Bakht Singh

Bakht Singh Chabra (1903 - 2000). Indian evangelist, church planter, and Bible teacher born in Joiya, Punjab (now Pakistan), to a devout Sikh family. Educated at Punjab University, he studied agricultural engineering in England (1926-1928) and Canada (1929-1932), embracing a Western lifestyle, including smoking and drinking, while rejecting his Sikh roots by shaving his hair. Initially hostile to Christianity—once tearing a Bible apart—he converted in 1929 in Winnipeg after reading the New Testament, influenced by Christian friends John and Edith Hayward. Returning to India in 1933, he began preaching as an Anglican evangelist, later becoming independent, sparking the 1937 Martinpur revival, a pivotal movement in Indian Christianity. In 1941, after a night of prayer in Chennai, he founded Hebron Ministries, establishing over 10,000 indigenous churches modeled on New Testament principles across India and South Asia. Singh authored books like How I Got Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory and held annual “Holy Convocations” in Madras, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kalimpong, drawing thousands. Married to Rama Bai at age 12 in 1915, little is recorded of their personal life. His contextualized gospel, blending Indian spirituality with biblical truth, earned him the title “Elijah of the 21st Century” in Indian Christendom. Singh’s words, “I have never asked any man for anything, but the Lord is richly supplying all my needs,” reflect his faith-driven ministry. Despite Parkinson’s disease in his final decade, his legacy endures through Hebron’s global network and writings, praised by figures like Ravi Zacharias.

Sermon Transcription
The following message has been recorded at Jagavaswama, South India Method, at the special Thanksgiving meeting for Silver Jubilee. The message has been released by God's servant, Brother Buck Singh, on 8th morning, July 1966. This message, translated into Tamil by Lord's servant, Brother Morris Don, and in Telugu by Brother Sona Rao of Guntur. ...and a steward for all the substance and possession of the king and of his sons, the Javishers, the mighty men and all the valiant men of Jerusalem. By God's servant to me, thou shalt not build a house for my name, for thou hast been a man of war and hast shed blood. And of all my sons, for the Lord has given me many sons, He has chosen Solomon, my son, to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the Lord of Israel. Moreover, I will establish his kingdom forever, if he be constant to my commandments and my judgments as at this day. And thou, Solomon, my son, know thou the God of thy father. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, our loving Savior, we seek thy face again and again, being conscious of our emptiness, unworthiness and helplessness. By which only the Lord thy fullness, and we can claim our share in that fullness. And thou, give us something of thy fullness to enjoy thy favor. Thank thee for the honor given to us to take some share in the building of thy house, and attain thy fullness forever. Now can you see 1st and 28th chapter From the verse 9 Thou Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father Serve him with a perfect heart and a willing mind For the Lord searches all hearts Understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts If thou seek him, he will be fond of thee Thou Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father Serve him with a perfect heart and a willing mind For the Lord searches all hearts Understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts If thou seek him, he will be fond of thee If thou forsake him, he will forsake thee Thou Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father For the Lord searches all hearts Understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts If thou seek him, he will be fond of thee Serve him with a perfect heart and a willing mind For the Lord searches all hearts Understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts If thou forsake him, he will be fond of thee Thus we want to take any share In the building of God's sanctuary Receive this verse in view Thus we want to take any share In the building of God's sanctuary Receive this verse in view If you want to take any share In the building of God's sanctuary Receive this verse in view For the Lord searches all hearts Understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts If thou seek him, he will be fond of thee If thou forsake him, he will forsake thee The experience of the living God Which David had with him The meaning of that is David had a close relationship with God In the same way Solomon had to be David had the experience of God Solomon also had the same experience All that God had revealed and shown and taught to David Through many trials, suffering experiences Now is being imparted to Solomon by David Through many trials, suffering experiences Now is being imparted to Solomon by David In the same way David had a close relationship with God Unless we have that intimate personal experience The living God None of us can take any share In the building of the house of God There is no lack of Bab and Noah these days There are many good books available There are many good teachers available There are many good scholars available In many parts of the world But we don't come across many persons Who have a really intimate walk with God And we see clearly from this passage over here Without that personal intimate experience The living God himself He can't understand God's will, God's way, God's purpose, God's plan He can't understand God's will, God's way, God's plan Then he was told in the very same verse And serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind In the same verse it is said Serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind Serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind Without any reservation If we don't have any reservation We find always with a reservation in our heart And we serve God When we serve God There seems to be some motive behind us When we do something for God When we do something for God We expect some reward of some kind Because we are doing something for God When we do something for God We expect some reward of some kind Because we are doing something for God And that's why some of us get very much offended with God When our prayers are not fully answered And our requests are not granted We must say well I have been serving God all these years And giving him my tithe regularly Taking a part in opening everything Why should God allow in my house or my family That's the trouble I have been serving God all these years And giving him my tithe regularly Taking a part in opening everything Why should God allow in my house or my family That's the trouble So we go and strike with God I am not going to pray very much anymore I am not going to pray very much anymore I will go to meeting but won't take much part I will go to prayer meeting but won't pray I will go to breaking of belt but won't take much part I will give him my tithe but without any shining face I will give him my tithe but without any shining face So we have that mixed motive in our service If others don't appreciate what we do We don't do what we do Now we find all our services have some mixed inside God said to Solomon to David Serve him with a perfect heart So God said to Solomon to David Serve him with a perfect heart So God said to Solomon to David Serve him with a perfect heart Serve him with a perfect heart Not by pressure, not by force You require some push to go somewhere Nobody say roll the mat, you roll the mat Nobody say roll the mat, you roll the mat Walk upon the same mat for the rest of the time Walk upon the same mat for the rest of the time Don't worry about it She did much, much, much more joy in serving him with a willing mind. Everything without any pressure. And we find that when we do such a service, God is more pleased. A lot such as the hearts, all hearts understand the imagination of the thoughts. No need to hide your thoughts and your imagination from God. It is good to confess everything before Him and claim victory. Without cheating Him, He will be proud of you. Now go to Him with that faith and conviction. Seek Him with all your heart. For fellowship, for communion, for understanding, for everything. And that's how we can see how God prepares His vessels, His co-workers to build His sanctuary. Now David was saying all that because he had gone through all these experiences himself. But he went through himself many, many bitter experiences before he learnt the lesson. In the beginning, we are deceived by our own human zeal for God. That's why we make many mistakes. We might be sincere, we might be very hardworking, very diligent. Make many sacrifices, yet it's possible to make many mistakes and do things against the will of God. Have you seen the first chronicle of the book 13? This is possible for you. This is possible for you. First chronicle, chapter 13, and David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds and with every leader. And he asked to bring again the Ark of God to us for we inquired not at it in the days of Saul. So David gathered all his people together from Sheol of Egypt, even unto the entering of Hemos, to bring the Ark of God from Kirgiz Yarin. And they carried the Ark of God, a new cart, out of the house of Abinadab, and Uzah, and Ahio, they the cart. And when they came unto the threshing floor of Sidon, Uzah put forth a hand to hold the Ark, for the oxen stumbled. And David was displeased, because the Lord had made a breach upon Uzah. Therefore the place is called Erez Uzah Ludeh. So David brought not the Ark unto himself, the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. Now what a great zeal is being shown by David at this time. And everybody in the whole kingdom was admiring his zeal for God and the Ark of God. There were four verses. And all the congregation said, they would do so if the king was right in the eyes of all the people. All are fully in agreement with David. All the captains and the princes, leaders of the whole kingdom are one with him. And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds and with every leader. And David and all Israel played before the Lord their might, having singing in the harp, the saltine, the timbrel, the cymbals and trumpets. And David and all Israel played before the Lord their might, having singing in the harp, the saltine, the timbrel, the cymbals and trumpets. It must have been a wonderful sight that day. Now they were not singing any worldly song or playing any worldly music. They were singing songs and spiritual songs in all their might. They were singing songs and spiritual songs in all their might. Even the best singers get tired of their singing these days. The first two or three songs they can sing nicely. But of the four songs, you can see how they go down. Here you find all of them all put together. All singing together with all their might, singing and jostling. All singing together with all their might, singing and jostling. Where there were kings, where there were captains, all were singing. But these days, those in the front they sing loudly. But that day, they all sang with all their might. Now what is the deal? But everything will be done against the word of God. With all their humility and sincerity, they never knew they were giving the will of God. With all their humility and sincerity, they never knew they were giving the will of God. It is only when the wrath of God falls upon them on the way, then they shall discover. It is only when the wrath of God falls upon them on the way, then they shall discover. Like these some car drivers. They don't bother in the beginning to make sure that the car is alright. They don't bother in the beginning to make sure that the car is alright. After they have gone half the way, then the car stops. Now there is no petrol. Rather than making sure before they started, they wait till everything breaks down. That happened in India everywhere. Now we wait till everything goes wrong, then we begin to think. Slowly when the wrath of God fell upon Judah, they began to realize something was wrong. Now rather than obeying the word of God, they were trying to imitate the Philistines. Now rather than obeying the word of God, they were trying to imitate the Philistines. We know fully well how the ark of God was taken by Philistines in the days of Eli the high priest. We know fully well how the ark of God was taken by Philistines in the days of Eli the high priest. When the wrath of God fell upon the Philistines, they sent back the ark of God from their country. When the wrath of God fell upon the Philistines, they sent back the ark of God from their country. This is the first example now. And those tabernacles. Read it responsibly. Verse 1. And the ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months. And they said, if we send away the ark of the Lord, it shall be not empty. And they said, if we send away the ark of the Lord, it shall be not empty. But in any while return him a trespass offering, then he shall be healed. And it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you. of the land, shall give glory unto God with real fortitude, he will lighten the land upon you from your gods and from of your land. Now therefore make a new cot and take two mill coins on which there have been no yoke and tie the coin to the cot and bring their cogs home from them. And see if he will go up by the way of his own course to Banshee Mesh, then he has done us a great evil, but if not, then we shall know it, if not his hand does not move out, there is a chance it will happen to us. And they laid the ark of the Lord upon the ark and covered it with the mice of gold, images of the emerald. And they of the Banshee Mesh were eating their wheat harvest in the valley, lift up their eyes and saw the ark and they had to see it. And Levi took down the ark of the Lord and he covered it with various jewels of gold and put them on a clear stone and the men of Banshee Mesh offered one offering and sacrificed the same day on the Lord. And that is what they saw on that day. That is how the ark of God is being sent back by the first in a new cot. But don't think, Don, at the advice of the priest and the diviners of the Philistines. I don't remember how these milking cows, they brought on themselves. But don't think, Don, at the advice of the priest and the diviners of the Philistines. Because without the calf, the milking cows will not go anywhere. So where they all came back from, first they made a big impression on the minds of those Israelites. So where they all came back from, first they made a big impression on the minds of those Israelites. But in the book of Numbers, second chapter, God has shown them very clearly, how the ark of God was always to be carried on the shoulders of Levi's. But in the book of Numbers, second chapter, God has shown them very clearly, how the ark of God was always to be carried on the shoulders of Levi's. Only the Levites carried it on their shoulders. Only the Levites carried it on their shoulders. No one else should carry it on their shoulders. And that lesson, that message has been conveyed by the prophets, by the Levites all these centuries. And that lesson, that message has been conveyed by the prophets, by the Levites all these centuries. That is a very common argument today. That we are living in a new age. And thus people entirely ignore the laws of God, the ways of God and the way of God. Now their zeal and society, they are using so many worldly ways, worldly methods to draw people, to collect money for God's service and the work of God. to draw people, to collect money for God's service and the work of God. That's why half way they come across some failure, some tragedy or disappointment. That's why half way they come across some failure, some tragedy or disappointment. But we see how David repented in the 1st Chronicle chapter 16. But we see how David repented in the 1st Chronicle chapter 16. 1st Chronicle, now chapter 16. 1st Chronicle, now chapter 16. Read from the verse 1. And David made him houses in the city of David And David made him houses in the city of David And David gathered all Israel together, Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the Lord unto his place, which he had prepared for it. Are the sons of Quahad, Uriel the chief, and brethren, and a hundred and twenty. Are the sons of Gershom, Uriel the chief, and brethren, and a hundred and thirty. Are the sons of Hebron, Eliel the chief, and brethren, and a hundred and forty. And David called for Zadok, a nebbiage of the priests, and Levi, Uriel, Esaiah, Joel, Samaiah, Eliel, and many more. For because he did it not at the first, Lord our God made it be upon us. For that we sought him not after the due order. And children of the Levite, bear the ark of God upon their shoulder, and the staves thereon, as Moses commanded them, according to the word of the Lord. As we have been learned by the prophet David, we are being taught by the prophet Jesus, according to the word of God. Levi appointed him as the son of Joel, brethren, Esaiah the son of Berishiah the son of Meritah, brethren, Ethan, son of Ushiah. So these singers, Bhiman, Asaya, Itnan were appointed to sound with the symbol of the brass. And Mathithayam, and Eliphilayam, and Nityanayam, Nobelidham, and Jaiyar, as they are the harps on the Shiminaya textile. And Berikayam, and Elekinaya were the doorkeepers for the art. So David and the elders of Israel, and the captain of our thousand, went to bring up the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord, of the house of Israel with joy. And they were clothed with the robe of violence. And all the devis that wear the Ark, and the singers, and Chennai are the masters of the David also had upon him the Ark. Now here you find clearly, David obeying the word of God, and following the instructions given in the book of Numbers chapter 2, 4 and 7. He might have thought in the beginning, perhaps, by bringing other men, they would have a big impression, and big possession. But see all the details given to us, in the book of Numbers chapter 2, 4 and 7, David obeying the word of God, and following the instructions given in the book of Numbers chapter 2, 4 and 7, have a spiritual meaning. And God had not anything for that purpose. The name Levi means joined or united. So Levi's were commanded to pitch their tents around the Tabernacle. The Tabernacle spake of the presence of God among his people. And God was speaking through Levi's. All we sinners have been cut off from God, can we join to him. So unless we are spiritually joined to the God himself, his life will not flow into us. And thus we can see clearly, only those who are born again, they have the privilege to take share in the building house of God. And those who are not born again, God can't use them in his house. That was the first great message God had been conveying through Levi's. And you find God works suffer because they go on receiving money and help from ungodly people, thinking that it's only for God. There is no scoop for it, no matter who gives the money, as long as they give it, they take it. Rather they take pride, how much money they have collected and gathered, from different people, by different ways. In America there are companies, teach people how to collect money. Now those people are murliya and godly people, in the company. Now supposing they want to build anywhere, a very grand church building. Then the company will send their specialists, four or five people in the city. They make a bargain, that if we get you one lakh, you give us ten thousand, like that. Then those specialists will take their leading manhood to house to house. They will teach them how to begin a conversation, how to smile, what to say, what not to say. And they go that way. They find out all these different methods of getting money from people. And some people study, have specialists, going about it, whole year round, collecting money. Now supposing there is a very food shortage in India today. Then the letter from India. Oh, what a sad state India today. Oh, what a sad state India today. In Madras we saw so many people starving for food. But what they saw was only a few beggars at Central Station. They have been begging all these years. Like that you see they have got so many methods. Same way to draw people from the meeting. But not God's way. God only shows the clear to us, His way. Even everything for His glory. Now the Levis have been divided into different groups for different services. Now you have the details in chapter 15 now. Now you have the details in chapter 15 now. Then they will say, none ought to carry the Ark of God but the Levis. For them has the Lord chosen to carry the Ark of God and to minister unto forever. For them has the Lord chosen to carry the Ark of God and to minister unto forever. The Ark is a typology, a style. Those who are not born again, they can't carry Him, they can't lift Him, they can't exalt Him, they can't preach Him. Those who are not born again, they can't carry Him, they can't lift Him, they can't exalt Him, they can't preach Him. David, Aaron and all the sons of David were gathered together. Verse 12 I have prayed for him. Verse 13 Lord our God made a burden upon us. For that we sought Him not, of the reward. See now David made a confession. We sought Him not after that due order. Verse 13 Now he is requesting the Levis, another priest with them. Now you come forward and stand before yourself. Now he is requesting the Levis, another priest with them. Verse 14 The Levis sanctified themselves to bring up the Ark of God. Before they could touch any part of the Ark, they also had to sanctify themselves. They gave preparation. We have to be sanctified again, again, again, again. Take us here in the presence of God. Verse 15 And the children of Levi, bear the Ark of God upon their shoulder. As Moses commanded, call unto the Lord. And the children of Levi, bear the Ark of God upon their shoulder. And the children of Levi, bear the Ark of God upon their shoulder. Now they are making sure of God's word. See for example, Book of Numbers chapter 4. Verse 15 When Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, and the camp is to set forward, after that the sons of Coahep shall come to bear it. But they shall not touch any holy thing. These things are the burden of the sons of Coahep, the tabernacle of congregation. Verse 4 When Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and the camp is to set forward, after that the sons of Coahep shall come to bear it. But they shall not touch any holy thing. But they shall not touch any holy thing. But the sons of Coahep shall bear it. Verse 15 When Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and the camp is to set forward, after that the sons of Coahep shall come to bear it. But they shall not touch any holy thing. But the sons of Coahep shall bear it. But the sons of Coahep shall bear it. Verse 16 When Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and the camp is to set forward, after that the sons of Coahep shall bear it. But they shall not touch any holy thing. They brought the very skillful men who could play music to sing for them and play with them. Even though they may be smokers or drunkards, because of their good harmonium, they can use them. Even though they may be smokers or drunkards, because of their good harmonium, they can use them. It is very difficult to get Tabala players today. They are mostly drunkards and smokers. They are mostly drunkards and smokers. But they make the impression that they can do anything. But they make the impression that they can do anything. That is why Sri Gopalakrishnan came. That is why Sri Gopalakrishnan came. This sanctified material. Then with their joy, they brought the Ark with praise. Then with their joy, they brought the Ark with praise. Then we see clearly how we can take our share in the building of God's sanctuary. Then we see clearly how we can take our share in the building of God's sanctuary. Even though we are greedy and greedy, if we listen to the word of God, the work of God will start. Even though we are greedy and greedy, if we listen to the word of God, the work of God will start. Lord David on the threshing floor. The threshing floor when that happened. That is verse 9. And they came on to the threshing floor of Sidon Uzzah put forth a hand to hold the ark and the ark just tumbled. And the angel of the Lord was looking at Uzzah. And again, forty years later, again God brings David upon the threshing floor. That is 2 Samuel 24. When David wanted to number the people. He responsibly, Psalm verse 1 to 4. And again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel. And he moved David against them and said, Go number Israel and Judah. And Joab said unto the king. Now the people, Lord thy God, add unto thy people. How many soever they may be, a hundredfold. My lord the king may see. But why does my lord the king like this thing. Even though David knew fully well that God had given a victory over the enemy. Not because of any human strength, but his name. David knew fully well that God had given a victory over the enemy. That is 1 Samuel chapter 17 and verse 47. 1 Samuel chapter 17 and verse 47. All the assembly shall know, Lord saveth not his sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord's. And he will give you into your hands. 1 Samuel chapter 17 and verse 47. All the assembly shall know, Lord saveth not his sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord's. And he will give you into your hands. For the battle is the Lord's. All the assembly shall know, Lord saveth not his sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord's. And he will give you into your hands. Not because of his own strength. David knew fully well that God had given a victory over the enemy. Now in old age, he wants to be sure how many fighting men they have in their kingdom. So he told his general Joab, you go and number the people of that kind. And Joab said, why does my Lord want this? Even though you have hundred times so many men, they are not going to help you. To God who gave you victory. And the word of David prevailed. That's why God's anger again fell upon them. Verse 15, 2 Samuel 24, 15. So the Lord sent a pestilence material from the morning to the evening. And there died a people, Dan and Beersheba, seventy thousand men. Verse 16, When the angel stretched his hand upon Jerusalem, the Lord repented of evil and said to the angel, Enough, stay out of the hand. The angel of the Lord was by searching place on the Jebusite. When the angel stretched his hand upon Jerusalem, the Lord repented of evil and said to the angel, Enough, stay out of the hand. The angel of the Lord was by searching place on the Jebusite. My strength or my army or my men, only I am worthy. We are going to glory in our self, in our knowledge of the Bible or cleverness. One day we will be blood-possessed. So, we must come to the end of our self, our knowledge of the Bible or cleverness. We have to be clear, we are in God's perfect will, whether we are small or big servant. We have to find God's perfect plan in every small detail of personal life, family life, and social life. We have to find God's perfect plan in every small detail of personal life, family life, and social life. After David had been brought on the assessing floor, then God gave him the patron. Even though he was a mighty man of war, very wise man, good man, but God can't give the patron till he went through that experience. Even though he was a mighty man of war, very wise man, good man, but God can't give the patron till he went through that experience. Just by gathering separately, having picking up bed every Sunday, we can't build the church of God. Just by gathering separately, having picking up bed every Sunday, we can't build the church of God. We will receive from God hands, heavenly patron, everything. And we are willing to be free from every chaff, but we call wisdom, God calls chaff. And we are willing to be free from every chaff, but we call wisdom, God calls chaff. And many of us have to wait for many, many years before we begin to see the real meaning of God's plan. You will see more about later on. You will see more about later on. Our loving Heavenly Father, In the name of the Lord Jesus, our Savior, thank Thee for Thy Word. Thank Thee for the privilege being given to us as fellow believers, to take some share in the abiding dark of this power place. And that's why we have to be brought by the, not only two, but many in such a floor, till we are free completely of human chaff. We are sure to abide in divine order. Lord have mercy upon us. Make us willing to wait patiently till Thy plan is perfectly clear, visually, as a family and collectively as a church. Thank Thee for the abundant grace available to forgive us and cover us. Lord, forgive the whole day. And hold us in heavenly plan the whole day in the many periods. Lord, you have to go, be led of Thee. All of us be kept in touch with Thy throne. We pray in the name of the Lord, Joseph. We pray in the name of the Lord, Joseph. Now unto Him, able to keep us from falling, and present us in the presence of His glory, receiving joy, to the only begotten of our Saviour. The Lord give you glory, power, both now and evermore.
