In Christian preaching, the distinction between spirit and form emphasizes that true religion springs from the inner life and vitality of faith, not merely external rituals or structures. Illustrations often contrast the living essence of the Spirit with lifeless traditions, echoing the call to worship in spirit and truth (John 4:24) and warning against hollow practices (2 Corinthians 3:6).

Religion's spirit is the vital core, while forms alone are empty and corruptible.

Religion may be compared to a banana. The real heart religion is the juicy pulp; the forms and ceremonies are the skin. While the two are united and undivided the banana keeps good until it is used. And so it is with religion. Separate the forms from the spirit, and the one will be of no more value than the banana husk, while the latter will speedily decay and become corrupt, apart from the outward expression.
