Rolfe Barnard

Rolfe P. Barnard (1904 - 1969). American Southern Baptist evangelist and Calvinist preacher born in Guntersville, Alabama. Raised in a Christian home, he rebelled, embracing atheism at 15 while at the University of Texas, leading an atheists’ club mocking the Bible. Converted in 1928 after teaching in Borger, Texas, where a church pressured him to preach, he surrendered to ministry. From the 1930s to 1960s, he traveled across the U.S. and Canada, preaching sovereign grace and repentance, often sparking revivals or controversy. Barnard delivered thousands of sermons, many at Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky, emphasizing God’s holiness and human depravity. He authored no major books but recorded hundreds of messages, preserved by Chapel Library. Married with at least one daughter, he lived modestly, focusing on itinerant evangelism. His bold style, rejecting “easy-believism,” influenced figures like Bruce Gerencser and shaped 20th-century Reformed Baptist thought.

Chapter 19 I've been getting letters from your pastor for some months, intermittently since I was there last October, and came to see me while I was ill. I've been getting help from, I was sick from this congregation. I talked with your pastor's son today. He believed the teachings of the Bible. Every denominator of faith stands. At which time, I was taught to grade, I was taught that saving faith is not just such a dependence on him as savior. Doctors tell me they don't believe that now. They believe in taking Jesus as savior, living like hell, and thinking they're going to get to him. We're in a war now, folks. And I was taught, though, that it didn't register with him. Next to him was a man that, he went to school 11 years after the one that went to school 9 years after I did, the same school. And he didn't even need any of these foundational truths of the Bible. Now that's how far we've come. Now let's remember, folks, that you're in a battle here. Don't you fight God's truth. If you're ignorant, keep your mouth shut, till God can teach you something. Don't spout off about something you do not know. I was asking your pastor about a certain preacher who heard me gladly a year ago for several nights, and then he took out. And he said that he wasn't going to let him preach that God wouldn't save people if they wanted to be saved. Now isn't that a terrible thing for a man who claims to be a Christian that teaches that God won't save people if they want to be saved? Why would nobody let him say that? And it will be ignorance. And don't you be guilty of it. There's just one thing that will do a sick church and our churches are sick. They don't need to be comforted. They need to be given the teaching of the word of God. Faithful word of doctrine. And I'm for this, Pastor. And I know we're in a battle. I know when I come back the second time, I'm going to give up that time without a struggle. But I'm counting on you young men and fine people. And I'm advising you that you're going to be defeated and you're going to deny truth and you're going to keep on using the methods and the message that got out in the mess they're in now. Or you're going to learn how to pray and stand by the stuff. I'm betting on it. And I've encouraged you young pastors to speak tonight on my greatest shame. But before I bring the message, I want to say one more word. We're in for a battle. I want you to pray as you never prayed before. Witness to everybody you can, but don't trust anything you do. Do it because that's all you can do. But pray as you never did before. That we might have a visitation. For that's the only thing you'll get to do. The most encouraging thing in my ministry, the 39 years this coming September, that's not long, 32 years of it, I thought to call an evangelist going from place to place. That's a long time to last as an evangelist. So I'm not exactly a novice. And the most encouraging thing, at the end of all that strength, and are doing what this God and the pastors are doing, they are daring, my brethren and sisters, to open the Bible that's been closed for so long. With an open Bible again. I tell you, I'm so encouraged. I have to find preachers now. What we've been preaching and the message we've been using. If there were, we'd have holiness in our churches. It wouldn't turn out. I'm finding churches that are daring to serve God. We'll put our pride on the shelf and quit bragging about what all we've done. About all we've done that make the church laughing. And we'll just be honest. You come and take charge. We've ignored the Holy Spirit ever since I've been a preacher. Until we can't think of any more. And all I've done is get some more people to claim to know Christ. I thank God. And if I could, I'd uphold Him while I'm here. I have over 200 young pastors listening to me by tape. I send them tape. I just returned from Dallas, Texas, where I preached yesterday. I opened up to them that, God, you'll uphold this pastor as he seeks to get back to the old message. But one thing that'll get the job done now, and that's the Holy Spirit to come and take charge. Amen? That's right. Now tonight, from the 19th chapter, I want to begin reading verse 8. I hope you bring your Bibles. For these times are so desperate we're trying to get speak boldly for the space of Holy Mosque. Disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God. But when divers were hardened and believed not, but speak evil of that way before the multitude. Don't you speak evil of the old gospel. If you don't understand it, just keep your mouth shut and speak, saying, Lord, they speak evil of that way. And you do that about this world in Asia. All that I could do or you could do, except proclaim the word and pray. You know anything else? Our fathers didn't think there's anything else to do. Our fathers didn't think there's anything else to do. And they thought that's one thing. And I ask God to come. Why it's been so long since we've prayed. Haven't we said some words? But God came on the scene. And God could do things that we can't do. I can't work miracles. I can't confirm the gospel. It takes God to do that. I can't do anything except be a messenger boy and an intercessor. But if you had them, you'd have what God's given us to fight his battle with. I wish we'd get to where we didn't trust in anything. We didn't have any confidence. And that God was the word. And we'd ask God to confirm it. God, if you're willing, would you like for God to use you, through which you speak the word, huh? Huh? Huh? Who did this? But how'd he do it? By the hands of the Pope. By the hands of the Pope. And he walked such special miracles. It's the first intercessor. But don't get the same results they did when Paul. They just touched Paul's body. They sent him out. You send me a dollar, you know, and I'll send you. Don't seem to get the job done now. And I want you to know this fine. Surely from his body were drawn to the sick handkerchiefs or aprons. And the disease is departed from them. Never one of them. And the evil spirits went out on them. Now, then certain of the vagabond Jews. And all those evil spirits took a fine day. They ran when they hadn't been seen. Did you get it? He'd work tremendous miracles and use my hand. But wouldn't I be a...huh? Won't get the job done. Now, what to do? That's all about it. You must have it. This church must believe it. It must put brand and truth. Name but truth. Apart from the power of God. You'll not get fired up by the Holy Ghost. All... Damnation. These fellows said we'd get deadest preachers. They have to be. There is a fullness and a noise. It won't work. They've got to go together. I remember yet when I was not wanting. I know when I'm up there by myself. It's the lonesomest, most terrible experience a preacher ever experienced. And if you're a Christian, last night I take charge of it. All... It's silly that this little Jesus reviewed the... Oh, the Lord of glory humbled himself and died on the cross. Now God... Whatever it is. It's a name or a story. They are the ones who said we'll work... To get the blood of sin. We've got the whole... We've been importing evangelists to do what God... We're going to go see what we've got to say. See if we like it or not. There's too much of that atmosphere. No, no, honey. We're all doing failure. And I'd rather put on a show. They're crying, they've got to confirm the word. And pierce hearts. We can't do it ourselves. These seven sons of Sceva. They're the ones that said... We've got it! In all orthodox fashion. Verse 15. And the evil spirit answered and said... I know. They're dealing with this evil spirit talking. I'm exaggerating. Some will have some blessing. And the Lord should be praised. Our young people will go to church. I want to make them in the marriage of young people now. Sceva. I want to come to your church. Who are you? Who are you? You think I'm going to hop just because you speak? Who will beat yours and mine? All of them. They did. They went on to save you. It's whether you experience Him that will save you. Yes, these devils are all being hidden. And they made a better profession than any of you folks. They said, we know who you are. Now at the holy... You're living a holy life. And that is and says, who are you? Evil spirits are eating at the moral structure of our homes and our church. Undoubtedness and insurrection and rebellion. For all of these riots and all of this raping of women. Coming out of hearts that are in rebellion against the Lord. God, and they can't get at Christ. So they shoot at any kind of authority. It's just one thousand days. And one of them, a special old bitch, tied him to this stake. Filed a package high. Tried to pull it in. And started to stuff his mouth. And then he said nasty. And he turned all around the crowd. And he said, if anybody hears me groaning. Or so much as say a word of pain. While I'm burning. If I ever one sound. Don't believe anything I've preached. Don't you believe anything. Never made a grimace. Because what he preached. I want to. I've had. But I have as much authority. The only reason that first. I actually have experienced. If you didn't agree. I don't pay attention. This September I've been preaching 39 years. And to my. I've been driven mad. Two young ladies. To get under conviction. The next night. So it was that night. And the Holy Spirit opened the wound again. The next day. They just. Oh you're all right. You're all right. And finally little dear God went crazy. They still didn't see the sign. I'm not. Anybody. But about a hundred people in Segovia. Will get crazy. Business. Or does the devil. Oh I wish. You had this. If you have your body. And we find out the difference. Between Paul and us. I'm not just talking about books. When John was saying. He was still with the spirit. For two weeks. Everybody was stricken. And we talked to people there. He talked about that. And he comes to a conclusion. Verse 18. We'll always be praying. With prayer and supplication. In the spirit. Watch him there. Until it all. And then he says. He got into. Why you want offerings. Boldly. And make known. The mystery. Like the stripes. And Pharisees. And he couldn't do it. But he saved himself. And he can't stretch out a word. Command them to. We command you. We command you. To catch yourself. On the mercy of him. That's it. We don't ask you. We command you. Thirty five years ago. He entered thirty years ago. I had gone. To a royal town. As soon as I. In sixteen months. Without any evangelist. Against. I wasn't idle. He said you ought to. Give this work up. Go to school. Fine. And I got right down. Just kill me. I refused to believe that. But I never. One day I walked up. To the Lord. And one day I. And I came across. The book of sermons. I paid a dime. For the book. Written by the founder. Of the seminary. Dr. B. H. Carroll. I want these little. To get. The Bible. But a man. Who knew it. And preached it. For fifty years. In Waco, Texas. And built that school. A man who didn't apologize. For the Bible. He just tried to believe it. And he didn't find anything. In the Bible. He didn't think God. Meant to be in there. From John. Chapter five. There's this text. There. There. I say unto you. Thou is coming. And now is. When the dead. Shall hear the voice. Of the son of God. And they that hear. Shall live. And I remember one thing. He said. It opened the Bible to me. I've been trying to preach. The truth of it. I could understand what. The longest good job. Of the gospel. And speaking of the voice. That speaks for the sorry. And the dead. And he said. The day is coming.
