Gnomon of the New Testament
Johann Albrecht Bengel (1687–1752) was a German Lutheran pietist clergyman and biblical scholar whose Gnomon Novi Testamenti (1742) is one of the most celebrated New Testament commentaries ever written. The word 'Gnomon' means a pointer or index, reflecting Bengel's approach of providing brief, penetrating observations that point directly to the meaning of the text. John Wesley drew heavily on Bengel's work, and it has been prized by scholars and preachers for nearly three centuries.
