The Eternal Spirit the Anointing of the Spirit
Willie Mullan

William “Willie” Mullan (1911 - 1980). Northern Irish Baptist evangelist and pastor born in Newtownards, County Down, the youngest of 17 children. Orphaned after his father’s death in the Battle of the Somme, he faced poverty, leaving home at 16 to live as a tramp, struggling with alcoholism and crime. Converted in 1937 after hearing Revelation 6:17 in a field, he transformed his life, sharing the gospel with fellow tramps. By 1940, he began preaching, becoming the Baptist Union’s evangelist and pastoring Great Victoria Street and Bloomfield Baptist churches in Belfast. In 1953, he joined Lurgan Baptist Church, leading a Tuesday Bible class averaging 750 attendees for 27 years, the largest in the UK. Mullan authored Tramp After God (1978), detailing his redemption, and preached globally in Canada, Syria, Greece, and the Faeroe Islands, with thousands converted. Married with no children mentioned, he recorded 1,500 sermons, preserved for posterity. His fiery, compassionate preaching influenced evangelicalism, though later controversies arose.

Sermon Summary
In this sermon, the speaker begins by referencing the book of Exodus and the anointing of Moses by the Lord. He then moves on to discuss the anointing of Jesus in the gospel of Luke, highlighting how Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit and power to preach the gospel and heal the oppressed. The speaker emphasizes the importance of recognizing the Holy Spirit as a person, providing evidence from the Bible, such as Peter's rebuke to Ananias and Sapphira for lying to the Holy Spirit. The sermon concludes by affirming the belief in the Holy Spirit as a distinct person and not just an influence or power.
Sermon Transcription
Now for the past five weeks, we've been looking at the Eternal Spirit. And we took a whole evening to prove the personality of the Spirit. To prove that the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, that He is a person. And we went to great lengths to make this absolutely watertight. And I think the thing that clinched it for most people was, when Peter looked at Aaronias and Sapphira and said, Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost? You can't lie to an influence as far as I know. Some of the Russellites, you know, try to tell me that the Spirit of God is just the power of an influence emanating from God. Well you can't lie to an influence. You can lie to a person, and they lied to the Holy Ghost, but we're not going over that again tonight. And then we took a whole evening to prove that this person is God. We had no troubles about this, and we went on into all the titles of the Spirit of God. And we not only looked at the personality and the deity, but we took another evening looking at the residency of the Spirit, that He indwells every believer, and we mean every believer. Of course we had to take up all the thoughts that we get around us from this source and another, and that evening some people say, you know, that you get saved, and that's not very important. Not until you get this experience where the Spirit of God comes into your life, and then you become holy. And I don't believe that preach, of course. And the reason I don't believe it is this, that when Paul was writing to the Corinthians, he said to the Corinthians, know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you. And mind you, the books he was writing to were far from holy. He had to say to them in chapter 3, I could not speak unto you as unto spiritual. Oh, they had the Holy Ghost, I know. Their body was the temple of the Holy Ghost, but they were not spiritual. He says, ye are yet carnal, for don't come round with this trash, and more we can't take time to deal with nonsense. Oh, it's very true that they had the Spirit of God, but it's equally true that the Spirit of God had not all of them. This is where we need to get to in our Christian experiences. And we've come along to this mighty spot tonight where we're looking at the anointing of the Eternal Spirit, the anointing of the Spirit. And we've got to take time and get into this properly. Now, let's look at the verse or two in 1 John this evening. And we're at 1 John, chapter 2 please. 1 John, we're at chapter 2 and we're at verse 1. John writing here said, My little children, and I want to sort of hold that so that you'll you'll get it very clear who John is writing to. My little children. He's writing to believers. My little children, these things write I unto you that be sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father Jesus Christ the righteous. So he's writing to save people. He calls them my little children. And he's writing so that they sin not, and yet he's conscious that they may sin. And he's wanting to teach them that they have an advocate with the Father. So that he's writing to all the children of God, because all the children of God have an advocate with the Father Jesus Christ the righteous. You see, verse 12 of this chapter, he says, I write unto you little children because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake, so you have no troubles now. He's writing to save folk all right. Writing to people whose sins are forgiven them for his name's sake. Then he says in the next verse, I write unto you fathers because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you young men because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you little children because ye have known the Father, and he's embracing the whole household of faith. All the saints. Let's get who he's writing to just then to view before we go on with his thing. And then on down the chapter, he said this, verse 18, little children, he's back to just reminding them, it is the last time, and as ye have heard that Antichrist shall come even now, are there many Antichrists whereby we know that it is the last time. They went out from us, and he's differentiating between they and us. But they were not of us, for if they had been of us they would no doubt have continued with us. But they went out that they might be made manifest that they were not of us. But ye have an unction from the Holy One. That's the bit I want to get to. Who is he talking to? Just some of the children of God? Talking to the boys who got in the back room and closed their eyes and got through as they say? I'm afraid not. I'm afraid he's talking to all the children of God. Young believers, all believers. All the children of God. And he's saying to them, ye have an unction. Yeah, that's a very interesting word. It's the word charisma. As in the Greek it's charisma. It's the word that charismatic comes from. That's the word. Charisma. Now when he says ye have an unction, what is he meaning? We've got to get into this, because all the children of God are this. Not just one or two of ye, you know. Not just the very holy boys. Talking to all the children of God now, he says ye have an unction from the Holy One. See verse 21, I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lies of the truth. Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the sameth not the Father, but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. Let that therefore abide in you which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which we have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he has promised us, even eternal life. These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you, but be anointed. That's the word again. You know what it is? It's charisma. Sometimes it's translated by an English word unction, sometimes it's translated by the English word anointing. Don't get it mixed up now, because every believer hath this anointing. Every one of them. If you want to start a wee sect on your own and try to make it out of them, just a few of you have it. Well, it's a pity of you, because you're going against the truth and the Spirit mustn't be working properly with you at all. Because when he talks to all the children of God, he says ye have an unction. He says but the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you. Sure, we must take time with that must we? But as the same anointing teaches you of all things and is truth and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in it. So we're going to look at the anointing of the Spirit this evening. We're going to look at this charisma, going to look at this unction, going to look at this anointing, going to find out what it really means. If you look at your notes you'll find that it's before us in this Bible in many senses. When we go back into the Old Testament for a moment or two, we'll find it's there in a ceremonial sense. Oh yes, when the high priest and his sons were anointed. And then of course it's there in an official sense when the king and the prophet was anointed. Because when the king was anointed and the prophet was anointed, they were set apart for a very specific job. And you'll find that this anointing is in the book in this ceremonial and official and typical sense right back there. Because we're going to have a look at our Lord Jesus Christ who is the anointed one. The word Christ is the same word. Yes, charisma, Christ, anointed. Yes, you see that's in an exceptional sense of course. And we'll go into that. And then of course we're going to have a look at this mighty phrase when the father speaks to the son in Hebrews chapter 1 and he says, God, even my God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. That's metaphorical because you're taking the word gladness in the metaphorical sense. What do we mean when we talk about being anointed with the oil of gladness? What do we mean when we say that Christ was anointed with the oil of gladness above his fellows? Who are Christ's fellows? You'd ask all these questions if you're going to tear this into daylight this evening. So it's in this book, in this ceremonial and official and typical and exceptional and metaphorical sense. And of course we'll come back to John 2 where it is in a general sense to the whole church. And then of course we'll have a look at it as we go along and see its many special senses. Well let's go way back to the book of Exodus chapter 40 please. Book of Exodus and we're at chapter 40. We won't waste much time with this but I think it's good that the young people see it for themselves. And remember I've got to carry a young company with me as well as the old students in the class. And we're at the book of Exodus chapter 40. And the Lord is speaking unto Moses. Do you see the first verse? And the Lord speak unto Moses say. Had Moses way up in the mount with him and he's giving him a great many details and this is what he said way down at verse 13 in chapter 40. And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments and anoint him and sanctify him that he may minister unto me in the priest's office and thou shalt bring his sons and clothe them with coats and thou shalt anoint them as thou didst anoint their father that they may minister unto me in the priest's office for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations. Oh this was just the time in the old testament when Aaron and his sons were set apart to be the priests to the Lord. And this special anointing just there was for that purpose and that purpose only. Now let's move on to first Samuel chapter 10 please. First book of Samuel and we're at chapter 10. Verse 1. Then Samuel took a vial of oil first Samuel chapter 10 verse 1. Then Samuel took a vial of oil and poured it upon his head and kissed him. And we're talking about Saul being anointed as king and said is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance. And from that moment because of this anointing he is sanctified and set apart in that sense to be the captain of the Lord's host in that sense. So you see the priest being anointed and you see the king being anointed. Let's move on to first Kings chapter 19 please. First book of Kings chapter 19. And this is where we find Elijah in the cave. He had run away from the job and the Lord came looking for him. Verse 13 we're at first Kings 19 13. And it was so when Elijah heard it that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entering in of the cave and behold there came a voice unto him and said what doest thou hear? Elijah what's a place for the man of God to be found? In an old dark damp cave where there was neither light nor heat nor food. And if you're in a modernistic church this evening that's just where you are. You're in an old dark damp cave where there is neither light nor heat nor food. And I'm sure the Lord comes around sometimes and says what doest thou hear? I can't understand some of them. They seem to be so bright about salvation and they can stick it when the minister tears pages out of the book and denies the virgin breath and so on. What doest thou hear? I don't think you can go on like that you know. I think you have to come out and be separate you know. That's what the book says anyway. And the Lord is saying to him what doest thou hear Elijah? And he said I've been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts because the children of Israel have forsaken my covenant thrown down thine altars and slain thy prophets with the sword and I even I only am left and they seek my life to take it away. Trying to make a bit of a stand for himself. And the Lord said unto him go return on the way to the wilderness of Damascus and when thou comest anoint Hazael to be king over Israel and Jehu the son of Nimshah shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel me hola shalt thou anoint to be prophet in my room being thought of sack now. You can see this country you can see the anointing of the prophets and the priests and the king. Want you to get the whole of that. And this oil was used. And you know that when the woman anointed the body of our Lord Jesus onto the burying as our Lord says she hath anointed my body onto the burial that she did it with ointment. And both the oil and the ointment were symbols of the spirits anointing coming upon believers of this very age. And we've been into some of the symbols. We've looked at the wind. And we have looked at the rivers. And we've looked at the dove. And we're not taking time to go into the symbolical of this this evening of either the oil or even the ointment. I just want to stop and say to all the believers. I hope you know that the day you were saved though you remember that moment when you came so timidly and maybe afraid and maybe crying maybe not too sure sort of saying I believe help my unbelief. The moment that you came the moment that you were saved the moment that you passed from death on to life at that moment you were made kings and priests unto God. Sometimes I have to talk to some of the tight boys from the brethren and there are some here now. And you know you don't want the woman to be priest. Somehow you've got it into your head that only the men in the assembly are priests. And I don't know how you've got it in. Because I'll tell you you've got to stand in heaven one day and you'll hear the whole redeemed host men and women singing. Thou art worthy for thou art slain and hast redeemed us unto God by thy blood out of every kindred and tongue and people and nation and hath made us kings and priests unto God. And you'll have to take it in then whether you take it in now or not. I'd love to go into the priesthood with you. And remember we are kings and we shall win. James McHenry used to say to me you know Willie if the folks really knew who we were they would take their hats off as we passed by. Well they have no notion of taking their hats off just now. We're outside the camp James I said bearing his reproach. But let's have a look at this anointing that came Christ's way. It's got to Luke's gospel chapter 4 for a moment. The gospel by Luke. And we're at the fourth chapter. And you'll find that after his baptism in the Jordan that he was taken into the wilderness to be tested of the devil. And you'll find that after the test verse 14 says we're at Luke's gospel 4 and 14. Jesus returned in the power of the spirit into Galilee and there went out of fame of him through all the region round about and he taught in the synagogues being glorified of all and he came to Nazareth where he had been brought up and as his custom was and I like that bit he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. So I'm sure he could have picked holes in it all right. Must have been one or two old Pharisees in there. Anyhow he went there as his custom was and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Isaiah and when he had opened the book he found the place where it was written the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. Oh that's very thrilling to me you know. Yes I like this bit you know this was him being set aside for this particular purpose at this particular time and it was to preach the gospel to the poor. And remember he always clothed his gospel preaching in words that the common people understood and they heard him gladly and yet at the same time he speak as one having authority and sometimes even the officials have to stand and say never man speak like this man. And you remember let's go to the Acts of the Apostles chapter 10 and in Acts chapter 10 Peter is preaching in the house of Cornelius and what a message he brought to this company. See verse 34 when he got into the house and had them all settled down then Peter opened his mouth and said of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons but in every nation he that fears him and works righteousness is accepted with him. The word which God sent onto the children of Israel preaching peace by Jesus Christ he is Lord of all that word I say ye know which was published throughout all Judea and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached. How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil for God was with him. That's a special anointing again for a special purpose. Oh I know he was anointed of the spirit of God to preach the gospel and anointed that he might heal all who were oppressed of the devil. I think we've got to see these special unctions that's been given. I'm very sure that we don't need to waste the time again because you can see that Christ was anointed in an exceptional sense because he was the anointed one right from his birth. Let's have a look at this metaphorical one in Hebrews chapter 1 the letter to the Hebrews. I always think that this is thrilling because this is the only book in the New Testament that begins with the word God and that tells us God who at sundry times and in divers manners speak in times past unto the fathers by the prophets have in these last days spoken unto us by a son. You see in times past God was speaking unto the fathers and when you say the fathers you must think about the Jewish fathers and he was speaking unto the Jewish fathers by the Jewish prophets. What was he talking about? He was talking about Christ because to him gave all the prophets witness and in those times times past he was talking about Christ. Now in these last days he's speaking unto us by his son. You see the only message that God has for a perishing sinking world this evening is Christ. I wish we could get that into our young men going out preaching. You go preaching Christ son. Yes you talk to the people about Christ, Christ's birth and Christ's life and Christ's death and Christ's resurrection and ascension and coming again. You preach Christ to the people. God has this message for the world today. I think that's the best bit about it. This is the father speaking to the son. Look at verse 8 but unto the son he saith. If you go back up the chapter you'll find it's the father speaking unto the son he saith thy throne O God he called him God because he is God the son. Thy throne O God is forever and ever. A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness and hated iniquity. Once I was asked when I went to the university to preach on the things Christ hated. They thought they had me in a fix you know. I can pick you out one or two teepees for the rest of the night you know. He hated iniquity. Make no mistakes about it. You know some people grew up with the idea that our master was a sort of softy. That he always played the soft pedal and got out of every situation by just being sort of dumb and saying nothing and doing that. I'm afraid you're mistaken. I'm afraid when he went into the temple he got the end of the table and turned it over and you can hear a clatter of the shofar. It was the master that turned that over. It was a master who shouted take these things hence. Thou hast made my house a den of thieves. It was the master who turned on the pharisees and said woe unto you pharisees, hypocrites, whited sepulchers, full of dead men's bones and rottenness how shall you escape the damnation of hell. Don't let's ever get this idea that he was unbalanced. Not a bit of it. And I don't think you're going to be a Christian if you're unbalanced either. I think there's a time to stand up and earnestly contend and there's a time for a kind word. I'm perfectly sure about all that. Well he's speaking unto the son here and he's saying thou hast loved righteousness and hated iniquity therefore just because of that wonderful life of thine therefore God thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. And you can see this is in the metaphorical sense because it's taking gladness and using the phrase the oil of gladness. You've got to settle first of all who are Christ's fellows. Well I believe this you see when you get into this mighty book this wonderful letter to the Hebrews I believe of course that the whole letter deals with our great high priest. It's a consideration of our great high priest the one who was the apostle and high priest of our profession. This is what Paul says let us consider the apostle and high priest. That's the whole book that's what we're doing. And when you think of him as the apostle he's the one who came out the apostle comes out with a message. He's the one who came out from God with a message for men. When you think of him as the high priest he's the one who went in to represent the men who had accepted the message for he ever appears in the presence of God for us just now us believers. I want you to get the hold of this that if you go back through the book oh how many are there thousands of priests right from Aaron? How many high priests? These were his fellows. Oh well he has done more for those who are depending on him than they've ever done. And you know it's a great joy for him to help us to succor us when we're tempted. How he can be touched with the feelings of our infirmities and so on. And if you go through the book you will see the ability wondrous ability of our great high priest. Because if you like to take it back through the book you can find there's a lot of saviors back there. Moses saved the nation, Joshua saved the nation. Yeah you can go through them all or only in a certain sense of course they say just a temporal way. Ah when our savior saves it is not temporal it happens to be eternal. Yes you know he's aware about his help. Yes if you like to go through the book you can find so many things and you'll find that the high priests or the priests or the saviors you'll find some of the great warriors. Ah he's away above them. Sure he only fought the battle once and it never needs a second fight because it didn't leave a second thought. But I think you know the main thing about this anointing of the spirit is where we were beginning this evening. Let's go back to this first John and let's go back to chapter 2 and let's go back to where he said this in verse 20. Now please let's be honest that he's talking to all the children of God. Calls them little children, young men, fathers, whatever you like. And he says in verse 20 but ye have an anointing from the holy one and you know all things. I've not written on to you because you know not the truth but because you know it. And that no lie is of the truth. And down here in verse 27 he said this but the anointing or it's the same word as anointing but the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you. And you need not that any man teach you. Let's sort of thought that bit out first of all. I don't think I need to say to you that this does not refer to Christian teaching like what I'm doing now. Well you wouldn't like to think that John was saying to these believers that you don't need a teacher who is gifted and sent from God. Otherwise it would be stupid of him to say I have written on to you. Let's go back to the gifts for the moment or two and we'll come back here. This is the easiest way to do this. Let's go to first Corinthians and we're at chapter 12. First Corinthians chapter 12. Verse one now concerning spiritual gifts. Brethren talking to believers. I would not have you ignorant. You know that you were Gentiles carried away onto these dumb idols even as you were led. Wherefore I give you to understand that no man speaking by the spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed. And that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts. Did you get the big word diversity? There's all of the different kinds of gifts. But it's always the same spirit. There are differences of administrations but the same Lord. He says verse 8. For to one is given by the spirit the word of wisdom. To another the word of knowledge by the same spirit. To another faith by the same spirit. To another the gifts and there is a nest there. The gifts of healing by the same spirit. And he goes on to talk about these gifts. Now they're all given by the spirit. Now here's what he says in verse 28. And God hath set some in the church. I want you to watch the order that these gifts are placed in the church. First apostles. They were very important characters because they were a sort of part of the foundation. First apostles. Secondly prophets. Thirdly teachers. I want to ask you the question does the spirit of God put teachers in the church? Now the spirit of God is not putting teachers in the church. I'm not putting them in this particular high up place because the apostles and prophets are gone. We were built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets and you don't take the foundation up to the roof you know. So what we have mainly today are teachers. That's what I'm doing these nights. That's why this place is filled with people with their bibles. You're not saying that the Holy Ghost has given teachers to the church and then you're not to listen to them. When it says you have no need that no man teach you. Not talking about the teaching in the church. We'll have to get the no man right. But let me do a little bit more here. You see here are the gifts in the church. Verse 28. God has set some in the church. First apostles. Secondly prophets. Thirdly teachers. After that miracles. Do miracles come after teaching? Yes they do. Then gifts of healing and there is a nest there again. Then helps. Then governments. Then diversities of tongues. Where are they coming in though? Until then? Oh you're trying to tell me unless I go to the back room and get through some gymnastic thing that I'll be no use. Is that what you're trying to tell me? I'm trying to tell you this. That it's right at the end. I'm trying to tell you that this teaching happens to be third. I'm trying to tell you that the apostles are gone and the prophets are gone. And the important thing for the church tonight is teaching. That's what I'm trying to tell you. And I'm trying to tell you that the Spirit of God is given the gift of teaching to some. This is where the church of Jesus Christ goes wrong. Getting a wee fella in the back room who knows nothing about it trying to teach the church truth. Let me tell you this is a real gift. And let me tell you the sooner we recognize it the better. Not every wee lad can do it. I think it's time we did it. You see he asks a lot of questions here. Are all apostles? Is everybody in the church of Jesus Christ apostles? You know the answer don't you? No. Watch again. Are all prophets? You know the answer. No. Are all teachers? No. Just some. Are all workers of miracles? No. Have all the gifts of healing? No. Do all speak with tongues? Say it now. No. And some of you are going around telling the wee fellows unless they speak with tongues they're not right. I don't think you're reading the book at all. I need to take you in and have a week with you. Talk tripe at times. Oh my dear friends let's get this bit fixed now right back here. Yes we're going back to first John and we're going to first John chapter 2. You see I think this text has been abused down through the years. I'll have to take this coat off you don't mind do you? Because uh I'm in one of those moods tonight. Not in a bit of a hurry at all. Now he's taken my time tonight. Now watch this. Let's do it properly now for the Lord's sake. Verse 27. But the anointing, the charisma, the unction which he which every believer hath received of him abideth in you. Now it's some divine grace isn't it? And because it's within you you need not that any man teach you. Now let's skip that word any man because I'm afraid that that has been that has been abused. Here we follow saying you know we don't need to go to the class. We don't need any man to teach us. How dare you son if the Holy Ghost has sent teachers and he has placed them in the church and they're third and they're now first. How dare you upset God's team just because you think you're clever. We thought you didn't even know how to read this. You're the boy that would need to be here. You see this word any man we've got to get it correct now. Let me go over to first Corinthians chapter two to sort of fix it up for you because it fixes itself out here better I think and then we'll come back to this. We're in first Corinthians chapter two and we're at verse nine and Paul says but as it is written I have not seen nor ear heard neither have entered into the heart of man the things which God have prepared for them that love him. Now you see that's the way that the apostles talked at times. Now what he means there I'll read it to you the way he means it and then I'll prove it of course. The eye of the natural man nor the ear of the natural man neither have it entered into the heart of the natural man the things that God have prepared for them that love him. You say now you're very sure of what you're doing here yes I'm very sure I'm very sure. You see it must be the natural man because he's what it says I have not seen nor ear heard neither have entered into the heart of man the things which God have prepared for them that love him but but God hath revealed them unto us by a spirit. Now you see you must see a difference between them and us that never entered into the heart of the natural man. But that doesn't say it hasn't entered into the heart of the spiritual man no the spiritual man God hath revealed these things unto him by the spirit. God has revealed them unto us. You see when we go down the chapter it comes out into clear light it says we'll read it on down just to get the proper connection for what man verse 11 for what man knows the things of a man save the spirit of man which is in him even so the things of God knoweth no man but the spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world but the spirit which is of God that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God which things also we speak not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth but which the Holy Ghost teacheth comparing spiritual things with spiritual but the natural man now that's the time he put the word in there that's what he should have been putting in all along but the natural man receiveth not the things of the spirit of God for they are foolishness unto him neither can he know them. You see you can get the natural man he may come out of Queen's University and he's gone through some department and he's come out with honors of the highest degree bless him he knows his subject all right but he's just a natural man and although he may have a scroll hanging on the wall and names at the bottom with honorable names and he's the doctor or the scientist or whatever he is if he's a natural man he doesn't know the things of God neither can he know them they are foolishness unto him now you don't need that boy to teach you that's what they're saying over in the other place let's go back to the other place now we're at first John chapter 2 and I'm afraid this abuse has been too much you see but the anointing which we're at verse 27 but the anointing yea the unction yea the charisma which he have received of him abideth in you and ye need not that any natural man teach you is that putting light into it no I'm telling you this there are natural men who are very clever men there are natural women who are very clever women and I'll tell you this some of the cleverest women in the world have started sex Christian science so do you know something about that spiritism do you know something about that you know they've come out and they've said you know we've found out a whole new revelation it's not in this book but God has given it to us don't you let that crowd teach you but I'll tell you this if you really see it you see this unction you see this charisma do you see this anointing which is in every saint somehow the moment that some diabolical thing is mentioned there's something inside you rebels it happens to be truth because that's what this unction put in you truth Dr. Irons had told me this himself said I led a big collared man to the law he said it was Friday night and we were on our knees and he was crying and he was really sad says next Tuesday I saw a man out in the open air up on a table and he was trying to pull the bible apart never say that he pulled it apart you say he was trying he will never pull it apart and so he said this fellow was getting about this in a mighty way and I watched the collared man he said he was listening and I kept up behind him and said Sambo what do you got to say to this he says he's clever I cannot I cannot argue with him he's too clever for me but something inside me tells me he's a liar that ever happen to you you just know when things are wrong yeah it doesn't mean that you put away the teachers God has sent you does it oh this has been abused you know yet we fellows who come to this text and sit in the back room for the rest of the life say no we're not going out we don't need anybody I'm afraid that God the Holy Ghost has given teachers and placed them in the church and has placed them there that you might be edified and in the early church when there was no new testament when there was no Paul before he was saved when they met in the early mornings in the upper room you know there was no organ no hymn book no bible no new testament I'll tell you this the prophet stood up and the prophet speak new testament truth before the new testament was there and they speak unto edification exaltation and comfort that's why you should be there that's why we should be there in the morning meeting yet and that's why the teacher should be teaching you see I believe we've got a lot of elders here co-equal with me some of them I believe are becoming better preachers than I am I think Albert is doing tremendously well I'm allowed to say what I'm thinking and I shall say it and I'll tell you this I'll tell you this that the sheep shouldn't be feeding the shepherds you know how morning meetings are spoiled by the sheep trying to feed the shepherds we fellows get up in the morning nothing at all about wasting the time of the assembly and somebody should put their arm around them and squeeze them tight and tell them all about it put my arm around a wee man not so long ago and he says your wife never tell you you're a fool we are not having the morning meeting ruined we are having gift talking here so that people will be edified or exalted or comforted we must keep it in its proper line looking yes did you notice these special senses I don't know if we have time to do much about them you see our lord was anointed to do good of course he went about doing good and you know the prophet was anointed to prophesy Elisha the prophet and our lord Jesus was anointed to preach and he was anointed to die oh yes his body was anointed against the day of its burial he was anointed to minister yes we're anointed to know just to know yes the king was anointed to rule I believe that we live in the Laodicean period and maybe all of us would need our eyes anointed with thyself I heard a man praying in the prayer meeting not so long ago lord have we lost the vision where there is no vision sometimes I think we get so rolled up in truth that we forget that our old mother at home is going to hell you forget your children are not saved yet and the lord is coming maybe we would need our eyes anointed next week we are going on with the incarnation yes what does this entail how did the spirit come upon Mary what happened in the womb of the virgin no the womb experience of the lord Jesus is probably beyond us all but we are going to deal with the spirits work in incarnation and we'll see the enemies against it and all the rest of it
