Psalms 48

A Song and Psalme] Wherein both voice and instrument were used; the voice began, and the instrument after; And where the Inscription is a Psalme and Song, there likely the instrument began, and the voice followed. Of the former sort are, as this Psalme; to Psal. LXVI. LXXXIII. CVIII. Of the later, are Psal. LXVII. LXVIII. LXXV. LXXXVII. and XCII.

Psalms 48:2

whole earth] Or Land of Judea. As Exod. X. 15. and most likely Matth. XXVII. 45.

the sides of the North] The Temple on Mount Moriah, and the City of Jerusalem, joyned North to Mount Sion. Moriah is the North part of Sion. So Esay XIV. 13.

Psalms 48:4

the Kings were assembled] The Philistian Princes, 2 Sam. V. or those in the dayes of Jehoshaphat, 2 Chron. XX. or of Ezekiah, 2 Kings XVIII. Upon some of which occasions this Psalme seemes to be composed and inspired, Psal. XLVI. 6.

Psalms 48:5

marvailed, and were troubled] At Sions beauty, and at her strength, and their own overthrow.

Psalms 48:6

Thou breakest] As in a Shipwrack; so thou didst break them. As 2 Sam. V. 20.

Tarshish] See the Observations on 1 Kings X. 22.

East wind] See Ezek. XVII. 10. and XIX. 12. Hos. XII. 1. and Ch. XIII. 15. Jonah IV. 8.

Psalms 48:8

As we have heard] Psal. XLIV. 1.

seene] By experience.

Psalms 48:11

because of thy judgements] In confounding thine enemies, and defending the people.

Psalms 48:12

tell the towers] Mark if any of them be demolished, or hurt by the enemie.

Psalms 48:13

that ye may tell it] How God had preserved and kept them.
