Kir’jath-ar’ba. (the city of Arba). An early name of the city which, after the conquest, is generally known as Hebron. Jos 14:15; Jdg 1:10. The identity of Kirjath-arba with Hebron is constantly asserted. Gen 23:2; Gen 35:27; Jos 14:15; Jos 15:13; Jos 15:54; Jos 20:7; Jos 21:11.

"the city of Arba" the Anakite (Gen 13:18; Gen 23:2; Jos 14:15; Jos 15:54; Jos 20:7; Jos 21:11; Neh 11:25). Hebron was the original name, then Mamre ("the sacred grove near the town"), then Kirjath Caleb restored the name Hebron. (See HEBRON.)
