America Will Never See Revival...Unless...

S
sermonindex

This morning I was moved to tears as I watched the short Open Doors video below. The video tells the story of the Chinese revival. The brother in the video shares how the Chinese church started praying for a movement of God. A movement of God that was set in the midst of persecution.

https://youtu.be/tDfZDMwu7UM

As I reflected on the video. It dawned on me that the Chinese believers were at a point of desperation. For they were in the midst of communism. They were in the midst of oppression. Because of this they cried out to God who heard their prayers and sent His Holy Spirit.

Do we honestly think that we are going to see a movement such as occurred in China occur in the United States? Do we really think that a revival conference held in southern, sunny California is going to bring about a movement of God?

Where are the heartfelt prayers? Where are the tears that are being shed? Twelve preachers are scheduled to preach? Has anybody scheduled the Holy Spirit to show up?

America, particularly the American evangelical church, will never see revival. We will never see revival until we have reached a point of desperation that will drive us to our faces before God and to cry out to him.

As far as I can see we are not at that point desperation. We are at a point where we can hold revival conferences. But we are not at a point where we are on our faces before God. Where we are in our prayer closets before him.

Our persecuted brothers and sisters pray that we will see persecution. They pray we will see persecution to deliver us from our materialism. They pray we will see persecution so that we will seek him in desperation. May their prayers not be in vain.

It’s funny- they pray for us to be persecuted and we pray for them to be delivered from their persecution.

Can’t remember the last time I prayed for someone to be persecuted. Nor did Jesus or any of the apostles.

I suppose they can pray however they wish. I, however, will pray that they be delivered FROM their persecution. Even Jesus prayed that prayer for Himself.

Brother,

I don't think we will see a large revival like that until persecution comes to America. Not everything is bad about American Christianity, I found a wonderful church and I - myself - am having a personal revival!! And I'm taking it to the jails, teaching them about loving God and loving people by the power of Christ!!

The Lord showed me instead of teaching about end times, teach people to love HIM and they'll be ready to meet HIM whenever and however they die. Does that make sense?

Brother, I wish you the best! God bless you,

How about the UK or Europe or Australia , I live in the UK
Revival may happen during a time of persecution like Iran , it is God who determines it not me , I think the first place he should start is with us as without Jesus we can do nothing

S

There is a refining ekement of persecution. The New Testament bears witness of this. Our brethren in China and Iran understand this. They see that persecution has refined their faith walk in Jesus. The tribulations they endure has conformed them as unto Jesus. They have embraced the cross so that Jesus would live in them.

They see that the American or the western church is trapped and in love with the world. We will never see revival under these conditions. Only when we are brought to a state of desperation will we cry out to God.

This is what the persecuted pray for us. That we go through suffering that will conform us into Christ. That, as they. we will see Jesus in the midst of our sufferings. Por we are surely not going to see Jesus on the midst of our material prosperity.

Believe it or not the persecuted do pray for us out of hearts of love. Their desire is to see the American church purified as the Chinese or Iranian church is.

Brother Blaine: don't allow your zeal for the persecuted Church turn you into a persecutor of the un-persecuted Church. Of course the Spirit of God will be present at the revival conference, if he dwells in those men, he will be present.

The important thing to remember is we do not see the whole picture, we cannot allow ourselves to become so tunnel-visioned about our own passions that everyone else is measured in accordance with our own zeal, in short if they are not like us, they are deficient. This kind of thinking is counter-productive, it is counter to promoting godliness among the other believers. The fact of the matter is, no matter how important we view our own passion/calling it is not the litmus test that Jesus gives to his people. Jesus is Lord over his own Church, we and our callings are not.

If all were focused on the persecuted Church who answers the skeptics that attack the Church? Or, who pastors those who are afflicted with various temptations? Or who will evangelize the lost in our own neighborhoods? We might answer "someone can do all those things"...and that would be true, but not with the same diligence and zeal that a person Jesus has called to be a Pastor or an Evangelist or a counselor to pregnant women. Jesus has a very wide scope, he has a big plan far bigger than the part we play.

Posting reproofs as to us as though God does not speak to anyone else here, or had said nothing to anyone about what God intends and has called them to do is really an implied slap at Jesus and not really at the SI discussion group.

Do not let your zeal become a 'party spirit' where if someone is not of your party they are susceptible to rebuke and reproof...this is not the Spirit of God, but of man.

Marvin I'm simply posting observations as seen from a global perspective. This is not about my calling or my passion for the pereecuted. All one has to do is Google the history of the revivals in China and Iran. Or even watch the posted video in the OP if one takes the time to do so.

Prior to 1949 Christianity had a nominal growth in China. After the Communist takeover under Mao Tse Tung the Western missionaries were kicked out. The pundits were saying that Communism had triumphed and that Christianity was irrelevant.

Yet God always has the final word. Because of the emptiness of Marxism and the ensuing persecution of the Cinese church. The believers came to a point of desperation. As such they cried out to God. God heard their prayers and sent a movement of the Holy Spirit into China which still carries on to this day.

The Chinese believers were desperate. In their desperation they cried out to God. God answered their prayers. We in America have not gotten to such a point of desperation. Thus we will not see revival until we are brought on our face before God as the Chinese believers were.

By the way when Nixon normalized our relations with China in the 1970s. The Chinese house church movement was in the tens of millions. It's estimated now that there are more than 80 million believers in China. The Cinese church is growing. That in the midst of renewed persecution of our brothers and sisters in the shadow of the cross.

It is the same story in Iran. But time what not allow me to give an account of what is occurring there.

Suffice to say we in America are not at the point of desperation cry out to God to see him move. Only until we are brought on our faces before him can we hope to see any type of a move up the Spirit in our midst.

Suffering will either drive us to Christ or drive us away from Christ. Our persecuted brothers and sisters understand this. We in American evangelicalism do not understand this. We see that suffering is a curse of the devil. And that God's hand upon us is a life of ease.

God's desire for us is ultimately an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. This will require us to lay down everything to follow him. This is something that is not taught in our American churches today. But the cross is taught and willingly embraced in those nations where the church is persecuted.

It was Corrie Ten Boom who said you never know that Jesus is all you need until you discover that Jesus is all you have. Right now we have Jesus in the midst of our materialistic desires. We can have Jesus in the midst of our sin. When Jesus is saying I need you completely and holy.I want you to be apart from your sin.

As things now stand in the American church I don't think we will ever seek Christ apart from our worldly, carnal desires. If God decides to bring a remnant out of America and I'm sure he does. It will be through a calamity or persecution or an economic downfall or all of the above. That will put us on our faces before God. Only then will we hope to see a moving of his Holy Spirit.

This morning I was moved to tears as I watched the video below.  Even now tears are streaming down my face.  The short Ooen Doirs video tells the story of the Chineese revival that was birthed in prayer.  A revival set against the back drop of persecution.

https://youtu.be/tDfZDMwu7UM

We want to see a movement of God in our own nation. But are we willing to pay the price in prayer. May it be that we might have to enter into the shadow of the cross?  May it be that we might have to undergo persecution to see what China has seen?  For sure the Chinese believers would say that persecution is a blessing.

I have read accounts where the persecuted will pray for us that we will undergo persecution to see the blessings of revival. Are we willing to pray such if we desire to see revival.

The brother in the video says let us pray. Let us pray......

1.  Let us pray for the persecuted.

2.  Let us pray for people who share our faith, but not our freedom.

3.  Let us pray for the people who constantly live in fear for simply following Jesus.

4.  Let us pray that we might be inspired to make a difference in our own country.  Let us pray for revival in our own nation and around the world.

No prison, no border, no door is closed to us who are praying.

Let us pray.

In 1949 prior to the Communist takeover of China there was about a million believers in China. In 1979 there were 10 million believers. With that number doubling ever so often. It was through the prayers of the saints that the church in China grew. Again The emptiness of the atheistic doctrine of Marxism and the persecution of believers caused the Chinese church to grow by keaps and bounds.

But it must be remembered that the Chinese saints were desperate. So desperate that they were willing to pay the price in their prayers. Their prayers to see God move and souls converted.

Prayer was their lifeline to God. Prayer was their breath to God. It was through the prayers of the saints that revival came to China.

The Chinese had no revival conferences. They had no revival preachers. They had no Sermonindex with a treasure trove of sermons to encourage them. All they had was the Lord Jesus Christ. All they could do was cry out to him.

We have not reached that point of desperation to where we are crying out to God and God alone. Crying out to God and God alone to see a revival in the American Church. We have not reached that point of desperation where we are on our faces before him.

I believe our idea of revival is that God spare the status quo and not bring judgment upon America. In other words leave the bride in her carnal sin.

But God is desiring a holy bride. A holy remnant even out of America. And it may very well be through the fires of affliction and suffering that bride will be purged. And that bride will be refined. That bride will be the remnant that comes out of evangelicalism. That Remnant that comes out of sin and depravity. In their suffering they will be made like Christ.

Dare we pray that God make us desperate for him? Dare we pray that God make us desperate for him alone. Do we need to hear more revival preaching? Or do we need to do more revival praying? Praying that our desperation will be for Christ and Christ alone. Are we willing to pay the price in prayer to see God move across the church and across this nation.

Only a few will. Will we be the few.

PROPHETIC WORD TO THE EKKLESIA ”“ By Dan Hubbell

The Lord has ministered into my spirit a prophetic word for believers around the world and He has PROPHETIC WORD TO THE EKKLESIA.

There are two distinct things happening prophetically at this moment in history around the world:

The borders of many nations around the world are being closed to outside Christian influence. This is in preparation for internal persecution of national believers. This persecution by governments is meant, from their viewpoint, to limit and ultimately eliminate outside Christian ministries.
Governments are going to continue to persecute, arrest and imprison national believers with their goal being to totally eliminate all Christian work in their nations.

National believers will be shut off from international connections and communications so much so that believers of each nation will be totally dependent upon the Lord for His provision and empowerment for the persecution and purifying that is coming.

This is the primary reason that the believers of these persecuted nations must begin now to completely trust the Lord for His provision as their resource, rather than depending upon believers of other nations to provide for their needs.

God is going to show Himself strong, on behalf of His remnant people who are the true and faithful believers. And as the persecution intensifies, God will miraculously make provision for His children. As the early New Testament Ekklesia was persecuted and purified, all true believers today in these nations will go through persecution and experience the same cleansing and purifying.
This purifying and cleansing will result in a miraculous spreading of the Gospel of the Kingdom of God within these nations and unto the ends of the earth. And instead of true believers decreasing in numbers, as is now believed by the opposing governments, there will be an increased growth in the numbers of His remnant people who will be prepared and empowered by the Holy Spirit to take the Gospel of His Kingdom to the uttermost part of the earth.

Matthew 24:14 "And this gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and THEN SHALL THE END COME!”

"Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”

Revelation 22:20

ӢӢӢӢӢӢӢӢӢӢӢӢӢӢӢӢӢӢӢӢӢ

In 1949, Mao Tse Tung kicked out the Western missionaries in China. China was closed to outside influence. Western missionary agencies could not penetrate China after the Communist takeover.

It was at this point that the Chinese believers had no choice but to seek God and cry out to him. In essence they were closed in. God had boxed them in. He and he alone was the only recourse for the Chinese church. Because of this the Chinese sought him with diligent prayer. And God answered!!! And how he answered!!!

Even to this day the prayers of the Chinese believers are being answered and the Holy Spirit is going forth. But only when all was closed off. The Chinese believers had to look up nd cry out to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Many Chinese believe have said that the best thing that Mao had ever done was to kick out the Western missionaries. Because by so doing the Chinese church had to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. And trust in him and him alone to bring forth the revival that we are now seeing today.

I don't know when the brother above gave his prophetic word. But I would say that what is occurring in China is fulfilling what he is prophesying.

The scripture says all that will live godly will suffer persecution.

The apostle Paul suffered many things for the cause of Christ and wrote in Philippians to rejoice in the Lord always.

Philippians 3:1-3 (KJV) 1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed [is] not grievous, but for you [it is] safe. 2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. 3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

Philippians 4:4 (KJV) Rejoice in the Lord alway: [and] again I say, Rejoice.

I think we all need to be rejoicing in the Lord always instead of being down and discouraged. We need to learn to rejoice in thanksgiving unto the Lord. We need to shout aloud His praises! He is worthy of our trust!

Blessings to all!

Yes!!!!

Our persecuted brothers and sisters pray that we will see persecution BECAUSE they have read "The Lord's Prayer"

I agree... TMK!

(I was being a little "tongue in cheek" with my last post.)

Being persecuted would lead some to being tempted to deny the Lord.

Persecutors are NOT driven by a loving heart void of evil.. they ARE the personification of evil!!!

Praying for others to be persecuted is NOT Biblical!

"I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.” John 17:15

S

Todd Jesus prayed your kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. If we pray to advance his Kingdom this will bring persecution. Jesus said if they persecuted me they will persecute you.

The American church is not exempt from prosecution. The demands of the cross are implicit even about American evangelicals. A rejection of the world and embracing of the cross will bring about persecution. And many times it will be persecution from the professing evangelical church.

Somehow we think we can have the revival without embracing the cross. We think we can have revival in comfortable revival conferences and expect the Holy Spirit to break out in a controlled way. We think by listening to preachers preach about revival we expect revival to break out. That without paying the cost of extended prayer on our knees.

The place where the Holy Spirit is moving is in nations that are not friendly to the gospel. Mainly because the believers in those nations have embraced the cross so that Christ can live in them.

But then those people in the nations of Iran and China are desperate. The persecution and the oppression of the governments have brought them to a point of desperation that they cry out for the living Christ.

We in America have not reached that point of desperation. We have not reached the point of desperation to where Jesus is all we have. Again qpoting Corrie Ten Boom. She says you never know that Jesus is all you need until you discover that Jesus is all you have.

The American notion of revival is that God preserve the status quo and not bring judgment upon us. When really revival should be a longing, desiring of the presence of God and God Alone. For that we have to be brought to a point of desperation that he is our only desire.

We are not at that point. The most dangerous prayer can be God make us desperate. God make us desperate for you and you alone. That will in on embracing of the cross and persecution. But this is a message that the American Church does not want to hear. Do we comfortable American evengelical stair to prove such a prayer. For it will mean a stripping of everything we hold dear to where we see Jesus and Jesus alone.

But a "few" on America will hear. It will be those few who choose to enter through the narrow way of Jesus and his cross. Upon this remnant few God will bring Revival. But it will be those few who embrace the cross. They will be persecuted by the "many" And it will be the many in the professing evengelical American Church.

The question is. Are we one of the few?

Blaine

T
TMK

Sorry dspks- didn’t catch the "tongue in cheekiness!” My bad.

Bear if you can show me one place in scripture where we are told to actually pray that either we or others be persecuted, then I will step in line with your way of thinking.

I agree that a true witness for Jesus will endure some sort of persecution- that just goes with the territory.

So, what we should pray for is that we will be true witnesses for Jesus. If we are true witnesses for Jesus He will give us grace to endure persecution.

You are putting the cart before the horse by stating we must have persecution in order to be true witnesses. Scripture says it is the other way around.

Even so, I will continue to pray that brothers and sisters experiencing systematic persecution will be delivered from that persecution.

In fact I’ll pray that right now: "Lord, show mercy on our brothers and sisters and your children who are experiencing systemic and state sponsored persecution. Rain fire and brimstone on those evil men who scheme and torture and kill your precious children who you bought with a price. Strengthen those who call out to you until they are delivered and preserve their lives. Amen.

Todd writes...

/// Rain fire and brimstone on those evil men who scheme and torture and kill your precious children who you bought with a price. ///

Todd even the persecuted don't pray for their enemies that way.  Their prayers are their persecutors will come to know Christ.

Luke 9:51-56 (NASB)

When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem; and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him. But they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem.

When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?"  But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you are of;  for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them." And they went on to another village.

Your prayer is of another spirit. It is certainly not the Spirit of Christ.  We do not pray that way for the persecutors on Persecution Watch.  Our prayers always and have been for their salvation. We pray the way Jesus did from the cross. Father forgive them for they know not what they do. We pray they come to know Christ.

That is what we are doing in a 31 Night Watch through Ramadan. Crying out for the salvation of Muslims who persecute believers in Christ. Not that God vonsign them to the pit of hell. I would not wish the horrors of hell even on my worst enemy.

Again I'm posting the open doors video so it can be viewed for clarification. The Chinese believers were desperate. The persecution came as a result of the communist government takeover. This made the believers desperate to see the living Christ move in their midst. Much time was given to extended prayer.

https://youtu.be/tDfZDMwu7UM

I simply point out that the American church has not reached that point of desperation. Dare we pray that God make us desperate. That may be through persecution. That may be through an economic collapse. That may be through an environmental or terroristic catastrophe. That may be through all of the above.

The Chinese were forced in desperation to cry out to God. The American church is not forced into desperation. The American church is not desperate for the living Christ to move among them. We are steeped in our narcissism and materialism. We are steeped in our own self centered sin. Perhaps seeing the sin in the church will cause a few to cry out for God to move. But in the end it may be the few who repudiate the religious system of Babylon and go out to the cross to bear his reproach. But it will be those few who will experience the true revival Pentecost of God.

There will be the few who hear the call of Christ to go through the narrow way. That will be the narrow way of the cross. There will be the few who will labor in their prayer rooms and cry out to God for Holy Ghost power to come up on them. These will be the few who will see the true power of God to come up on them. These will be the ones who will go out to win the souls and to do the miracles of the Holy Spirit.

But these will also be the few who will be persecuted by the religious structure of this age. The remnant few will be those who will be persecuted by the organized evangelical church. Just as happened with Jesus. Just as happened with the first century church. Just as happened with the Anabaptists. Just as happened with any remnant group who went outside the camp to embrace the cross and follow Jesus. This present remnant will be persecuted by those who embrace the religious spirit of this age.

Again the question is will we be one of the few who will choose to go to the narrow way of the cross and to apprehend Jesus in all of his fullness. Will we be the few who will labor in the prayer room to truly cry out for Holy Ghost power to come upon us. And dare to do the works of Christ. Will we be one of the few who will go outside the camp to bear the reproach of Jesus by taking up his cross.

The Chinese believers were willing to do it. And they paid the price. The Iranian believers were willing to do it. And they paid the price. Are we willing to do it? And are we willing to pay the price?

Note: The video from open doors which Blaine posted here https://youtu.be/tDfZDMwu7UM is attached to the below article on my own website. It was placed there to accompany another video and attached article which I will post separately. The one thing that Blaine said that was mistaken had to do with praying for persecution on the church. The video from Open Doors does not say that. However, this is all it takes to have others mock and ridicule another. What Blaine could have said is that persecution is coming to the USA and not even revival will turn it away. That is prophetic. But then Blaine did not say he was a prophet. The video from Open Doors also begins from 1949. Some of that period until 1956 covers the time watchman Nee was imprisoned prior to his trial. It was essentially believers who had witnessed at his trial including 許梅驪.

This is her statement at Nee's trial.

My Complaint
Xu Mei Li

The Government has recently cracked down on Watchman Nee’s anti-revolution group, who has disguised themselves as a religious service provider for many years, I feel so happy and relieved with an indescribable feeling. I sincerely thank the government who eliminated this great evil. I was one of the Christian youth, and a victim of Watchman Nee’s anti-revolution group with its malicious and misleading [agenda] when I was a student at Shanghai No. 2 Medical College. I was deceived and poisoned by them, I acted as an accomplice to poison the youth, badly influencing many youth and children in the universities, middle schools and hospitals. Now, I have woken up. I want to [make this] appeal and uncover the crime committed by the Watchman Nee’s anti-revolution group.

When the Shanghai people were inspired and excited to welcome the liberation, anti-revolutionists Watchman Nee and Li Changshou (fled to Taiwan) and induced a group of youth to Taiwan continuing to encourage them to be their leading malicious practitioners. Why did Watchman Nee and Li Changshou have such a strong interest in Taiwan? Because they are all Chiang Kaishi lap dogs.

In 1950 when the United States imperialists invaded Korea suddenly, Watchman Nee openly told us not to participate in the Korean campaign at the special meetings for core members in Shanghai. I was misled and affected by his statement, I thought even if the United States imperialists invaded Huangpu River at Shanghai, it has nothing to do with me. So many Christians are misled by his statement not to fight against the United States Imperialist’ aggression. It was Watchman Nee’s hope that imperialism would enslave the Chinese people again.

Watchman Nee wanted us to act as double-face people, on one side we are good students who are obedient to school rules with good academic performance, on the other we will use all means to disseminate the ideas for anti-revolution. They want me to spread the ideas "do not be tempted by anything" and "do not think about it" among young Christians on the campus. By this, they want to control me; they poisoned my mind and spirit. They crammed my mind with negative, hostile thoughts which are opposite to patriotism for new China, and I was frighten to be patriotic. Whenever I listened to the political reporting, I heard the brilliant achievements in my country and how the young generation is cared for in our country, and how the Communist Party opens up a bright future for the youth. I have also been moved and struggled mentally whenever I watched the political report (our school organised us to watch it). Sometimes I was moved to tears secretly, but I thought of the words by Watchman Nee and the anti-revolutionary group, then I felt unease that I was moved by the movie, then I felt guilty of sins, and desperately tried to use their words to conceal this ideological struggle. Under their influence, I became a person who is disheartened, double-faced toward my country and my people, without any patriotism, [I was] a person who did not care or was even indifferent to the new look of my country. From liberation of Shanghai to the end of last year, I have not even been to the Shanghai First Department Store, even when I was walking there I did not dare to look at the windows on both sides of the street, I was afraid to lose my spirituality. I went to worship at the church on Nanyang Road, I passed by the Sino-Soviet Friendship Building each time, I really wanted to look at the star on the tip of the building, because the star is beautiful in red, but I did not have the courage to look up, being afraid of temptation, sometimes I saw the star occasionally, as if I was guilty [of something].

When the "counter-insurgency" campaign started, Watchman Nee’s group was in panic. The anti-revolutionist Wang Peizhen had talked with me a few times, saying that, "in the future sharing the gospel would be in blood.” "This is a test for you,” and more viciously said, "the government is our enemy”. He also told me not to be "afraid of them” and to learn to "resist the revolutionaries and refused to answer their questions”. If they are innocent, why were they so nervous about the counter-insurgency campaign? Why did they ask us not to answer the questioning? Why did they encourage us to bleed and die? They did this in the hope that they could use us to conceal the truth of being anti-revolutionists.

For months, the party members in Organisation Department had patiently taught me. I finally awakened, hated them, and uncovered their ugly anti-revolutionary activities. I deeply felt, Watchman Nee’s anti-revolutionary group are not, so-called, "brothers and sisters,", but a group of the most dangerous wolves in sheep's clothing. They are guilty of poisoning the youth. If they killed me, just one person would die, but they intentionally did not do so, instead, [they] more viciously let me maintain an image of a normal young student, an outward appearance of a "saint", and poisoned my heart, then [they] utilised me to mislead more young people.

It is sunshine and freedom everywhere [in] our motherland, but the anti-revolutionists throw our youth into the refrigerator, stuff our nostrils with cotton, and forced us to live suffocated lives, completely uncomfortable and suffering unnecessary pains; following them into a dead end to be against the people. Now the government arrested this group of anti-revolutionists, which is really an uplifting thing! [As} In the past, [and] as aperson who had stayed with them and [was] deceived by them to conduct activities against the people's interests, I hope you will thoroughly explain your problems, to stand on the side of the people, uncovering the Watchman Nee’s anti-revolutionary group for their crime, fighting against the anti-revolutionist ruthlessly.

Comment Addition: The last statement by Dr Hsu is addressed to other believers in the Shanghai Christian Assembly encouraging them to denounce Nee.

I had this translation (above) made in China a few years ago.

Finally, if we are serious about revival then it is unlikely that we will move into its meaning until it comes by others' hands. And that is what my below article was intended to say. And that, I believe is what Blaine intended to say.

Revival In The Church

Revival is a term that many saints hold to in order to look for an answer to their own lives as well as the lives of other saints. The emphasis is sometimes broader and includes a revival of society generally. The question we must ask ourselves is how that way of looking at recovery is either helpful or else entirely accurate if we believe that revival is a panacea for the saints and for society. When we examine the lives of the saints after restoration ”“ also how society is changed after improvement ”“ what will we see? We must be honest, and we must look. It is essential that when we do this, we also realise that the revivals that we can examine do not speak of the condition of today. They talk about the day in which they happened. And whilst they carry into the decades after revival, they are still outwith the day we live in. So whatever we do learn by looking at revival in the past, we must always hold to the condition of the day we live in to express our own hope.

If we take the Welsh revival then we would speak of Evan Roberts as a focus for research, of China, we would talk of Watchman Nee and of Scotland we would talk of Duncan Campbell. The one fact that separates these three revivals of God is so sobering that we cannot ignore it, and must say it from the very outset. China has never ceased to be revived ”“ even when persecution was most present. Wales fell into death and moral depravity after revival. The Isle of Lewis fell back into darkness. Indeed Lewis is a very sobering account, and I could personally speak in terms witnessed first hand in my own walk, after revival, that would give us cause to tremble. Whereas China has remained on fire even during the most severe persecution.

I have a reason for saying these things, and that reason is entirely to do with Britain. If we ask ourselves the questions that are most pertinent to explaining how it is that all of God’s sovereign work in revival of the saints can be so characteristically similar, so that almost every revival not only comes to an end but that its finale also marks the beginning of darkness once again, we would have to realise that the reason is because whilst God is sovereign in revival, his workmen are in authority in the Church. We do not have room here to explain this in great detail. What we can say is:

All revivals begin with a few men and women who pray, intercede and groan for the hand of God on his people, and they are all primarily directed at the condition of the churches, yet realising that the churches will be filled with new believers if revival comes. When that is established there is always God’s promise on those few people. When the time comes for revival, that promise is held before God, and He is courageously asked to meet His part in that agreement.

Duncan Campbell reported that seventy percent of all the people who were saved in the revival of the Outer Hebrides were saved with no intervention of men. They neither heard the gospel, nor were witnessed to, neither did any man or woman direct them, neither could they explain how they came to be acting as they did when they gathered in hundreds outside churches, in fields, and in homes, and outside police stations. All they knew was that they were taken by a means in which God did not contradict their needs, yet their needs were not met until God finished with them. They fell down in fields whilst at work on the harvest, fell into ditches whilst going to social events, and were ministered to by children and by anyone who it pleased God to bring to them in their moment of salvation. Entire villages were swept by the hand of God and buildings were shaken, children were caught up in a triumph of obedience, and the Kingdom of Heaven was evidenced in such children, for as it is written, of such as these is the Kingdom of Heaven. God has perfected His praise in children.

It is no wonder that we see revival of God as an answer to the church and the nation. However, what we also need to know is that both in China in the late forties and early nineteen fifties, in Lewis in the late forties and into the fifties, as well as Wales in the first decade of the twentieth century, it was the Church and not merely the world that brought harm, injury and imprisonment of the benefit of revival by the means of men’s weakness, by bitterness, by jealousy and by an instrument and effect of Satan. Some were falsely imprisoned by accusations, doctrine and unimaginable spiritual rebellion. In Lewis, doors were thrown shut in some churches as a real and visible rebellion, and the cry was to refuse God and despise His mercy.

The Mercy of God

Some of this rebellion was dealt with in the same way that God deals with all uprising in revival, He shows mercy and men are changed and become His true workmen. Committees and agreements, and an organised rebellion are evidenced in a time of revival, by the church. Moreover, when the hand of God is passed, it is the church that imprisons those who have been saved, so that by means of a jealousy of men, babes in Christ are set in chains. The same thing happened in China, and whilst others would be better witnessing of Wales, the same thing happened in Wales, also.

So here is the difference in China.

Before revival came, a few men and a few sisters were obedient. They laboured in their ministries, through their books and in their teachings all that which would be necessary for China, once Satan had the hand of imprisonment. Satan persecuted those men and women, when they bore in their bodies the cost ”“ when they were despised by many, rejected by many, and where believers who could not be as they were, yielded to Communism ”“ betrayed them ”“ becoming slaves to oppression Their obedience, in books, prayers, fasting, teaching and suffering, laid a foundation. When the time of tribulation came, they paid a further price, and many gave their lives. All others who are appointed to salvation ”“ and the church which is called to be Holy, as God is Holy ”“ could then stand in the midst of unimaginable trials, so as to be always revived. In truth, their work was broader and deeper in preparation for revival, and so when it came, they were already in that crowd of witnesses and not a voice in the midst. Many of them never saw revival other than in a modest way of evangelism. Revival came after decades of Communist oppression, yet even those who were saved and nurtured in their own day survived, and went underground. It has been their obedience based on the efforts and faithfulness of a few others before them that has given the revived church in China its ability to stay revived. At the heart of the labour of these early men and women, from the mid nineteen twenties, through to the early nineteen fifties, there has been one undoubted character. They embraced the cross unto death. And those who have followed them have remained in that same obedience.

To demonstrate this principle from the Scripture:

Christ says:

"And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto myself.”

"After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I thirst!” Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”

Then we read:

"I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

"Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church.”

If we can fathom how it is that in Christ all men are included in His death and that He says, "It is finished!” And how Paul agrees with his inclusion in Christ’s death, yet speaks that he fills up that which is lacking, or else behind in Christ’s suffering, then we can understand the difference between the church in China and the churches in other places. If not then we are destined to see revival and little lasting effect. In that outcome, we will be changed for an hour and perhaps no more than that. Whereas we live at the end of the age and we must be changed permanently otherwise we will be caught up in unnecessary suffering, and may even betray Christ as some did in China, when others paid a full price of obedience, and through their willingness, the church in China has seen the fullest revival in any place.

Note: The video referred to in this (below) article is this one. https://vimeo.com/202795336. It is necessary for us to understand that there is a time when the Lord permits us to be taken into captivity, as in the time of Jeremiah, and there is a reality that a remnant will refuse that obedience. There is a time when being taken into Babylon will require us to pray for Babylon. Only then will we find peace. And of that remnant that will not be taken into Babylon in chains they will perish in Egypt. But of that people who are taken in obedience there will also be a remnant brought back to rebuild the Lord' House. Watchman Nee saw communism coming from far off. He laboured with others, including sisters to lay down a foundation by bearing the cross of obedience. In that service he wrote The Spiritual Man some fifteen years before communism came into its throne of government. He did not advocate rebellion but set down an undoubted means by which countless others would be able to understand why their prayers in that obedience of the cross would produce revival in China. When I was in solitary confinement in 1984, within just two hours of my conversion whilst in my cell and alone having shaken my fist at God, the Lord placed one of Nee's books into my hands. The guard gave it to me and he told me that another inmate had asked him to do it because it has some Chinese characters on the cover. The reason why this other inmate wanted me to have this book was because I was a diviner whilst in prison and before I was sentenced to solitary confinement for the remainder of my sentence I used the I Ching divination method to tell other inmates about their lives. So when my cell door was closed, and being newly saved, I opened this book by Nee with some trepidation. What I found filled me utter astonishment and for that I have never ceased to be thankful to the Father in heaven. That book was The Normal Christian Life. I would encourage all of us to cease from mere words and begin to understand the unfathomable mysteries of God that have been laid before us in the Scripture and through His servants - and now are ours to digest with our rational minds - because if we are in the spirit we will also be astonished. And then our prayers will be answered.

The Cost of Obedience

The reason why I have included the below video is that it has to do with the Church in China, and in particular, in some detail, with Watchman Nee. To quote from the book in the video, "In very different ways, Lin Pu-chi and Watchman Nee built a religious foundation that would prove to be sturdy enough to support the religious revival in China today. "Lin, Jennifer. Shanghai Faithful: Betrayal and Forgiveness in a Chinese Christian Family (p. 273). Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. Kindle Edition.

It is this statement by Jennifer Lin that I wish to speak about when I talk about the cost of laying hold of the foundation of Christ Jesus. Perhaps unexpectedly I am also mindful of Lin Pu-chi as well, because although he represents, in his day, the Anglican Church, his sincere faith reveals the mercy of God. In revival, God will speak to His whole house. He will use those men who are steadfast. And despite their own failings, he will speak to all of his children. Lin Pu-chi to the Formal House, and Watchman Nee to the Informal House. This is a picture, and it is a reality of the present day, in China. If we are faithful, then it will be a testimony in our own nation also.

When we speak of the cost of laying hold of the foundation of Christ Jesus, it may not be apparent what that really means. Perhaps we would be inclined to think of the cost associated with being a Christian in a society that is becoming increasingly hostile to biblical truth. On the other hand, we may think about ourselves, and how we have been treated by other Christians. The first cost here is not apparent to many believers, especially in a western world where well-being tends to be associated with the property of personal possessions, and therefore where possessions give us a misguided sense of self-worth. Yet for all that, we may sense the difficulty that lies ahead if the direction of society continues as it is. The second cost is easier to understand if we ourselves have experienced wrongdoing through the Church, and where that wrongdoing has damaged our faith. Even in this regard, however, it may not be as clear to us as we think.

Another reality can be how life itself has treated us. This may include many experiences in our childhood, which whilst they are common in others experience, nevertheless in our own lives, weigh us down. Usually, this childhood experience falls into the realm of its psychological meaning, even when we learn later on that what we experienced as children may have had a spiritual implication of harm. The significant problem we have today, is not a lack of empathy with our childhood experiences, especially when they took the form of sexual abuse, physical and even mental abuse. It is merely that society does not have a spiritual remedy for these things and so promotes a psychological cure instead. What we can easily miss is that God does not give psychological solutions to our lives, He gives us a spiritual remedy.

Of Visions & Hope

The fact of the ministry and work of Christ, through the Cross, and the shedding of His own blood for sin, is the separating effect, from sin, and from the body of sin. We all too quickly see the blood, and that we are redeemed by it, but we miss the cross and its other meaning. It is not simply the blood of Christ shed for sin, which speaks of a propitiation, it is also death, which speaks of an end to real sin. You cannot take a dead man to the public-house for a drink ”“ even when he was given over to its effect in his life. Dead men cannot drink.

Before we are destroyed by the sins into which we so easily fall when we are injured in life, and before we condemn others who stumble, we need to see that Romans chapter six, seven and eight lay down the fuller reality of our necessary walk if we are to be found faithful when we meet the Lord. The only remedy that God has given for physical sin in our lives is the cross. We also need to comprehend that in His mercy, God has also given us men and women, who though they also stumble, and through their stumbling, they cause others to stumble in season; nevertheless, they are given as examples and ministers through whom we can grow.

The foundation that is laid is Christ, and the House that is being built is by the apostles and prophets, wherein Christ is the chief cornerstone. In Lewis and in Wales, in revival, there is no escaping that once Duncan Campbell and Evan Roberts were finished, very soon the church was brought back into imprisonment by others, and society was eventually brought back into darkness. When the hand of God passed by, then the effect of God is managed by the church. It is all the church. And we must see that whilst Duncan Campbell and Evan Roberts were not themselves guilty of any great sin, in China, Watchman Nee was dragged into prison and accused of every sin possible. He bore with that reproach and regardless of any sin that was to his account, his work and his books, as well the personal witness of those who knew him intimately, has given us a confident example of how God produces revival and continues in it through those men and women. As we seek God to address our own time, and the churches in our own dominion we must learn from those whom God has given us.

It is a testimony to the goodness and mercy of God that He has also given us men and women today who by this same means serve to bear witness of that goodness and mercy of God. We must not despise that gift of men and women, neither must we fall into an accusatory spirit, as some have done. If we do, then like Judas, whom Christ said was a devil, which in Greek means an accuser, we too will accuse others, and the mercy and goodness of God will pass us by in a day wherein we have no more time to prevaricate. It is always the church that harms the church. Persecution does not harm the church.

Todd said:

Bear if you can show me one place in scripture where we are told to actually pray that either we or others be persecuted, then I will step in line with your way of thinking.

"Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me ”‹”” ”‹nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” -- Luke 22:41-42 (CSB)

If you believe it is God's will that His people suffer for the sake of Christ and others, then when you pray for His will to be done you are praying for persecution to come.

There are so many other Scriptures that could be quoted for the idea that persecution is a blessing and is used by God for so many other blessings to come upon His people through it. Being strong through suffering is only one small component of what suffering for the Name is about. If we pray for God to make us like Christ guess what God is going to bring into your life to make you like Him. One would have to hide himself from the whole of the NT to avoid seeing that suffering is the path of holiness, fellowship and glory. If you pray for those things for yourself and want them for others in the faith, then suffering is a significant tool that God uses to bring that about. When you pray for the blessings you are praying for the instrument God uses to bring it about. That would seem obvious.

Anyway, the original point stands. Jesus prayed for persecution and knew what He was praying for when He prayed, Father, your will be done in the cross.

Robert-

You did a good job trying to sell it but I am not buying it.

There are about a million ways, maybe a million and one, to suffer without persecution. I am in total agreement that suffering happens and is a necessary part of the growth of a believer. In fact I just heard a three point sermon on this very topic yesterday morning.

If we consign everything that happens to the will of God prayer is a joke. Our only necessary prayer if that is our mindset is "Your will be done. Amen.” and then we can go on with our day.

I cannot imagine praying that a people’s horrible persecution should continue on because it must be God’s will.

Nope, my default position will always be that it is not God’s will and will therefore pray for deliverance.

I am in agreement that persecution must and will come to true believers. But I also expect true believers not under such persecution to be praying for their deliverance.

M
MrBillPro

How much more persecution should we suffer? if you live in America and don't see the persecution of millions of Christians right now, maybe you need to wake up from your dream, or crawl out from under your rock. Just because every Christian is not being stone to death, doesn't mean American Christians are not being persecuted right now. I would be more concerned for the Christians that can't recognize the persecution going on right now, because I would call these folks Sleeping Christians, because they're being persecuted mentally, if they don't recognize the persecution real believers are going through today.

It'a too bad the pre-trib theory's main attraction is that the church will be gone before real trouble and real persecution begins. Sure all that stuff is coming the notion goes but it won't really concern me because I will already be in glory. Maybe the church can't acknowledge or prepare for persecution because they have been taught they are going to get out of it

C
ccchhhrrriiisss

Hi David (docs),

I wouldn't quite phrase it that way. Most people who embrace the notion of a pre-trib "rapture" of the church doesn't necessarily believe that the Bride of Christ doesn't face persecution or tribulation. In fact, it is usually quite the opposite!

We are promised that "in this world, we will have tribulation!" Believers around the world face varying degrees of persecution and tribulation. Even today, believers in some places are at risk of being killed for their faith in Christ.

Rather, the idea of a pre-tribulation rapture is that the Bride of Christ would be protected from the wrath of God that will be poured out upon the entire world during that period known as the GREAT Tribulation.

What makes that time so "great" is that God's wrath will be poured out. Yes, Satan will know that his time is short and will hasten his grab of willing or unwitting human beings in a manner as the world has never known (and the world has known some terrible levels of tribulation).

I've always believed that Christians should be taught about all potential notions about the Lord's return. However, the focus should always on keeping our eyes on Jesus -- the Author and Finisher of our faith. That will help keep us from falling for any deceit.

We should be prepared for all manners of persecution, trials and tribulations. We should, of course, be prepared to die for our faith no matter what -- and never bend the knee to anyone but our Lord.

Pray FOR the church to be persecuted?!?!?!

That was not Paul's advice. Not at all.

1. I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people”” 2 for kings and all those in authority, THAT WE MAY LEAD PEACEFUL AND QUIET LIVES in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior - 1 Tim 2:2 (NIV) CAPS added for text emphasis

Does one actually think that persecution is needed to complete the work of Christ's blood?!?! That His blood was insufficient to do so on its own?!?!

Mere persecution cannot have a greater result and impact on the human soul than the blood of Christ. That would elevate the power of persecution over and above the power of Christ's blood.

Persecution does NOT purify the church. Only the blood of Christ purifies from sin.

M
MrBillPro

"Pray FOR the church to be persecuted?"

My opinion on this is not Biblical, it's just an assessment I have gathered from many bitter "Super Christians" that want the whole Church to live as they do. God made us all different, for different purposes, we are not supposed to be a carbon copy of other Christians, but there's a lot that think so.

Some Christians have become so wrapped up in their own spirituality, they often forget some of us are still under construction, I know I am. So many Christians develop the attitude, if your not going to live the life I'm living, "which in their world is the perfect life" I wish judgement or harm upon you, I actually seen this play out within the Church building walls, sad but true.

What these bitter Christians may not understand is, they are the Church also, so they will be persecuted also, unless they figure in their own minds God has a special safe place for them. We all need to think outside the box here, there are also many mentally disturbed Christians running around, I have personally witnessed a few in my life.

Your post is so hopeless!

"America, particularly the American evangelical church, will never see revival."

"Never" is an eternal word...

Your post should read:

"We will see revival when we have reached a point of desperation that will drive us to our faces before God and to cry out to him."

Try a little hope!!

As Christians... we see things through the eyes of faith and trust in a merciful God!!!

Keeps the wrinkles off our face!

Well, the premise still stands I think. Much of the church acknowledges we are part of increasing persecution today but the teaching is when it reaches its fiercest and most unparalleled intensity at the end of the age the church will have escaped it all and already be in glory. It is often a point said to be proven by the mention of a few church fathers who have certain quotes attributed to them that prove a pre-trib rapture. Yet in spite of these, any fair and objective assessment of the early church fathers proves beyond a doubt that 90% or more of them never remotely spoke of a pre-trib rapture. It was unknown to them yet modern day proponents of the pre-trib notion won't go there. The small 10% is enough. Many pre-trib believers love Israel and speak of their commitment to stand with them at any time or cost but when the final time of Jacob's trouble comes it will be Jacob's problem and not our because we will be gone is the real bottom line.

Then there is the much ignored teaching that presently accompanies the pre-trib belief. That teaching is that tribulation saints who come to faith during the tribulation by placing their faith in Christ and His atoning blood and sacrifice WILL NOT EVER be part of the church. They are another group of saints altogether and although saved they will not be indwelled by the Holy Spirit. J. N. Darby was the first person in church history to ever propose such a novelty that indeed approaches to the level of outright heresy. It's time to get real up front and acknowledge these things. I believe that the Bible teaches that anyone anywhere at anytime in any dispensation that places their faith in Christ's sacrifice and His cleansing blood are indeed part of the church. Why aren't the famous leaders who are household names today that are teaching this separation (one group that is saved is the church and the other group that is saved is not the church) being questioned about it? There's no more time for dilly dallying around. Either these things are true or they are error.

Saints during the great tribulation are pictured as: "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives unto the death." (Rev 12:11)

Above all, the number one attraction to the pre-trib theory is the physical preservation of one's life during this time. "We are going to get out of it right when it really begins. No need to worry." The saints in Rev 12:11 are not worried about their physical life - they have laid it on the altar also. They love not even their own lives unto death. It's a grand and majestic power filled portrayal that God is going to raise up such a group of saints at that time. What reward will they lose if they perish during this time? They are pictured as OVERCOMING! And if they are overcoming by the blood of the Lamb how can it be said they are NOT PART OF THE CHURCH??!!

Much needs to be looked at these days regarding the pre-trib theory and the never before heard teachings that presently accompany it.

Thank you and blessings.

Persecution does NOT purify the church.

The blood of Christ purifies His Church.

All persecution does is drive out those who are either not actually believers or who fade at persecution.

Persecution does NOT purify. It only seems that way to some because the marginal ones withdraw.

Hi David (docs),

I understand that there are people who believe that Christians shouldn't be forced to experience persecution or trials. However, this isn't confined to people who believe in a pre-tribulation rapture.

I've spoken with post-trib individuals who embrace the same sort of beliefs. I suspect it is an issue in which they're unaware of what the Bible actually teaches about such matters. The hyper-prosperity "name it-claim it" movement went a long way in spreading such deception.

At the same time, I disagree with the notion that Mr. Darby "invented" the concept of the "rapture." Many anti-rapture publications claim this and it is simply untrue.

Please correct me if I am incorrect, but it seems that you're suggesting that an apparent lack of specific mention of the "rapture" by early church leaders somehow indicates that the concept is a modern invention. I find this method of thinking to be an error.

First of all, there just isn't a whole lot of writing from the early church still available (aside from the Word of God). What we do have is surviving letters or instructions. Yet, all of this is suspect too. It can only tell us what certain individuals (and their followers) believed at the time. From the Book of Acts and the epistles, we know that there was already creeping corruption and deception at very early times in church history.

As you've mentioned, there is indication of a belief in the post-John early church. Early church figures such as Irenaeus, Cyprian and Ephraim wrote things that seemingly indicate a belief that the Bride of Christ would either be gathered prior to the pouring of God's wrath upon the world or, in the very least, gathered and protected from it throughout its disbursement.

Of course, this doesn't mean that such men were right (or wrong) on this matter. It simply indicates that it was a concept known in these early time periods.

When people ask me about my beliefs, I let them know that I really don't know. Academically speaking, I consider myself scholarly. I am well-versed in the Word of God. I have studied this subject thoroughly for years. Yet, I cannot state with absolute certainty whether there will or will not be a "gathering" of the Bride of Christ before the Wrath of God is poured out during that period known as the Great Tribulation.

I still lean toward this idea. However, I have not reached a conclusion. I prefer to share various alternatives with the admonition that we should always "watch and pray" and be prepared for whatever may come.

I am careful to explain that even the idea of a "rapture" is not an escape from the troubles, trials and tribulations of this life. We will face varying degrees of trials and tribulations. We will be persecuted for His Name. Yet, despite all manners of trials and persecutions (including those believers throughout history who have faced death), we can be joyful in the hope that accompanies the eternal salvation that comes with our faith in Christ.

Irenaeus:

"And they (the ten kings) shall...give their kingdom to the beast, and put the Church to flight ("Against Heresies" V, 26,1).

"But he (John) indicates the number of the name (Antichrist, 666) now, that when this man comes we may avoid him, being aware who he is ("Against Heresies," V, 30,4).

Irenaeus also places the resurrection of the Church after the rule of the Antichrist and in conjunction with the resurrection of OT saints. ("Against Heresies" - V, 34,3; V,35,1)

Cyprian:

Cyprian comments on the purpose of the tribulational passage in the Olivet Discourse:

"With the exhortation of His foreseeing word, instructing, and teaching, and preparing, and strenghtening the people of His Church for endurance of all things to come...(Treatise VII)

Cyprian also discusses the persecution of the Christians by the Antichrist. (Treatise XI, 12)

I dont think I mentioned that Darby (and his movement) invented the pre-trib theory. What I intended to mention was that he was the first to propose that those who come to faith in Christ during the tribulation will not be part of the church and body of Christ. Him and his followers then springboarded this teaching into mainstream Christianity against the well intended advice of orthodox Christians of the day. Many household names and well known pre-trib teachers are teaching this today.
