A Message on Hell
Rolfe Barnard

Rolfe P. Barnard (1904 - 1969). American Southern Baptist evangelist and Calvinist preacher born in Guntersville, Alabama. Raised in a Christian home, he rebelled, embracing atheism at 15 while at the University of Texas, leading an atheists’ club mocking the Bible. Converted in 1928 after teaching in Borger, Texas, where a church pressured him to preach, he surrendered to ministry. From the 1930s to 1960s, he traveled across the U.S. and Canada, preaching sovereign grace and repentance, often sparking revivals or controversy. Barnard delivered thousands of sermons, many at Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky, emphasizing God’s holiness and human depravity. He authored no major books but recorded hundreds of messages, preserved by Chapel Library. Married with at least one daughter, he lived modestly, focusing on itinerant evangelism. His bold style, rejecting “easy-believism,” influenced figures like Bruce Gerencser and shaped 20th-century Reformed Baptist thought.

I wish to speak tonight after the message last night when we spoke on seeking the Lord. Seeking the Lord. I believe with all of my heart that if a man will accept, in the Bible meaning of that term, which means to receive and surrender, the Lord Jesus Christ, he'll be saved. But I believe we have to accept Him as He is and where He is. And we don't think you can wear Him down. You've got to bow to Him and surrender of what He is and where He is. And He's on the throne. And if you do not love Him sitting on the throne, when He comes, He's going to send you to hell. That's the message tonight. Claims of this one Saturday night with the main... God just got one issue with me on Wednesday. This is my son. This is the son of my love. Here he is. That's the only issue between God and man now. That a man will listen to the Lord Jesus Christ. In former days, God spoke unto the fathers and the prophets. But in these last days, He has spoken in the Son. He has many other words. If you do not listen to His Son, there's no way for you. There's but one issue. The Lord Jesus Christ. And last night we talked about seeking the Lord. Not bargaining with Him. Not trying to swap with Him. Not seeking what He has for you. But seeking Him. He's the pearl of great price. You have to serve Him as God. Potentially. Potentially. You have to die. You have to give everything you've got. Potentially. I mean it. If you find that great pearl. Tonight. The message that God uses. To induce some. To seek. The Lord. Until they are found again. God's never found a way. I suppose. I'll shut up this world for a peace time. And according to the Gospels, He's never found the message yet. By the use of His Spirit. He can induce all men. To become persistent. Humble seekers of the Son. Up to now. He's never been able to induce all men. From a knowledge. In every generation. And there's no promise. Until the last good eye. Which is on the way. By what they got in the day. Thank God. There's coming a day when the knowledge of the Lord shall cover the earth. As the waters cover the sea. When the seven men will catch hold. And ask for information how to get to the Lord. That's coming. The great day is yet to come. But the Lord. Has one message. That He is able. Himself. To become seekers of the Lord. Remember He becomes a persistent seeker. He'll be found. In Matthew chapter ten. Verse twenty. We're not asked for the message. For as we do not apologize. The message of all messages. That God Almighty. That Jesus went back to the world. Has been pleased to use. More than everything else in the Bible. To induce some. To become seekers of the Lord. And the text speaks after this. Why? Because fear. Not fear. Has killed the body. But we're not able to kill the soul. But rather fear Him. Which is able to destroy. Both soul. And body. In hell. You may want to listen to that. The Lord said. But not be so much afraid of a man. Who can kill your body. But rather fear Him. Who is able. To destroy. Not the mire. The bread. To destroy. Both soul and body. In hell. Fear Him. Verse twenty. The reason used to appeal. One was the fear of hell. And the other was the purpose. And I wish to speak tonight on that message. What is the message that's calculated. To induce some people to seek Christ. The Bible mentions. A man who killed the world. The Bible mentions. The Bible mentions. The blindness of iniquity. The Bible mentions. The joy of the saints. But always. And especially. In this. Religious. Hardened age. When everybody's gone to church. And made some sort of profession. But where. The crime rate grows up every day. Always. And especially. In this. Religious. Generation. We do not know. The power. Of godliness. The one. And the best. Message that God. Has always used. To induce. Some people. To seek. The interest. In the blood of Christ. Is there are. Portions. Of the horrors. Of hell. Now. I know. That I cannot. Hell. Scare. Any man. Into seeing. The glory. Of God. In the face. Of Christ. I know. That I cannot. Hell. Scare. Any man. In the horror. Of faith. By stark. Terror. But I also know. That in the terror. Of souls. Some men. Can be induced. To seek. The redeeming. Faith. Of the feet. And the hand. Of the Lord. Jesus. By law. The severity. Of God's. Holy law. Where sin. Has taken. This life. Means. God will. Destroy. You. Utterly. Ruin. Both. Your body. And soul. Where it is. In hell. In hell. In hell. Now there's nothing on earth. To keep the sinner. From seeking the Lord. There's something. The sinner can't do. He cannot give himself. A new heart. He does not have the ability. To believe in the Lord. Jesus Christ. Nobody. But a fool. Or a person. Born again. Could possibly. Talk about it. born since no such thing happened? Well, it can't possibly happen. The natural mind can't accept that. Anybody got any sense of miracles if God wouldn't be born in a cow stable? Anybody got any sense of miracles if God wouldn't come to this earth and live and despise Nazareth, which no good thing ever came? Anybody got any sense of miracles if God wouldn't allow himself to be hung on a cursed tree outside the city of Jerusalem? Who would do it? See, the natural mind perceives a lot of things in the spirit, and if it can, then the spirit will deserve it. You don't—you've got to be born of a spirit in order to be able to live on Jesus Christ in that life. There's no difference in the time there. It doesn't happen you're born of a spirit and you're able to live on Christ at the same time. But when it's delivered, it's a sign that this is true. And repentance and faith in a new birth can be known with God's results. And His results are a life of repentance to a God. There's nothing on earth to keep men from seeking the Lord except the fact they feel no need of it. Men feel the need of money. They drive themselves to premature graves together. They feel the need of giving one to the other. And we'll stomp on everything that gets in our way in order to achieve it. But men feel no need of it. On the river of God's grace, arresting you, crossing your path, letting you go sincerely. But the truth is, there is a place where they have peace and a measure of satisfaction and have no part of need. God always needs the sinner's part of need. And those sinners do not realize that they need the Lord Jesus Christ. It's already been that way. In Acts chapter 2, verse 13, there is a description by God that the Lord prophets to good work His people just as I was nation in the year 1913. The word of the Spirit says for my people, understand my people as I've been saved people, as the elect covenant nation of the Jews. I think we touched on that last night. That does not mean that God's people, God's saved people have done this. It means God's elect nation wants to prove that the Lord's saved is the Lord. If my people, my people have been robbed, they've committed two evils. This sounds like me to you, but they have committed two evils, they've forsaken me. They've fallen after God. That's true of 97% of my church members. They've made some sort of confession. They were honest and sincere. They've shown me their names are still on the river and they show up every once in a while. My people have committed two evils. They've forsaken me, says God, the fountain of living water. And that's bad enough. But the second evil they've committed cuts the climax in addition to forgiving God and forsaking Him. They view our systems, their broken systems, says the Spirit, but people don't think so. And they've been holed up and they break from the systems they do not accept and it satisfies them. This is the self-satisfied age in the church now. Everybody's been on fire and tainted. No need to seek the Lord. We view the tower, systems, we embrace the dark system. There is living water with the Spirit. But the house of peace makes them deny they're really about my system. I had the house of peace, so I became a man of God. I died for God. I found a lot of satisfaction and peace and rest in calling the seven names of God and seeing there wasn't any God and not being there at night. The wonder of God just opened me out and filled me with meaning. My old broken system wouldn't satisfy me longer. I began to hunger for Him. You know, just in the days, they had access to the book and of course they were in the church. They had access to the gospel. They were in the house of systems. And they drank water out of their own systems. And they were just like people I hope you try to witness to today. Jesus Christ. They've got the wisdom of the longest time. They're drinking out of their own systems. So they're not rushing to God. In the New Testament, in the book of John, gospel of chapter 5, verse 79, we read these cryptic words. Ye are constantly, John 5, verse 79, the Lord Jesus talking to the Jewish leaders who later had to perform the first miracles of all His mighty works of deeds. And He said to them, ye are constantly. He didn't beg them to search the scriptures. He said, that's all you do. You're constantly searching the scriptures. And the reason you're a great library of students, these students of ours, we're constantly searching the scriptures. And how Bill Myers as a doctorate says that, you're constantly searching the scriptures. And the reason you're constantly searching the scriptures is for even really, you think you have eternal life. You see a lot of Baptists going to hell trusting the doctrine. And lots of Baptists going to hell because they found out that they didn't die for it. And these guys were teachers, scribes and Pharisees and believers. He said, you're constantly searching the scriptures for even real. He said, you have eternal life. So they had peace. They had peace. They were in the scriptures. They served. They were Bible students. And they found their peace and their satisfaction, their joy in their Bible study. But he said, the scriptures you're constantly searching. And you think that you're dead in the scriptures you have eternal life. He says, all they're good for is to testify. So eternal life's not in the scriptures. It's in the one the scripture's talking about. And he said, that's me. And the next verse says, because you're so satisfied with your Bible study, you're constantly searching out the scriptures and you think that fixed it all up. And you're perfectly satisfied. The next verse says it again. You desire now to disobey that you have life. You think you've already got life because you've searched the scriptures before. But there is life inside to testify me. And you want all life to be me. If you don't, you're dead. If you want great satisfaction in life, I wish you again with a modern eye. I'm not trying to break you to come with God. No, I wish you again. Are you satisfied and have perfect rest, but when you look really close on an enthroned Christ, where is your satisfaction? That is if it fits the same instinct that it did in sin on the way down the day. Is it Christ? Is it Him? What is it? What is it? Oh, there's nothing to keep me from seeking the Lord. Except most often one feeling of need and the reason to feel the need. Oh, you're satisfied. The scriptures say there's pleasure in sin, doesn't there? For there's sin. And there are God's many. And they'll stand in mid-stir till the day of trouble comes. And then they'll vanish away. Then the Christ that is closer than your brother is Him. But you're beginning to seek. Hell is the message that God uses to induce men and women to leave their broken systems of wherever we are. And there is a system of living whatever where Jesus came. And I would be for now to bring you the threefold message of hell. You see three things when you study what the Bible says about hell. First, hell reveals the character and nature of Almighty God. Hell reveals a God whose indignation shall flame against sin throughout and on and on and on. Hell reveals the fact that every jot and tittle of God's holy law, every jot shall be dotted, and every tittle shall be jotted, and every jot shall be lined. Everything about the law will be carried out in its full capacity when God brings judgment on men and women. Hell says that God hath eyes so dark that he cannot look on sin, nor the good and the quickly. Hell gives the life of the damned of the lives because all our lives that God hates the sin and loves the sinner, but that is not so because you can't separate the sin from the one who commits it. God does not look with complacent love on man when he brings the smoke of his unbelief at the crossroads of a woman like God. God loves such a man enough to fear him! God loves such a man enough to desire his salvation for God frankly desires the salvation of all men. He hath decreed the salvation of all men. He desires that all men be saved, but that he may have no one to save him in the temple. Hell says that God is holy, Christ holy. Hell says that God will send you to hell before he'll send you without his holy law being perfectly satisfied. Hell says that God will punish sin. Hell says that God will punish all sin. The halls of hell, where men roam eternally, nothing written on the walls except damnation, forever, salvation, never. Hell, the end of all hell. God's concentration camp. Let it be! You've accepted God. You've accepted that God who unless he can save you will destroy you, or sooner or later. This generation in the name of our holy Lord God, the way the professing Christians now act on the Lord's Day shows that this generation of church members don't know or see what God says about the blood of the body. It's a shame the way they practice make that Sunday, the Lord's Day, a holiday in their very last weekend, and remember them like straight to hell. Not because they break the Sabbath, but because they do not love the Lord's Sabbath. Because of the Lord, he did keep his commandments and his ways. And the principle of the Lord's Day is as old as God's law. And the way they play games, where they put their shoes and visit their grandmothers. And God's already now bringing this generation of people, men and women, who need to look in the Bible and look the message of hell steeped down deep below. Hell gives us a revelation of the homeward nature and character of the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ. I've even met people who look me in the face and say, Poacher, I'm a Christian. And they take part of God's time. And buy all the mobiles and the phones and everything. Now the Bible doesn't teach that a Christian bought the time. The Bible teaches that the time is hope. And I don't care who you are, if you touch a dime of God's time, you're a crook and you're going to hell. You don't live without salvation. Even salvation doesn't make you delight in the law of God. And you're going to die. They've been telling me ever since I've been a preacher that the trouble with baptism is just needing instruction is the need to get out of baptism. They're tired of what they need. They just need to fall in love with the one who saves the time. You're a crook if you take God's money in your life. God don't loan you God's money. No. You say, well, I'm not a Christian. I know. You're a crook. You're a sinner. Where's the first ten dollars I ever earned that passes through your pocketbook? God says that's mine. That's what I'm saying to them. It's your God. And you need to tell it off finally. You've been conquered by the grace of God. And then Paul admitted that he was a murderer of Christ. He said, if you love me, you'll keep my commandments. And if you don't love me, when he comes, he's going to curse you and send you to hell just tomorrow night. It's time for us to buy survival. We don't feel we're teaching one to die. These great principles have been there all our lives. And they're so if they damn my soul to hell that is the night when for God to save me without failing is the spirit of the law is to send them. And to save me without putting in them a desire to do the will of God which is expressed in the law of God. The message of hell remains to this generation. The character, the wholeness of nature, the God of the ages. There's a second message of hell. Hell paints a perfect picture of the character of man, Ralph Barnum and all the group. But in that picture, Ralph Barnum is truthless. His eye had looked in the sight of God quite surreal as it tells him Paul will be turned away. Hell says three things about man. There is a reference in the Bible which invades us which tells in how the hell reveals that man has a satanic satanic spirit whom Satan put on the flesh for pleasure by encouraging men to put their will against the will of God. God says don't you dream of that dream. So he's in a mound where I believe talked to Andrew saying I will not mind God. Satan is pictured in the book of Isaiah saying I will. I will send the nurse home. I will. I will. I will. I will. Let man be claimed to be saved whose will has not been broken to the will of the king in your life. This claims to be saved. Friday night and Saturday night you go to bed. If God is your savior, you bow down and say Lord I'm the boss from now on. I'm going to give you direction. In the name of salvation, a satanic spirit I will. The hell of God. The hell of the person. The hell of the human being. I will. I will. I will. I will. I will. God says the second thing man has a satanic fury. In the book of Romans they told the natural man, the kind of man when they were serving him, he was angry with his hostility. They say he's a hot bed of hostility. The kind of man is not subject to an unsaved man. There's a church member in Iowa keep the Sabbath day here in this furio, you unmerciful animal. He's not going to bow to God's command. Tell an unsaved man in the church in Iowa to try this fury. He says he's crazy. He says he's crazy. When to get down, what to bow, what season to what season brings the Jewish stranger to the race of God. The only education you need was innovation, a new heart, a new spirit within you. A satanic fury. In the book of the revelation of Jesus Christ and the awful plagues that come, they'll turn the men of Jesus not. They'll curse them and blaspheme them The hotter the fire's got, the more the person. If I can uncap hell tonight, isn't hell the incursion of God into hell tonight? There's nothing to restrain him. Oh, the spirit of hostility that reigns in the heart of many men and is deceitful and desperate with wicked. There's nothing to restrain it in hell, and hell won't be one place where nobody's got everybody else who's condemned yet. Oh, the Haden. Were it not for the common race of God and the strength of the gospel and the holy spirit you could let people in the homes around this building cursing God right now. The Haden. It's not a pleasant picture, but God will unbury your heart and show you where the corruptness of your heart, even if you will never seek Him for what you have. You'll be purified with the blood of Jesus Christ. If I could preach a God who has no power, this generation would like Him. If I could preach a God who has no authority, this generation would like Him. If I could preach a God who saves people out of death and out of grace, this generation would like Him. But if I could preach a God who does whatsoever He pleases, this generation would say, I don't want that. If I could preach a God who is trustworthy, who said He's equal to Him, He's on the way, we'll take that to Him again. If I could preach a God who will maintain salvation, people would say, I like that. But if I could preach a God who must be right, that He does not show mercy, I like church people grinding their teeth at me about that. Man has a satanic fury. And the third thing, not only does he have a satanic fury, he's a God-hater. I think in Matthew 25, 4, where the Lord Jesus said, depart from me. He said, he will have a lasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels. That doesn't mean that he's surprised. That doesn't mean that Satan, that devil is just prepared for the devil and his angels. That means that when men die, God will punish them with a fate like the one who punished the devil with. Satan got in trouble by rebellion. That's your trouble, my friend. You will not have anger in heaven again. And your fate shall be that of the devil. He's going to be cast into the lake of fire and wind and storm that burns forever. So are you. So are you. There's one more revelation of hell. Not only is it a revelation of the more character of a holy God. Not only is it a revelation of the law of satanic spirit, fury, and destiny of men. But it's a blessed revelation of the glory of the cross. My friend, if there's more hell than death and suffering from anything, find Christ on the cross. I remind you that if Christ doesn't save you from temple penalty for sin, your body still must die. There are many children in the world in intense pain. If there's no offer of guilt, why flee? If there's no offer of penalty for sin, why flee because? If there's no final judgment, why flee because? If there's no eternal destruction, offer guilt in God's name for your sins and seek the Lord. If there is offer of penalty to make you the sinner of death, then seek the Lord. If there is final judgment, then the judgment of the word of God the Lord shall be utterly vacated. Then seek the Lord. If there is eternal destruction from the presence of the Lord in the glory of His power, in God's name, my friend, seek the Lord. Seek the Lord. Seek the Lord. But on Calvary's cross, hell points to the glory more than I've heard of in Hebrew brethren anywhere on that cross. Brethren, naked, broken, dying for you. You brethren. You brethren. The glory of Calvary. There's a little song the song of Nazareth. I'd like to see Nazareth. I'd like to come back just as Nebuchadnezzar. Jesus loves me. Yes, I know. For the Bible tells me so. Let every one for him belong. Believe that he is strong. The higher the table, on the dark background, so that the light of God's love and forgiveness of sin and all goodness transected there in the glory of the cross. There's glory. There's glory. Ever since I was a middle school nurse in Calvary many years ago, we gave a guidebook to the women of Calvary, and I was entrusted in the description of the hatred of Calvary. I read about it and I made clear that the women of Calvary are thieves and they're a hawk. Brethren, if you couldn't see the bottom in the corner of the room across the section right near the square at the park, they came with an old leather handkerchief and a piece of leather bag in the room that looked like this electric, bubbling, boiling water coming by. It would be perfect if I made my way and I got out at the handkerchief pole and I took an old handkerchief I'd often been using to clean the spot where everyone was holding. And I held it like this and I lifted the bag and the water flowed down and suddenly just before my eye I pulled it up and it was as pure as, and I stood there and I quivered come now. Come on. Bring it down. Come on. What rains have come this evening? What? What? Let us reign together. Let us reign together. They shall revive us. They shall revive us. They shall repair. And what I've been conscious of that I've again received. There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from an angel's veins and sewage ponds beneath that flood whose oil will I stain. The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his veins and there, not me, and there, there lies he washed all that sin away. I am conscious I've seen from what that man showed all that drowned must have been at least a hundred people, brother. They'll tell him what they've had when they were stationed there and they'll tell him that. Amen. And they said, let us sing with you. And I let them sing and they brought to me this greatest, single, precious song. There I wrote it. And I had it from New York and Texas and California and California. A little company of many men brothers and sisters in the royal Jesus Church who've been brought to the place of trouble where we cry to the Lord and He answers us, deliver us to salvation. We'll sing together O God, thy precious blood shall never lose its power. Though the ransomed church of God be separated. Though the ransomed church of God be separated. There I am. You don't know that song, do you? Let's sing it. Would you know that? There I am. Thy precious blood shall never lose its power. Though the ransomed church of God be separated. Though the ransomed church of God be separated. There I am. As the birds tell their blessed song against the powers of the past that whatever started in this life continues in the midst of the sand that done in this life has not changed and men are not saved from sin you'll be destroyed. Ruined by sin in eternal hell endure that. Thank God for the cross. Thank God for the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
