Forty Days And Forty Nights

George Smyttan
Verse 1
Forty days and forty nights
Verse 2
Thou wast fasting in the wild;
Verse 3
Forty days and forty nights
Verse 4
Tempted, and yet undefiled. Sunbeams scorching all the day;
Verse 5
Chilly dew-drops nightly shed;
Verse 6
Prowling beasts about Thy way;
Verse 7
Stones Thy pillow; earth Thy bed. Should not we Thy sorrow share
Verse 8
And from worldly joys abstain,
Verse 9
Fasting with unceasing prayer,
Verse 10
Strong with Thee to suffer pain? Then if Satan on us press,
Verse 11
Jesus, Savior, hear our call!
Verse 12
Victor in the wilderness,
Verse 13
Grant we may not faint nor fall
Verse 14
So shall we have peace divine:
Verse 15
Holier gladness ours shall be;
Verse 16
Round us, too, shall angels shine,
Verse 17
Such as ministered to Thee. Keep, O keep us, Savior dear,
Verse 18
Ever constant by Thy side;
Verse 19
That with Thee we may appear
Verse 20
At the eternal Eastertide.
