By: Richard Gottheil, Gerson B. Levi
1. Father of Bela, king of Edon (Gen. xxxvi. 32; I Chron. i. 43). 2. Father of Balaam (Num. xxii. 5; xxiv. 3, 15; xxxi. 8; Deut. xxiii. 4; Josh. xiii. 22; Micah vi. 5). II Peter ii. 15 gives the name as "Bosor."
(1) Father of Bela, the first king of Edom (Gen 36:32; 1Ch 1:43).
(2) The father of the seer Balaam (Num 22:5; Num 24:3, Num 24:15; Num 31:8; Deu 23:4; Jos 13:22; Jos 24:9, omitted in Septuagint; Mic 6:5; 2Pe 2:15, the King James Version and the Revised Version, margin “Bosor”).
Beor, the father of Balaam, is named in 2Pe_2:15 (Authorized Version , with some ancient authorities, Bosor, which may be a corruption of Pethor [Grotius], or may be due to the Greek sibilant taking the place of the Heb. guttural [Vitringa]). Balaam by his great wisdom became vain, so a fool (ben be‘ôr), said Jerus. Targ. to Num_22:5; cf. Jewish Encyclopedia ii. 468; C. Vitringa, Observ. Sacrœ, i. 936f.
