A.W. Tozer

A.W. Tozer (1897 - 1963). American pastor, author, and spiritual mentor born in La Jose, Pennsylvania. Converted to Christianity at 17 after hearing a street preacher in Akron, Ohio, he began pastoring in 1919 with the Christian and Missionary Alliance without formal theological training. Tozer wrote over 40 books, including classics like "The Pursuit of God" and "The Knowledge of the Holy," emphasizing a deeper relationship with God. Self-educated, he received two honorary doctorates. Editor of Alliance Weekly from 1950, his writings and sermons challenged superficial faith, advocating holiness and simplicity. Married to Ada, they had seven children and lived modestly, never owning a car. His work remains influential, though he prioritized ministry over family life. Sermon Transcription
The man, David, is praying, and I will break in the fourth verse. He says to the Lord, And my soul is among lions, and thy lives are among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue the sharp sword. Be thou exalted, O God of other heavens, let thy glory be the law of the world. They have prepared the midst for my pit, and my soul is bowed down. They have taken pit before me, into the midst where all their flaws are. My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed. I will sing and give praise. Wake up my glory, wake sovereign heart, I myself will wake early. I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people. I will sing among the people. I will sing unto thee among the nations, for thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds. Be thou exalted, O God of other heavens, let thy glory be above all the earth. Now, those two verses, verse 5 and verse 11, are a dance, though. Be thou exalted, O God of other heavens, let thy glory be above all the earth. I want to talk about that a little, but before we do, I'd like to have you join me in a tentative prayer. I know you'll appreciate that one. Now, our Lord Jesus, thou art risen from the dead, thou art seated at the right hand of the Father in glory everlasting. And we are here in thy name, these have gathered in thy name, and we seek from thee now the aid which only thou canst give. Thou didst go to be with the Father, thou didst send another Comforter, and he might be with us forever. Now, it's said, when he hath come, he will take the things of mine and show them unto you. O Lord Jesus, show us the things of thine. We've seen the things of men, and we're weary and sick. Show us thy glory, show us thyself, we pray. Bless us now as we speak and as we hear, and may we think like believers, speak as a believer, listen as believers, and obey as believers. Christ said. Now, David was in trouble here, and incidentally David was in trouble a good part of his time. And any of you Christians who are worried if you get into trouble, just remember that the man David, he was in trouble a good part of the time. In fact, I don't think you can be a very good Christian and not be in at least a little trouble occasionally, and not if you're a mate, necessarily. It wasn't that David's mate. David found himself here in a situation that he called being among lions. He said that these lions had teeth as sharp as arrows, and they had feet, and it was real difficulty. And so David did the same, which he knew would win for him, if we're going to win. David immediately put God between him and his enemies. He didn't go to his amazement. Now, David knew that he was going to have victory. He knew that. God would give him victory. But he knew that he couldn't have victory if he prayed, O God in thy glory, we above all is the secret of that we put God where he is, and until we put God where he belongs. Now, the trouble with the world is, you see, God is above all. He's in station, he's exalted in dignity, and that's the way you should be above all. And the health of creation, let God be above all. But as soon as, and what I say may not be true, and I think if we look at the records, as millions of people call themselves by the name of God, or between anything and God. And to the average Church member, almost always it's money, and God comes in for a second. Almost always. And when it comes to our enemies, there's God, and then there are our ambitions, and we're forced to make it. You take a great many, and they should have had their suck that they had a good vote. And then there's especially in gentlemen, in marriage. I've written many years, I've been a pastor, and 31 years in Chicago, and interviewed and talked. I have had so many people, and they all will go through it anyhow. But you take the average young fellow, or as faith answers to faith in wars, he'll have his way as he ought to. But in the meantime, the world is staggering on. I say, David knew that if he was going to be weaved down to that medium base that thou mayest be exalted, then the Lord will exalt him. There was no pleasure in crushing his children under his feet any more than he would take. But being what we are, and in order that we try to rise, you don't know how little you are. Luther said, no man can get too little than a big man. He can use a big man if they think they're little, but he can't use a big man if he knows they're little. God is to be exalted. It's an integral part of the Christian message. Any man would come after me, let him take up his cross, and deny him forsake houses, and let him jump and play like children on our way to heaven. Take your cross, and as you exalt. I began in the state of Pennsylvania as a lad that was born there. I won't say that either. God will excuse me for saying that. I know I'm too old for my own comfort, but I was born here, the Lord wanted me to be born. I've lived ever since, moved back to New Orleans, and I converted there. I had the right to give up everything. My mother was a moral woman, but she was a pagan. She didn't believe in the Lord, and she was afraid of the dogs out under the windows and all that. It was just a pagan home that I was bred in. Then one day I heard a man preach on the street corner of Case and Madison in the city of Akron, Ohio, and he said, if you don't know how to pray, pray instead of pray. And the Lord converted my soul. He told me that wasn't the right word. It was the same corner. I had the experience of God's blessing, remember? She said, well, I imagine. She said, my son preached. That's bad enough to preach on the street. Now two sisters got converted. He said, there's something in his head. He's got something in his head. He's been up there on the hill and got something in his head, but he didn't know that I'd been on my knees. The Lord doesn't want you to get lower than you are. When you make people know, children, six sons and one daughter, now we have 17, and I think that the Lord is right. It takes no pleasure in the death of His saints, and it takes no pleasure in the tears of His household, but He can't bless us until we've humbled ourselves. Now, this is what the Spirit is saying tonight, and I'm sure if you let me hand you this, it'll be a letter that you can find in your high spiritual heights. It will lead you to a place of richness and inward experience and deep satisfaction in the kingdom of God. And it's simply this. Be thou exalted over me. You know, we're born into the world with the notion that everybody, and we've got to be exalted over everybody. He used to say, you need to tell me this. They struck back, and he struck back, and that's the way he lived. He lived that way. We want to be exalted, but now, O Lord, let Thy glory be above. And then I want you to put in everything. Let Thy glory be above my people. Get a little raised and salved. But the Lord wants you to give up your possessions to Him. One of the little books, I don't sell books. I'm not a book salesman, and the books that are here of mine, I have seen creatures write books and drag them around, picking up the whole thing and having no possessions. God knows I wrote that out of, you know, we had our six sons, and when the youngest one, and she came, I loved her little red face, and we named her Rebecca. And, of course, she was our sweetheart from that moment. These kids of ours, you know, they have sweatshirts, and we'd go buy nice cute little clothes for her, and we'd send the little girl to have all. That, to me, she became so much to me. We used to build a new church, and we'd have a fellow, and it was all done very well. One of them was my little girl, little Becky, a little delightful. I remember how I went down before God for giving up. If I had kept her, and everything that you, just as long as you hang on, see where that story is? She didn't die. That's the way it works, my friend. It's not between me and you anymore. And be thou exalted above my friendships. St. Alon said that we hesitated to give up our friends in order that we might have the friendship. So, dear Lord, be thou exalted above me, and be thou exalted above myself. Lord, the Lord, dear children, I'm so afraid. You know, a sinner, but, and I believe you, but point out kind of me. And so, why? Why? God told him what he did. Why? Somebody said to him, it's time for you to repent. And he went over a crossroad. He lived right on until he finally died in Japan. He died when he was about 68 or so. How did he manage to live with that baby? He counted not his life. I know two preachers. One of them had, it was, the doctor said to him, Reverend, you, so he parted for the church, and, and lived like a vegetable. And he finally died. Another one I knew, you have angina pectoris, and if you're not careful, is to give God your life. And say, be thou exalted above my friends. And you may find this very hard to comprehend. But, of course, today, you know, God has his crew. I find them, I find them all over the United States. People who want God more than they want, want God more than they want popularity, want God more than they want friendships. They want God more than they want praises. And you seek me with all your heart. Now, there's the roster of the spiritually great. I wrote another life, the life of a great Canadian preacher who founded the Missionary Society. And, of course, in the entire society, it was the same. Dr. Simpson could do no wrong, you know. So, when I was writing his life, I got to investigating, and I talked to an old Scotsman who had known him for many years. And he began to tell me things about him that weren't complimentary. And all sorts of things. He wasn't a perfect man. The old man straightened up. He said, God bless Asia. He knew that God would get him. Everywhere I've been, wherever I go, usually, you know, and there are, somewhere I read that it's published, but it sounds good to me anyhow. Somebody said, it is that I offer the prayer of his kingdom coming. It's either you or his to get people to get grown, sir. And he will, as I have said, to do this. But your faith is strong enough to allow you to do it. Would you dare to say, O Lord Jesus, take me now and begin to work with me, and lead me by my hand. Be thou exalted, O leptine Lord, and take me and lead me on, Lord. Now, that's a spiritual experience. That's not something you do by getting up in one place. Would you have the courage to say, we're going to pray in close now, before we do, even though we don't belong to the same local churches, and ask whether you'd like to have help. Would you pray for me that the Lord would remove everything from your Asian hand now, heathers? Yes, yes. All right, let's stand and pray. We have children who have requested prayer. Lord, Satan is such an evil enemy, and the world is everywhere about us, and the flesh is so persistent. Now, I would love to be with somebody who's having a tough time. Sometimes the flesh conquers, and sometimes the world gets the better of us. We want it to be reversed. We want it to be the other way around. We want to always have the win. We want to see the victorious always, as thou art victorious through David. That's certain. O God, we pray for these who have requested it. We pray that thou would take them through, bring them to an experience in their lives where they could truly and possibly know nothing's between them and thee. No friends, no family, no reputation, no ambition, no money, no property. Nothing is between them and thee, but thy face beams down upon them as clear as the sun on a bright day with no cloud between. Lead, we pray thee, in this. Now we pray for the days that are before us. We pray that thou would bless us, O Lord, and let there be a deposit of glory left in this city as a result of these meetings. We beseech thee, Holy Ghost, in power and might, from the throne above, from the heart of Jesus the Lord, come and bless this city in the day and in the evening. And do what thou hast planned to do, sovereign Lord. Do what's in thy mind to do for these people, for the churches of this city, for the people who will be here, whether there be many or few. Do something, Lord, we pray thee. Work it out. Do it, O Lord, God, we pray thee, as clearly as raising a dead man. That concludes side 1. The second message on this cassette by A. W. Tover can be found at the beginning of side 2. Would you therefore fast forward to the end of side 1 and turn the cassette over. You may then find a short piece of blank tape at the beginning of side 2 before the message commences. Thank you. The man, David, is praying, and I will break in the fourth verse. He says to the Lord, My soul is numb with life, and I lie with you.
