John MacArthur

John Fullerton MacArthur Jr. (1939–present). Born on June 19, 1939, in Los Angeles, California, to Jack and Irene MacArthur, John MacArthur is an American pastor, author, and radio Bible teacher, renowned for his expository preaching. Raised in a Christian home—his father a pastor—he converted at nine and sensed a call to ministry in his teens. He earned a BA from Los Angeles Pacific College (1961), a Master of Divinity from Talbot Theological Seminary (1963, cum laude), and honorary doctorates from Talbot and Grace Graduate School. Since 1969, he has served as pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, growing it from 450 to over 8,000 attendees. MacArthur founded The Master’s Seminary (1986) and The Master’s University (president, 1985–2004), emphasizing biblical inerrancy. His radio program, Grace to You, launched in 1977, reaches millions globally, and he authored over 150 books, including The MacArthur Study Bible (1997), The Gospel According to Jesus (1988), and Strange Fire (2013), defending Reformed theology while critiquing charismatic practices. Married to Patricia since 1963, he has four children—Matt, Marcy, Mark, and Melinda—and 15 grandchildren. In 2024, he faced health challenges, including heart surgery, but continues limited ministry. MacArthur said, “The Bible is the final authority; it doesn’t need to be supplemented.”
