Arthur Vess

Arthur Vess, born circa 1895, died circa 1970, was an American preacher and author whose ministry within the Holiness movement emphasized sanctification, holy living, and bold scriptural preaching during the mid-20th century. Likely born in the rural South—possibly Tennessee or a neighboring state, given the Holiness movement’s strong foothold there—Vess emerged as a voice for uncompromising faith, though precise details of his early life, such as exact birth date and family background, remain elusive due to limited documentation. His work suggests a modest upbringing, steeped in evangelical Christianity, leading him to a calling as an itinerant preacher and writer focused on equipping believers and ministers alike. Vess’ ministry centered on delivering practical, no-nonsense sermons and writings, many preserved through platforms like RaptureReady.com and oChristian.com, including titles such as How To Preach And Teach Holiness and Youth’s Three Great Choices. He pastored and preached across Holiness churches, advocating for a life of prayer, discipline, and separation from worldly compromise—themes evident in his exhortations to preachers to “live what they preach” and maintain “secret contact with God” for effective ministry. His booklets, like The Bible on the Tongues Doctrine, tackled contentious issues within Pentecostalism, reflecting his engagement with theological debates of his era.

Sermon Summary
Arthur Vess emphasizes the importance of seeking a second definite work of grace, stressing the instantaneous blessing that comes with it. He highlights the need for eradication and death to the old sinful nature, emphasizing the crucifixion of the old man to live a life free from sin. Vess underscores the necessity of meeting God's conditions for Him to meet our needs, pointing out that faith is essential for purification and sanctification. He encourages using clear and specific Scriptural terms like 'sanctification,' 'Holy Ghost,' 'eradication,' 'carnality,' 'second blessing,' and 'perfect love' to help believers understand and receive this transformative experience.
Preach It Definitely and Specifically
Preach it definitely and specifically as a second definite work of grace, no more and noless. "Press the instantaneous blessing." Offer the experience on Bible terms and conditions. Stresseradication and death to the old man, and old woman too -- "knowing this that our old man iscrucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth (from now on) weshould not serve sin, for he that is dead (to sin) is freed from sin. We must meet the conditions, before God can meet our need. "Their hearts were purified by faith." There are two reasons whywe must trust God to save and to sanctify us. Namely: First, because we cannot do it for ourselves;second, because God can and will do it for us. Faith is the switch which ties us on to God's greatpower house, storehouse and light house. Call it by its clearest Scriptural names, so that the devil will recognize it and fight it, andso honest, hungry souls will recognize it and get it. Use definite terms, such as "sanctification,""Holy Ghost," "eradication," "carnality," "second blessing," "perfect love," etc.
