me, he goes before me, he's my business manager, he plans everything and then tells me what he's planned. He takes the initiative and he tells me where I'm supposed to go. I was coming down the stairs in my home one day. I have a house and I do things around the house. I have a housekeeper, but I dust once in a while and that's what I was dusting, just coming down the stairs with something as mundane as a dust cloth in my hand and I was dusting the balusters in a two-story house and he came. Oh, I knew he was there and I said, Jesus, you're here and he said, yes, we are going to the Orient. I said, we are? And I knew, that I knew, that I knew I would be ministering in the Orient and wasn't he sweet to say, we are going to the Orient? He didn't say, you're going or I'm sending you, but he said, we are going to the Orient. I didn't write one letter, I didn't push one door open, I didn't say a word to anybody, but when he and I were alone, we talked it over and I said, Jesus, you will have to get me ready, you will have to prepare me, I don't know anything about this, but I'll just wait till you get arrangements made and in about two weeks, I got a long distance telephone call from Japan will you come and conduct a retreat for the missionaries? I said, oh yes, Jesus has already told me about this and he and I are coming and that dear missionary, what do you suppose he said, I'm so glad Jesus is coming too. Do you want to hear some more? I was in Seattle in the Northwest Bible College. It was my last meeting before I went to Japan and the President and his wife took me out to the airport and to them it looked like this little woman alone walking out to that airplane and the President's wife wrote a note immediately when she got back home and she said, I cried when I saw you walking out to that airplane alone, alone. I got a letter back to her right away. I said, honey, I didn't go alone. The presence of Jesus was so wonderful. When I got on that plane, I'm telling you the truth, when I got on that plane and sat down in my seat, his presence was so wonderful that I moved over to the next seat for him to sit down. All right, now I'll tell you the truth. Do you want to hear the truth? Now I'll tell you the truth. Folks will come up and they say, do you mean you travel all over the world alone? No, honey, I don't travel alone. I have an evangelistic party of seven and I've always had an evangelistic party of seven ever since I started over 50 years ago. We have been seven, but let me tell you something lovely. Only have to buy one airplane ticket. We all seven sit in the same seat. I think he's tremendous. I think he's wonderful. Don't you? I hear you. Who are the seven? Are they here with you? Yes, they're all here with me. The Father says, certainly I'll be with you. That's two of us. Jesus says, I'll never leave you nor forsake you. How many is that? That's three of us. The Holy Spirit says, I'll be right inside of you. That's four of us. The angel of the Lord encamps round about. That's five of us, right? And goodness and mercy follows me all the day. Hallelujah. Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. So how could I be lonely? I'm not lonely and I'm not alone. And you don't have to be either. Cultivate the presence of the Lord. Welcome that presence. Just ask Him to saturate you with God-consciousness. God-consciousness. You know, we belong to Him. God is our home. God is our source. God is our beginning and God is our ending. We came from God. We're going back to God. Amen? Yeah. He wants us to live in Him. Just live in Him. Just live in Him. Live in Him. He taught, He Himself taught me this. He taught me this. When I was a little girl, I had a, I loved goldfish. And I had, I had a beautiful aquarium, or bowl, rather, of goldfish in the living room. And I had three unusual goldfish. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Their habitat was that water. They just lived in that water. They had water over them, water all around them, water underneath of them. That was their home. That was their habitat. That's where they lived and moved and had their being in that water. And Father said to me, That's the way I want you to live in me. Amen? Yeah. Yes. His banner over us is what? Right there. He's a wall of fire round about us and the glory in the midst of us. And underneath is what? The everlasting arms. So there's God under us, God over us, God around us, God in us. He wants us to live in God-consciousness. Truly, literally in Him to live and move and have our being. Amen. Amen. Amen. What else can I tell you about myself? I don't know how I got on to this. What else can I tell you? But if this is what the Lord wants, it's all right with me to share with you, share God. I just want to share God with you. And these lovely young people came and said, Tell us the answer. Tell us your secret. Tell us your secret. So I'm telling you my secret. What else can I tell you? Oh, everybody wants to know my age. And well, they'll just come up and they're too polite to just ask right out. But they make little hints and I know what they want. One of the ministers said to me, And if I had finished his sentence, it would have been, How old are you now? And I said, Oh, that's all right, brother. I don't mind telling you my age. Not at all. You know, I'm a very old woman. I am as old as the ancient of days. Yes, I am. Yes, I am. You see, I was in God. I was in God before I got in this thing. I was in God. God is our beginning. God is our source. We came from God. We came from God. I don't tie myself up to this thing. I don't limit myself to this thing. I'm not bound. I'm not bound by this thing. One of the preachers said to me, I've heard about you for so many years, I would think you'd be a hundred by this time. I said, Oh, I'm older than that. I'm older than that. I was in God before I got in this thing. And I can prove it to you from the scriptures. You see, God breathed that breath of lives into Adam. That breath of life came from God. Right? Right? And Adam begat and begat and begat and begat and begat and begat and begat and came all down through the generations until my parents begat me and from the time God breathed into Adam there never has been a cessation of that breath of life. So the breath of life that I'm breathing tonight came from God. Came from God. I came out of God. I was in God before I got into this. And God just let me have this for a little while and when He's soon as He's gets His will done in me and gets me ready to come back home I want to get out of here. There isn't one single thing down here that could hold me or that I'm interested in. I don't like it down here. I don't like it down here. I want to get out of here and get back to God. And that's the reason I'm letting Him work on me and I want Him to work in me and finish His will in me. It isn't until He's through working out here preaching sermons and all that business God's greatest work is not through us but in us. Restoring in us the likeness and the image of His wonderful Son. And when He gets me ready to go back home I want to get out of here. And so I tell folks wherever I go if the Lord should call me while I'm here I wouldn't thank anybody for trying to raise me from the dead. You just leave me alone and let me get out of here and on back to the heart of God where I belong. Amen. I'm on my way back there and I want to go just as fast and as soon as God's work is finished in me. But you see none of us are ready to not a person here tonight is ready for heaven yet. If you were ready God would have taken you but none of us are ready yet because we're all caught. We're still here. So not one of us can boast of being any more ready than the rest of us. When you're ready He'll take you. But I'm not ready yet because I'm still here. And I know very well He's still working in me. Changing us. Getting us ready. Getting us ready for what He has for us in the eternal ages with Him. You know this little thing down here is only three score year and ten. And He's given us this time this three score year in time this probationary period to get ready to get ready for the real thing. And that's what He has for us in our real ministry. This isn't the real thing you know. This isn't my real ministry. That will come in the eternal ages upon ages with Him. And He's getting us ready for that. We have to qualify for that. He rewards us for our works. We'll get rewarded for that. But we have to qualify for our place and our position with Him. You see there are those over there who have thrones and there are those who have no thrones. There are those who have crowns and there are those who have no crowns. No crowns. There's a multitude just inside the gate. All that crowd has is a palm branch. That's all they have won. That's all they qualify for. You'll be rewarded alright for your work. But if you want to place a position with Him that will be determined by how like Him we are. How much of His likeness and image has been produced in us. And that speaks of character, qualities. That's the reason He leaves us here after He saves us. That's the reason He doesn't take us home to Heaven soon as He saves us. We're not ready for Heaven. We have no character. We have no qualifications. Our sins are forgiven. That's just negative. Something's gone. Sins are taken away. But nothing added. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Put on. Build character. Christ's likeness. Grow in His likeness and in His image through tests, through trials, through temptations, through tragedies, through sorrows, through tears. That's why they're allowed. That's why He permits them. That's why He brings them. That's why He arranges suffering and heartache and heartbreak. That's why, not to destroy us, but to build character, qualities within us, to bring forth longsuffering, patience, meekness, love, faith, gentleness, kindness. All those beautiful qualities that makes Jesus who He is. And that's why we love Him. He is so beautiful in every way. You've been singing of His character qualities in your singing tonight. You sang, He's magnificent, He's excellent, He's glorious. How did He get that way? Honey, He's a man of sorrow, acquainted with grief, tempted in all like as we are, yet He came through it victoriously, without sin, because thou hast loved righteousness and hated iniquity. Therefore has the Lord thy God anointed Him with the oil of gladness above all of His fellows. He has no equals, but He wants to bring many sons to glory. And so He's working on you and He's working on me to change us, change us, transform us, sanctify us, release us, deliver us, redeem us, redeem us. Out of all of this thing that we're caught up in, that we hate and want to get out of and free from. He's made provision, I told you yesterday. He has made provision for our past, our present, and our future. That's all there is to us. And the closer you get to Him and the more you know of Jesus, the more you will know He is well qualified to take us through. If we'll just throw ourselves into God, cultivate His acquaintance, live in His presence, in Him live, move and have your being. Walk with Him, talk with Him, He'll talk with you. Paul was an old man when he was still saying, I want to know Him. I want to know Him. I want to win. What did Paul mean? Surely by that time Paul was saved. Wasn't he? Certainly was. I want to win Him. Who wins the bride group? The bride. The bride. Revelation 19 says, The marriage of the Lamb is come, and His wife hath made herself ready. There's something for us to do. This is why I speak of submission. This is why I speak of abandonment. This is why I say, Give Him all there is of you. This is why I speak of consecration. This is why I talk of a cross and a yoke. This is His language. This is His language. This is the food of the bride of Christ. His cross. The Lamb nature. Surrender, submission, meekness. Christ-likeness. Honey, you can live just as close to Him as you want to live. He's constantly calling, calling, calling. He loves you. He loves you so much you'll know He died for you. He'll do anything to get you to Himself. He'll break any bondage in your life. He'll deliver you from any habit. He'll forgive any sin. He'll cleanse you and wash you and sanctify you and change you. If you'll just fall into His hands and let Him have His way with you. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Say Amen. Amen. How wonderful Jesus is. Say His name. You love Him, don't you? Yes. Do you want to love Him more? Yes. Yes. Seek to love Him the way He wants to be loved. Yes. Let us stand. We've had a full day today, haven't we? Yes. Have you had a good day? Have you touched Jesus today? Has He touched you? Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. Honey, don't go home and turn on the television. I beg of you, please don't. Please don't. The presence of Jesus is so beautiful in your life, isn't it? This morning, He was here this morning. And some of the folks, well, it was almost 1 o'clock when some came and said, I don't want to go. I don't want to go. His presence is here. Yes, there's an entirely different world out there. Don't go home and turn on the television. Stay in His Word. Stay in prayer. I won't ask you to promise. Take the name of Jesus with you. Child of sorrow and of woe. It will joy and comfort give you. Take it, then where are you? Precious name. Oh, how sweet. Hope of earth and joy.
