Jacob's Ladder

John Newton (1725-1807)
Verse 1
If the Lord our leader be,
Verse 2
We may follow without fear;
Verse 3
East or west, by land or sea,
Verse 4
Home, with him, is ev'ry where:
Verse 5
When from Esau Jacob fled,
Verse 6
Though his pillow was a stone,
Verse 7
And the ground his humble bed,\
Verse 8
Yet he was not left alone.
Verse 9
Kings are often waking kept,
Verse 10
Rack'd with cares on beds of state;
Verse 11
Never king like Jacob slept,
Verse 12
For he lay at heaven's gate:
Verse 13
Lo! he say a ladder rear'd,
Verse 14
Reaching to the heav'nly throne:
Verse 15
At the top the Lord appear'd,
Verse 16
Spake, and claim'd him for his own:
Verse 17
" Fear not, Jacob, thou art mine,
Verse 18
" And my presence with thee goes:
Verse 19
" On thy heart my love shall shine,
Verse 20
" And my arm subdue thy foes:
Verse 21
" From my promise comfort take,
Verse 22
" For my help in trouble call;
Verse 23
" Never will I thee forsake,
Verse 24
" Till I have accomplish'd all."
Verse 25
Well does Jacob's ladder suit
Verse 26
To the Gospel-throne of grace;
Verse 27
We are at the ladder's foot
Verse 28
Ev'ry hour, in ev'ry place:
Verse 29
By assuming flesh and blood,
Verse 30
Jesus, heav'n and earth unites;
Verse 31
We, by faith, ascend to God,
Verse 32
God to dwell with us delights.
Verse 33
They who know the Saviour's name,
Verse 34
Are for all events prepar'd;
Verse 35
What can changes do to them
Verse 36
Who have such a guide and guard:
Verse 37
Should they traverse earth around,
Verse 38
To the ladder still they come:
Verse 39
Ev'ry spot is holy ground,
Verse 40
God is there--and he's their home.
