He’pher. (a well).

1. The youngest of the sons of Gilead, Num 26:32, and head of the family of the Hepherites. (B.C. Before 1450).

2. Son of Ashur, the "father of Tekoa." 1Ch 4:6. (B.C. About 1445).

3. The Mecherathite, one of the heroes of David’s guard. 1Ch 11:36. (B.C. 1046).

4. A place in ancient Canaan, which occurs in the lists of conquered kings. Jos 12:17. It was on the west of Jordan. Compare Jos 12:7 and 1Ki 4:10.

1. A son of Gilead (Num. xxvi. 32, xxvii. 1; Josh. xvii. 2-3). The clan was known as the Hepherites (Num. xxvi. 32). 2. One of David's captains (I Chron. xi. 36). 3. Member of the tribe of Judah (I Chron. iv. 6). 4. Royal city of the Canaanites, the site of which is unknown (Josh. xii. 17; comp. I Kings iv. 10).

HEPHER.—1. Son of Gilead the Manassite, and father of Zelophehad, Num 26:32; Num 27:1, Jos 17:2 f. (P [Note: Priestly Narrative.] ). Patronymic, Hepherites (Num 26:32). 2. One of the tribe of Judah (1Ch 4:6). 3. A Mecherathite, one of David’s beroes (1Ch 11:36). 4. A Canaanite royal city, named immediately before Aphek (Jos 12:17). The site is uncertain. The land of Hepher is mentioned in 1Ki 4:10 along with Socoh.

(1) Septuagint Ὅφερ, Hópher (Jos 12:17), a Canaanitish town mentioned between Tappuah and Aphek, unidentified.

(2) In 1Ki 4:10 a district connected with Socoh, and placed by Solomon under the direction of Benhesed of Arubboth, unidentified.
