Jeremiah 11
BBCJeremiah 11:1
III. JEREMIAH’S PERSONAL EXPERIENCES (Chaps. 1119) A. Jeremiah and the Men of Anathoth (Chaps. 11, 12)11:1-10 The LORD commands Jeremiah to remind the people of the covenant of the law which He gave at Sinai, of the curse on those who disobeyed and the blessings for those who obeyed. God’s unceasing reminders in the past had met with persistent refusal. Now the men of Judah are pictured as forming a conspiracy to break the covenant by forsaking God for other gods. 11:11-13 When God’s judgment falls, He will not listen to their prayers, and Judah’s innumerable gods will be powerless to save them at all. 11:14-17 Three times the prophet was told not to pray for this people (Jer_7:16; Jer_11:14; Jer_14:11). The people have no right to come to the temple with offerings as if to hide their guilt or avert their doom. Once called a beautiful Green Olive Tree by the LORD, Judah is now destined to be burned because of its idolatry. 11:18-23 The LORD informs the docile and unsuspecting prophet that the men of Anathoth have devised schemes to kill him. When he prays, he receives assurance that his adversaries will be punished.
