Stephen Kaung (1915 - 2022). Chinese-American Bible teacher, author, and translator born in Ningbo, China. Raised in a Methodist family with a minister father, he converted to Christianity at 15 in 1930, driven by a deep awareness of sin. Sermon Summary
In this sermon, the preacher discusses the story of Balak and Balaam from the book of Numbers. Balak, the king of Moab, wanted to curse God's people but was unable to do so because God only allowed blessings. However, Balaam advised Balak to lead the Israelites into idol worship, as this would lead to their downfall. The preacher then goes on to discuss how the church today is compromised and united with the world, catering to worldly methods to attract people. He warns against the teachings of Nicolaitans and clergy who control spiritual matters, emphasizing the need for faithfulness to God above all else.

They acknowledge that the name of the Lord is their name. And it is enough to have the name of the Lord. They call themselves Christians. They belong to Christ. Although people call them many nicknames. But they say we are nothing but Christians. We surrender unto the name of Lord Jesus Christ. And we are following Christ. Christ is our life. Christ is all to me. Do you know where this word Christian comes from? If you read the book of Acts, these disciples of the Lord at the time, these, those who believe in Lord Jesus, and the people in the world did not know how to describe them. Some say people of the way. Because they are walking on this way. People don't know how to call them. And the disciples are called Christians. It started in Antioch. They did not call the name themselves. At that time, to be called a Christian, that was just a nickname. With despise. You, the group of people, are the people who are obsessed with Christ. And you open your mouth with Christ, close your mouth with Christ. You live for Christ. All things for Christ. All are Christ. And besides Christ, nothing else. You are the people called Christians. You are brothers and sisters. They kept the name of the Lord. For this reason, they are against all things. Whatever is not of the Lord, whatever is not of the church, they are against them. For this reason, they are martyrs. You know the word martyr and the word testimony, a witness. In the original language are one word. If you want to be a faithful witness for the Lord, either you are a martyr to death or you are a martyr in a life. You shall be faithful unto death. Dear brothers and sisters, we see the condition and the changes in the church. In the church at Pergamon, someone has gone with the teaching of Balaam. What is the teaching of Balaam? If you read the book of Numbers, when God's people were brought to the edge of Canaan, in the land of Moab, and they are on the east side of Jordan, the Moab, and they were ready to go into Canaan. The king of Moab, by the name of Balaam, and he was nervous. He invited a Gentile prophet by the name of Balaam by the name of Balaam and asked him to curse God's people. And because Balaam likes money, although the Lord forbid him from going, he still asked the Lord to go. And the Lord said, you go. But be careful when you speak. So when he was about to prophesy, and once again and four times, he could only bless God's people. He could not curse them. So finally he did not get the money. But he knew the way of God. So he told Balaam, there is only one way you can defeat these people. Tell them to worship the idol. And let them be married with the Moab women. Let them eat the things sacrificed to idols. Because he knows that God is holy. God is righteous. When God's people are not holy and not righteous, then God has to judge them. So you see here, Balaam has sold out the truth of God for his own benefit. And Israelites were actually obsessed. And 20,000 people died. Dear brothers and sisters, this is the doctrine of Balaam. Balaam, for his own benefit, he brought in this doctrine to be united with the world. You do not have to separate yourself. Why do you have to be this kind of man? Not only if you compromise, then you will not have persecution. And then you are welcome. Isn't that good? Dear brothers and sisters, today when we look at the condition of the world, it has been obedient to the doctrine of Balaam. The world has entered the church. Our brother Watchman Lee said, when a boat is on the surface of the water, but when the water enters the boat, the boat will sink. When the church is like on a big ocean, if the water enters into the church, the church sinks. Dear brothers and sisters, this is the condition of the church today. The truth of God was compromised. It was united with the world. And by the method of the world, attract men to the church. And to govern the church is like to manage a big corporation. We see that this is to cater to the doctrine of Balaam. If you are on Antipas, you cannot but against all these things. Not only that. Some of them obeyed the teaching of Nicolaitans. In the letter to the church at Ephesus, there was only the worst of the Nicolaitans. There are only a few who have this worst. But the worst does not turn into a lesson. You know, when the worst becomes a beast, becomes a doctrine, the doctrine would rule all things. But here, it becomes a doctrine. And there is the system of laity and clergy. And some are clergy. And they took control of all things. But the worst does not turn into a doctrine. You know, when the worst becomes a beast, becomes a doctrine, the doctrine would rule all things. But here, it becomes a doctrine. And there is the system of laity and clergy. And some are clergy, and they took control of all spiritual things. All other people are laymen, and you just come to me. You just come to listen. You just put your money in the bank. The less opinion you have, the better off you are. And the better is you just come, but you don't really want to come. And do not get deep. If you get deep, you're having trouble. You don't understand. And we have some experts here. Let them manage the spiritual things. And this becomes a doctrine. And this doctrine prevails in the Christian world. Dear brothers and sisters, Lord is there. You repent. The Lord is the one that has the two-edged sword from his mouth. The Lord is going to use the word of his mouth to pierce and to separate. To separate soul from spirit. What is of him, what is of man. What is of him, and what is of this world. What is himself, what is not. Whatever is not him, has to be taken away. Whatever is of him, has to be accepted. The Lord is in these two churches. What is he looking for? He looks for those who are faithful unto death. And faithful unto death to him. Not to be faithful unto death to other things. Because he is the Lord who is faithful unto death. Our Lord is faithful to his Godfather unto death. His name is faithful. When you read the revelation, you know that faithful is his name. Today the name of us, the Christians, should be faithful. We should be faithful to our Lord. Dear brothers and sisters, Today what you should separate away, do not unite with them. Today what you should be united with, you separate from. We see that we have deviated from the right path. So the Lord today is looking for himself in his church. He is looking for those who can be faithful unto death. We hope that the Lord will have mercy on us. There are many things we should repent. Because many things are not of the Lord. They are the things outside of the Lord. We are faithful to the wrong things. Let us repent and be faithful to our Lord. Then we have the testimony of the church. Let us bow down and pray. Our Lord, we fall down before you. We ask you to shine upon us with your light. We pray that you pierce our heart and separate us with the two edges of sword in your mouth. Whatever is not of you in us, we ask that you take away from us. Lord, you shed light on us. We acknowledge that we thought we were faithful in the past. But what we were faithful was toward man, toward thing, toward thing. We were not faithful to you. Lord, forgive us. We ask that you open our eyes. Open our ears. So that we can understand in our heart. Only you are worthy of us being faithful. And only you we can be faithful unto death too. Because you are so faithful to the Father unto death. Lord, we want to be faithful to you throughout our life. We acknowledge that by ourselves we cannot. But we know whom we believe. And we also know that you can keep what we have entrusted to you until that day. In the name of Lord Jesus. Amen.
