Dictionary of the Bible by James Hastings (1909)

KAIN.—1. A city in the uplands of Judah (Jos 15:57), probably to be identified with the modern Khirbet Yakîn, on a hill S.W. of Hebron, with tombs, cisterns, and other traces of an ancient town. A neighbouring sanctuary is pointed out as the tomb of Cain. 2. A clan name = the Kenites (wh. see), Num 24:22 (RV [Note: Revised Version.] ), Jdg 4:11 (RVm [Note: Revised Version margin.] ).

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia by James Orr (ed.) (1915)

kān (הקּתן, ha-ḳayin; the King James Version Cain): A town in the hill country of Judah (Jos 15:57). There is, too, apparently a reference to this place in Num 24:21, Num 24:22: “And he looked on the Kenite, and took up his parable, and said, Strong is thy dwelling-place, And thy nest is set in the rock. Nevertheless Kain shall be wasted, Until Asshur shall carry thee away captive.”

This place has been very doubtfully identified as the ruin Yukı̄n, a place on a lofty hill Southeast of Hebron, overlooking the wilderness of Judah; the tomb of Cain is shown there. See PEF, III, 312, Sh XXI.
