1 Chronicles 29
BBC1 Chronicles 29:1
29:1-9 Although King David had given so much already to the work of the temple, yet as a final offering and as an example to the people he dedicated more silver and gold from his private funds and urged the people to give liberally. Their generous response brought rejoicing to their own hearts and to the heart of the king. 29:10-19 David then offered a magnificent prayer of worship and thanksgiving. He eulogized the LORD as worthy of all honor, exalted as head over all, and as the Source of all riches and honor. He acknowledged that he and his people were unworthy to give to God, and that what they gave had come from Him anyway. He prayed that the present devotion (an upright heart, v. 17) of his people would become a permanent trait (a heart fixed on God [v. 18]), and that his son would have a loyal heart (v. 19) in building the temple. 29:20-22a When he called on the congregation to bless the LORD, they bowed low and prostrated themselves before the LORD and the king. The next day . . . they sacrificed 3000 animals, and they ate and drank before the LORD. 29:22b-25 Solomon was made . . . king a second time (v. 22; cf. 1Ch_23:1); then, after David’s death, he sat on the throne, enjoying the blessing of the Lord and the allegiance of the people. His glorious kingdom prepictures the splendor of Christ’s Millennial Reign over the entire earth. 29:26-30 First Chronicles closes with a brief summary of David’s reign. He died full of days (he was seventy), riches, and honor.
