Sermon Transcription
Good morning to you from Hebrews, chapter 10. You know that we've been considering over our meetings so far, this is our third meeting, and we've been considering the theme of the Passover lamb and the blood of Christ. This is our theme, the Passover lamb and the blood of Christ. And it must be clearly understood by every one of us that in many ways the Christian gospel does not fit in at all with natural philosophy. What do I mean? I mean, if you would talk to anybody about saying, well, how do you work out someone's problems and the solution to them? You can talk about their environment, their background, the influences on them, etc., etc. And then if you bring into the solution something called the blood of Christ, of course it's not a logical progression, it's the introduction of something totally new, totally different to anything we could think of in the realm of our human personality. The blood of Christ. And yet the very center of the gospel is the blood of Jesus Christ, shed for you and me. And we've taken the symbols this morning, the body, the blood of Jesus Christ. In some ways they are themselves the symbol that Christ is our Passover lamb and his blood is shed for us. Now, this is a very simple truth that each one of us must believe and receive the effect of the blood of the lamb in our lives. We must receive believing in this blood of the lamb. And of course, the effect of the blood is so powerful, so mighty, that the blood of Jesus Christ cleansed us from all sin. Now, there can be no greater power than the power to cleanse from sin. Now, that is good news to you if you want to be free from sin. If you love sin and just want to go to heaven, well, it may not be so good. You may want to go to heaven and not to be free from sin so totally. But if this is what you want, to be holy unto the Lord, then this is the best news of all, that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin. Simple testimony, consistent through the Scripture. Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. And there it is, repeated again and again throughout the Scripture, that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin. And there in the book of Revelation, who are these? They are they who come out of great tribulation and have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Isn't that wonderful? If you go through great tribulation, tribulation will not make your clothes white. Trouble, pressure. But in the midst of great tribulation, these turned to God and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Praise the Lord. Well, let us turn then to Hebrews chapter, we're actually going to turn to Hebrews chapter 9 and 10, but I want to start in chapter 10 and I want you to see in chapter 10 and verse 22, sorry, verse 19. Having therefore reverence, boldness, to enter in to the holiest, and I have the words of all, the holiest of all, in heaven, on earth, wherever you like to think of it as being, the holiest of all. By the blood of Jesus. By a new and living way, which he has consecrated for us through the veil that is to stain his flesh. And having a high priesthood with the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies also washed with pure water by the Holy Spirit. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering, for he is faithful, I promise. Let us consider one another to provoke, to love, and to good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together as the man of some age, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the day approaching. Now, I've read that passage because this is the consequences of what goes before, obviously. When he said in verse 19, having therefore brethren, boldness to enter in, and then he goes on to draw all the conclusions which we as the people of God must draw from these great and mighty truths. And they are there, in those verses, and we will come to them in due time. If there's time this morning, we will come to them this morning. But the thing is there, there are consequences of realizing this truth of the power of the blood of Jesus. There are consequences. And they're here. And we need to listen to them and obey them. And so, we're going to come to this place. Therefore, brethren, why? Because of the power of the blood of Jesus, we must have boldness to enter in to the holiest of all by the blood of Jesus. The consequences are, first of all, we enter in. Second, in verse 22, we draw near. Third, in verse 23, we hold fast the profession of our faith. Fourth, in verse 24, we consider one another to provoke each other. Not to anger, but to provoke each other to love and good works. Then, literally not forsaking the assembly of ourselves together. And then finally, exhorting one another. These are the things we do in the light of the power of the blood of Jesus Christ. The things that we do. But let us then consider the power of the blood of Jesus. Let's consider this. Let us begin our study, if you like, on this tremendous and powerful subject. In Hebrews chapter 9, verse 21, we'll begin this subject. Now, I want to bring out several things that are accomplished by the blood of Jesus Christ. And they're listed here. I'm listing them in a kind of a logical order there. Here in these chapters, there's more than I'm going to say today. But I'm going to bring out several of the effects of the blood of Jesus Christ. And here in chapter 9, on verse 21, we have the introduction of one of them. In verse 21, it says this, Moreover, Moses sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry, and almost all things are by the law purged with blood. And without shedding of blood, there is no putting away of sin, there is no forgiveness, there is nothing. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these, that is, physical blood. But the heavenly things themselves purged with better sacrifices than these. For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the truth. But Christ is entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us. And here we have this declaration that by the blood of Jesus the heavenly places are made clean. The purification of heavenly places. Now, he brings this out by describing the way the tabernacle was purified with blood. And he says that the tabernacle with its three stages is a picture of heaven. And heavenly places themselves need to be made clean. Now, at this point you begin to say wait a moment, is the heaven need to be made clean? We knew earth was defiled, but was heaven defiled by sin? And we may pause for a moment because many people believe that the headquarters of sin is earth. Now, I'm not saying that the headquarters of sin is the throne of God, God forbid. No, no, no. But what you must remember is that sin did not begin on earth. It began in the heart of a heavenly being, one of those great mighty angels of God created in holiness, created to be there forever before him, beholding his face. There, one of those mighty angels conceived sin in his heart and rose up in rebellion against God and was cast out of heaven. This was the beginning of sin. Sin began right there in that place and somehow in the events that followed we read in the Old Testament that Satan had access to approaching to God through his rites, whatever they were, and he could accuse Job before God and he could accuse God of all kinds of things and accuse man to God and represent man to God in a rite that would make man seem so wicked and so devious. Even the people of God he accuses, he accused day and night before God. This is what the Bible says. So that Satan was constantly accusing the brethren before God day and night in heavenly places. And here it tells us very simply that in the picture of the tabernacle the blood was carried through to cleanse the whole tabernacle and in the outworking of it the heavenly place of themselves Christ appeared not now in a tabernacle on earth but when he went to appear before the Father on high in the resurrection and when he ascended up on high he stands right into the presence of God right before the presence of God right there before the Father and there by his blood he has cleansed everything all the heavenly places right through what did this mean? Well the sin of Satan and the sin of the powers of darkness lies very much in their power to accuse and the use of their word and somehow right there before all the throne of God even there there was this lie this great lie one of the greatest lies that has ever been pronounced the lie against God the lie against man it's the lie that we hear from Satan all the time it's the lie that is spoken he seeks to whisper it to make this lie to be known and he proclaims that God does nothing about the fall of man that's his lie and that man is so lost that he can never be redeemed this is his lie the lie of Satan is that the work of sin is irredeemable that nothing can ever be done to bring a sinner back to God the lie of Satan is to make a man so strong in unbelief and darkness that he believes in his darkness that there is no power that can ever redeem him from sin and he is the Lord Jesus Christ presenting his own hands and feet and side presenting the blood before the Father on high and by his entrance into the holiest of all there is a declaration of what God has done to redeem sinners from their sin because it is absolutely clear that Satan himself seemed not to understand he could not grasp the power of the blood of Jesus he could not grasp the power of the love of God that God would not let sin be an eternal damnation for man he would not let it happen and in the heart of the darkness of Satan he did not believe that the love of God would prevail even in the most dire circumstances of the cross he did not believe that God would love us right into the end of the power of sin he believed that at some point God would curse the human race write it off and put it in the bin now I don't know what you do when something goes wrong one of the easiest things if you think about the original sin of Adam and Eve and all that went wrong the easiest thing for God to have done would have been to say right this one's failed Adam's gone I'll start again with another the easiest thing for God to do is just to get rid of you and me cause us never to exist wipe us off and say that's it but God said no I will give my son to them I will love them unto the end I will love them right through every darkness and sin I will give my own son to be the very sacrifice for their sins and when Jesus was crucified for our sins he hung there bearing the punishment and the agony and the shame of all our sin until it was gone you know that if you heard of this girl named Johnny you heard of Johnny and Johnny was this girl who died in America and she jumped off into this pool and you probably know the story she hit a rock and she broke her neck and she was brought out of the water alive but paralyzed from the neck down and as she came to faith in various things and everything happened she had this deep bitterness in her heart that why was she allowed to suffer this? why? it's a great question and then someone said to her the word of God one day because she felt she couldn't move her hands she couldn't move her feet she couldn't do anything and someone said to her one day she said that this friend said to her that Jesus Christ had become paraplegic if you like in that word paralyzed on the cross with his hands and his feet for her and she realized that he had been paralyzed just like her on that cross unable to move he had accepted total identification with her condition he had not just spoken a word to try and deal with something he had himself so identified with all she was he had become identified, identical in his condition on the cross we will never understand the extent to which Jesus Christ by his identification on the cross with sin with sinness we will never fully understand the depth of the pain and the agony of the cross but all we know is that he identified with her in a totally lost condition and at that moment when Jesus Christ hung on that cross you've got to understand this when he hung on the cross and he said father forgive them for they know not what they do and when he hung on the cross and he said my God, my God why hast thou forsaken me and when he hung on the cross and he said he was finished and when he hung on the cross and said father into thy hands I commend my spirit when he hung there on that cross speaking these words with such love you've got to realize that those words spoke right through all of heaven and exposed the lies of Satan and contradicted every word that was ever raised against God and man to declare to every human being in all places in heaven and on earth that all should hear the wonderful sound that God has loved man right to the end of his sin and darkness and has provided a way of escape out of sin by the cries of the Christ from the cross there is the cleansing of the heavenly place and because of this the accuser of our brethren was cast down and he rejoiced because now before God there is no voice that can be raised because whatever voice is raised there stands Jesus Christ there is no accuser there is not one whether demon or man there is not one voice to be raised to hinder you coming to God there is not one voice not one word not one accusation not one opposition there is no opposition to stop you coming to God the way is made clear you know when Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life no man comes to the Father but by me he was stating this very truth now he was always the way but you also realise he had to become the way by being the sacrifice of sin he had always been the way to the Father but because of sin he had to become the answer to sin and therefore the way had to be unblocked not that Jesus had to be unblocked but the way in our hearts and lives had to be unblocked that we might come through that we might walk in that way that eternal way so Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life no man comes to the Father but by me now put it utterly positively I am the way the truth and the life I am the open door men come to the Father by me all men, all women can come to the Father by me the way is open and that is the first effect of the blood of Jesus Christ the purge of the heavenly places the voice of the Son of God sounds like a trumpet call throughout heaven, throughout earth for many more years but heaven itself knows not one voice of opposition against the sinner returning to God the heavenly places have been purged by the blood of Jesus that's the first thing the second thing that we read here in chapter 10 and in verse 17 very simple thing their sins their iniquities will I remember no more promise through the blood of Jesus Christ that there is utter forgiveness through the blood of Jesus Christ utter forgiveness now there is no more liberating power than the power of forgiveness just the other week a woman stood up in our fellowship in Epsom and she had she had this deep unforgiving heart against someone she had had it for years she said she had it since a child I think she had this deep grudge against someone and she couldn't forgive and then the Lord had given her the power to forgive this person and she had done it and she was utterly liberated she said I've prayed it's gone from me the bondage of it and it was the power of forgiveness the power of forgiveness that was the someone forgiving the tremendous liberating power of forgiveness you know that I don't know if I can remember the the names of the people involved but one of them was a you may know this story but this is the this is a girl, a Vietnamese girl named Kim Phuc remember that anybody remember that name it's the girl who was pictured in Vietnam fleeing from a village being bombed with napalm if you open any history book on that period you will see that girl running naked and behind her are the bombs and this screaming horrible face the agony of the napalm bombs and the bomber the man who bombed that that village it's forgotten his name I've got it written down somewhere that man he bombed that village and he was told by the American general who ordered it that there was no people living in that village he bombed the village that's how they tried to get rid of the Vietcong guerrillas because they used to go down into holes there was a sniper fire and an American soldier was killed, they radioed and they napalmed the whole area to kill everything forest everything but the Vietcong went down into holes and survived the napalm bombs and afterwards they just came out and continued but they bombed that area and he got back from his raid there were the pictures of the world press, they got these pictures very rare pictures those stunning pictures that flashed all around the world of these people being bombed, and he was the one who died and guilt settled on that man's soul he went back up to the wall his marriage broke up I think he was married and divorced several times, until at last he found the Lord Jesus who gave him his head Nguyen Van Kim Phuc in Vietnam herself found the Lord Jesus amazing miracle and then she came to America and there was a meeting of veterans of the Vietnam war and she said I want to go to that, I want to meet if I can, I want to meet the man who bombed us on that day and the two of them met in front of the conference and she forgave him she forgave him so I want to express it before you, I forgive you and the power of guilt that has ruined his life until he received forgiveness from Jesus and the power of sin against until he's been able to forgive, it's the tremendous power of forgiveness and the wonderful releasing power that a man can stand utterly free and know he is forgiven and he is forgiven. Now here is the fountain of forgiveness God said their sins and iniquities alone were no more. Why? Forgiveness says Ephesians through the blood of Jesus you know the verse when Jesus said Father forgive them those little words forgive them spoken by God the Son offered up as the sacrifice for our sins Father forgive them the power of those words to undermine the kingdom of Satan the kingdom of unbelief, anyone who will believe in Jesus will forgive his sins will know the inflooding of power and of light, the blood of Jesus Christ is powerful the blood is not just what was said, it's what spoke. When blood is shed, what speaks you know that when blood is shed most often, the great cry is, here in America you hear, I'm not saying it's anything other than natural, normal the great cry is for revenge but you know what this will bring more desire for revenge encounter revenge, encounter revenge, the end of the cycle of it Israel deep down there is a power to forgive, the power to forgive, and here it is, the powers of all forgiveness their sins and iniquities I remember no more why will God remember our sins and iniquities no more, why will he never ever be able to think of them, they cannot come into his mind, why, because he looks on the blood of Jesus now but, if I said to you give this to me, what's my name give this to me, do you want me to remember your name I remember your name actually I don't so I don't need to go around and I could go around to Samuel I think did you hear, pretty good often I have this ability to hear a name and forget it within about 30 seconds I teach German and I I sometimes, you know that goldfish have a memory of 20 seconds so that they believe they're always in a new tank, they're always discovering a new part of the ocean, that's what they say it's like when they get bored going out in a tank well I believe that my students have a memory of about 30 seconds so I teach them something and 30 seconds later I have to repeat it, I've got my students here, sorry sorry about that anyway I'm talking about my students at school you're right, and then 30 seconds later they've forgotten what I've taught them this is quite common I believe I'm sure I see you and your students have got a longer memory than that well I can confess that I was once a student and I've forgotten all the mathematics I was ever taught I'm quite proud of the fact actually but anyway that's weakness to forget because it is not weakness in God to forget, it's an act of his will it's an act of his being that he will blot the memory of your sin so out of his being, and only God can do this so that your sin is gone completely as if it was now written in a history book about somebody who lived long ago but not you so that your sins are now the story of another person God has blotted the memory of your sins out forever so if they are raised by anybody, even you yourself he will not accept it, he will say that is not on my record books, it's gone I will remember them, no more and you cannot go against God's will I will remember it no more, this is the power of the God as you and you know that if you are sinned against one thing you might forget is algebra, I've forgotten algebra I've forgotten logarithms I assume that's to do with maths not music logarithms, but anyway sorry about that but the thing is, I've forgotten all those things one thing that the human heart does not forget, it does not forget hurt one thing you must know is the past is not dead by time time does not kill hurt the past is not dead it is not even past, it is in the present past hurt is not past it's present, until you forgive it and you let it go from you once and for all and you forgive the person who hurt you and in that moment when you exercise that power of forgiveness the hurt passes into oblivion by the power of the death of Jesus Christ the wonderful power of the blood is to liberate us from the past look into chapter 10 verse 14 sorry, chapter 10 let's go into rather chapter 9 verse 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, here it is the blood of Christ the blood of the Lamb, the blood of our Passover, who threw the eternal spirit off himself without thought to God purge your conscience from the guilt of dead works to set you free, to serve the living God here is the power of the blood of Jesus this is my third thing, to set you free from guilt in your conscience and see it there, this is not now the cross in terms of what happens on the cross this is the permanent effect of the blood by the fact that our Saviour stands before the throne of God notice he is declaring the constant power of the blood of Jesus he is standing before the throne of God for us with the power to purge our conscience so guilt is broken sins are forgiven and heaven itself knows not one voice of Satan or demon anywhere to oppose it this is the power of the blood we then turn to the fourth thing on my list this is a list but look I'm talking about the Son of God standing before the throne of God showing the Father he doesn't have to show, he looks on those wounds in a moment we can turn to this but look at this in just a second in verse 19 where we started having therefore brethren, now this is the power of that word therefore, having therefore brethren this is why we have boldness to enter into the Holy it's because God has made the way through his Son so the virtue is not in my own life it's in the blood of his Son so if I were to say I can't come, what I'm saying is Jesus your blood was in vain the greatest honour you can give the blood of Jesus is to do what he said come, I know a man who said he said I can't come to Jesus he said it would be such a fraud he said I've lived all my life without God I can't come at the end of my life to God, he's old man now he said I don't want to come I don't think it's fair, he's a man of gentlemanly honour but actually he's bringing great dishonour to the blood of Jesus and he's trying to retain personal honour as if to say I'm going to be above God and decide how best to decide these things no, the truth is this the only honour we can give the blood of Jesus is to come and to come boldly I notice that word boldly having therefore boldness the thing is you need the scripture to persuade you of this because one of the things you will feel is you are unworthy of the blood of Jesus the thing you won't see is that we're not talking about our worthiness we are not worthy but what we do see is that the Lamb is worthy and by the worthiness of the Lamb and by the blood of the Lamb I must have boldness I must come sinful dark, in bondage without any grounds whatever reason it is, whatever sin I may have there must be nothing must hold me back because the blood of Jesus has made the way I'm in boldness to enter into the Holy Spirit so I come just as I am without one plea except that his blood was shed for me and that you bid me come to the old Lamb of God I come and none of us must ever sink back into a hesitation of coming to the Lamb of God we must not put off for any reason being reconciled with God whether it be something that occurred yesterday or something that got into your life just very recent it doesn't matter how recent the only thing you can do is get it right and come boldly to the throne of grace alright the fourth thing on my list is in chapter, well it's in various verses in chapter 10 but let's look at verse 10 by the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all now look at chapter 10 and verse 1 the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of those things sorry can never with those sacrifices which they offer year by year continually make their comments there unto Christ for then would they not have ceased to be offered because of the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins verse 4 for it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sin and the word here in these negatives he's telling you here what the blood of the old covenant could never do it could never make your conscience free, it could never purge you it could never take away sins but now he's comparing it with the blood of Jesus which sanctifies us so now it's put it all in the positive and say the blood of Jesus Christ does make the comments perfect the blood of Jesus Christ does purge the worshippers and verse 4 the blood of Jesus Christ takes away sins now notice verse 1 of chapter 10 make the comments there unto perfect, here's the word comments, are you a comment you have to be a comment eventually you become an overcomer but first you're a comment and the great secret is to be a comment later as I say you become the overcomer but the great thing here is you're a comment, you have to be a comment unto not to the blood of wolves and goats but a comment to the blood of Jesus you have to comment and the wonder of this is that you begin to be a comment now you bring your life, your sin your shame you bring your life you come to the Lord Jesus now if I were to tell you of testimonies of people who have come I remember the testimony of one particular man who was a minister and he became quite a prominent minister in America he became so prominent he became a famous theologian and he was he became pastor of a very large church I can't remember his name famous man but this man in his liberal theology didn't believe in the word of God he didn't believe all these things and he just preached he lived a worldly life and a Godless life not free from sin all these things and then suddenly he heard the truth he heard that Jesus could wash him free from sin ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... oh Jesus Now, I want to tell you of testimonies of people who have come, I remember the testimony of one particular man who was a minister, and he became quite a prominent minister in America, he became so prominent he became a famous theologian and he became pastor of a very large church, I can't remember his name, famous man, but this man in his liberal theology didn't believe in the word of God he didn't believe in all these things and he just preached and lived a worldly life and a godless life, not free from sin and all these things and then suddenly he heard the truth, he heard that Jesus could wash him free from sin and he began to come, and because of his background he found it so hard, he found so many doubts, so many fears, so many conflicts but he kept coming, and he struggled and he wrestled with himself, and he wrestled with himself for years, keeping on coming until one day as he came to the blood of Jesus, suddenly the blood of Jesus so burst upon him as a living power through the power of the Holy Spirit, he was flooded with the Holy Spirit, he was baptised with the Holy Spirit, he was cleansed from sin, his life was renewed he left his church, he began a new ministry, and he's ministering today about these things wonderful, and this is what he said, he said it took me a long time keeping on coming, wrestling with myself, wrestling to get through he said but I tell you this, he said there is no other place to go, he said there is no other way he said you may say you've tried this and you've tried, you might even come to the Lord and you might say well I didn't find it so powerful but he said I had to keep coming because there was no other place, and as I kept coming he was a comer unto the blood of Jesus he kept coming and he wrestled and he said it's the only place, and it's the real place, and because it's the only place, there is no other way of salvation there is no other way of coming to the end of sin, there is no other place in which guilt's fire can be broken no other place of forgiveness, no other place of deliverance from sin, he said in the end it's worth it he said when I entered in by the blood of Jesus, my life was so transformed he said if it had taken me a hundred years it would have been worth it a small price to pay, but the thing is this, that the time it takes a man to get in is his fault not God's if it takes a man a hundred years, it's not because God is holding him out a hundred years, it's because the man is overcoming his pride, his unbelief he's getting through repentance, there is no other way than to be a comer to Jesus and you are to come to Jesus, and you are to come to Jesus, pressing through until you know you have passed through that veil we could describe his deliverance from sin in different ways, one way here is a new heart but I want to go on to the last one that I want to mention here, in the virtue of his blood it's there in verse 19, having therefore brethren boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus he said that when the Passover lamb was slain, there was a door of blood, in verse 23, by a new and living way Jesus is the eternal way, he is not new, but the way to be free from sin was new when he offered up himself on the cross, the way to God became the way out of sin to God on the cross, by a new and living way, which he has consecrated for us through the veil, that is to say, his flesh and this is the most amazing power of the blood of Jesus that by that blood I pass through a door, like the Passover lamb's blood shed over the doorway, that I go through the blood being cleansed, forgiven, delivered, washed purged from my sin, my life is free, and I go through that blood, I enter into another dimension I enter into the dimension of the spirit of God and I find myself, not now in a place where I'm on the beginner's bench I do not enter by the blood of Jesus into the beginner's course I enter by the blood of Jesus into the holiest of all now this is not a description of something that we just pick, oh that's interesting, that's not a description of being saved no, this is a description of what it means to enter by the blood of Jesus into the spirit of God the holiest of all enters me and I enter into the holiest of all and that is why the dimension of salvation is not just a mental thing that I say I'm saved because I believe that no, no, no, no, the dimension of salvation is a conscious state of life into which I pass, I enter into the holiest of all holiness is a place, it's a person, it's a fellowship, it's an atmosphere, it's the dimension of the spirit of God it is not a mental state, it is a spiritual state and I enter into the dimension of the power of the spirit of God, the holiest of all now consider that phrase, the holiest, not holy in the terms of man but the holiest place that exists in all eternity, the holiest of all it's the fountain of holiness, it's the holiest place of all having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest be holiest that holiness should be the power of your life to keep you holiness be the dynamic of your living to keep you in the way of God holiness is not the keeping of a few rules holiness is the indwelling of the power of the blood of Jesus it's the power of life within us the holiest of all and there we come right through into that holiest state we're not here comparing man with man, we're comparing the holiest state of God that can ever be, is open to you and me we're not now looking at a power that can make me morally improved in the sense that I can just stop doing this bad habit or stop doing that bad habit no, this is the power that brings me into living dynamic fellowship with the holiest being in the universe God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit living in me you know that when the angels look on God and they cover their faces and they look on him and they cry Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts and they cry these words Holy and they cannot look and then I look at this that I am indwelt by the Holy God that the holiest of all has come to live in me and I have come to live in the holiest of all this is the great promise of the blood of Jesus and so he is our high priest this is what it says in verse 21 a high priest, these are all the benefits of the blood of Jesus we have a high priest, we have a minister to minister these things to us now, I don't know if you've ever seen people wanting this minister they run to this minister and they run to that minister you know that even in the catholic tradition people go to the priest to get their blessing and they go there and I I was in the catholic church just visiting not worshipping I was visiting in the catholic church in Valencia in Spain and I walked through and was shown I am supposed to admire these things I don't know all these icons and various things there I saw a man kneeling at a confessional a young priest he was kneeling at a confessional behind this little door listening to him was the shape of a priest listening to him I could barely see and there he was a conjugal priest his face was distort he was pale and he'd come to this priest and this priest would listen to him and give him something to do that would atone for his sin and the priest would say to him as it was in the catholic tradition the priest would say to him go and say 10 Hail Mary's prayers and our fathers go and do this every day depending on how deep the sin was go and do it for 6 months without forgetting go and do it and then he would say will you bless me father will you bless me he wanted the father to bless him oh will you bless me looking to a man be my high priest bless me and the man might perhaps speak of blessing through a wooden door and I would latch on to it go away mumbling to our fathers that Hail Mary's and trying to go through the motions we have a high priest over the house of God just think you come to a man and you know the people do this they come I see them in charismatic meetings they come and they want to yield themselves to this man to pray for them you can see the reason they sort of faint and fall backwards is because they want they want that blessing to soak them over them with their distinctive love and then it will all flow over them that's what they want they want a blessing from a man they want a man to put his hands on them and a blessing to flow through his hands and come through and over and it's not surprising that those meetings draw thousands of people because people are hungry for a priest to put his hand on them and bless them they should pour over and be blessed and go into another world and find the father blessing them but we do have a high priest and his name is Jesus and as you come to him he will put his hands on your head he will speak the forgiveness of all your sins he will break the power of guilt in your heart he will break the power of evil habits in your brain, in your mind, in your soul in your spirit he will break dimensions of darkness that have nagged you and pursued you all your life he'll break them he'll give you the blessing of his own power, of his own blood shed for you and he'll pour the anointing over your head your body, your life he will do it he will transform your life inside, right through in a moment he won't say do this for six months and then you'll get it he'll say in a moment you can have it by the grace of Christ and then he will say and now I take you as my brother and I lead you to my father I am the way to father he says, come on he says I'm the way to father come right in no, no, no, don't hang up he says come on in I can't pray, I'm not used to praying no, no, it doesn't matter about that we're not talking about habits like that we're talking about spiritual reality we're talking about something that will so change your personality so change you you'll forget about trying to pray you'll discover God you know there's the thing about this the power of the blood of Jesus is that it so reconciles you with God God living in you God filling you God changing you that you become overwhelmed with the wonder of the sense of God within you new birth so powerful so real so life transforming that a man cannot believe it's happening to him you know I discovered that it's possible to reduce these promises down to some kind of thing whereby you think well is that all that Jesus died for? that I might just sort of say well I'm saved now or is it that Jesus died died to bring me out of the power of darkness and sin and introduce me to the kingdom of light in a moment of time that I should be amazed at what God has done in me the entrance into this dimension begins the life of worship that a man should be amazed at God unable to stop himself I don't believe that a new born child of God prays through the power of discipline a new born child of God prays because he can't stop I'm not saying that we don't ever need discipline God knows we need that but a man does not learn prayer by the power of discipline he learns power through the blood of Christ flooding and changing he's drawn, he wants to be there this great urge to be in the presence of God this great urge to know more of the wonder the delight to have him come there the wonder, the reality of it this is the motivation to find the place of prayer and keep it the discipline comes to our hearts because we want to go deeper and there may be days of temptation when the way seems blocked but the power of the blood of Jesus Christ introduces me powerfully into the things of God and that is why this chapter 10 of Hebrews is living coals you know that Isaiah saw and the living coals were brought and they touched his lips this chapter 10 of Hebrews is living coals from the presence of God and they have touched your lips and touched your heart and so burrowed into your soul until they transformed you they are so great the promises of this chapter so great are the promises of this chapter that you almost ignore them no matter how much I believe them there is still more in them for you to discover and that is true when we enter into them we realize that we have only begun to know the power of these things and the fullness is still lying ahead of us the blood of Jesus Christ this is our subject they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb but we haven't got his consequences yet but the thing is this that they're the ground why do we gather why do we not neglect purpose our meetings why, because why is the church filled with the urge to meet why is there the urge to pray why is the exhortation in the meetings why is the profession of our faith that we keep holding why are these things why do we look at one another to consider one another because of the blood of Jesus because we live conscious of this central reality that transforms everything for us that Jesus died and is standing at the right hand of the Majesty on high for us let us pray and believe not just praying we are believing the promises of God now believe them they are true believe the promises of God you have sins that have plagued you maybe happened a long time ago and you're condemned by them maybe they happened recently and you're condemned and you're hindered and they're like chains around your ankles to stop you moving of course they will be sin chains you down the blood of Jesus Christ dissolves even the iron of those chains and they're gone from your feet and from your body and from your mind in a moment of time now believe Him believe the Son of God thank Him for making this way for you Jesus I thank you Jesus I stand in your presence now conscious of you aware of you by the Spirit of God in fellowship with you and I praise you Jesus that your blood speaks louder clearer better the best voice in all eternity is the voice of the blood of Jesus I praise you Jesus I pray you'll make that voice heard in every heart here that believes and grant each one the joy the wonder the power of entrance in to the Holy Store thank you Jesus
