Isaiah 3:1-26

I:9 Strong hold] To Nineveh.

afraid of the Ensigne] That God by his Angel had lifted up, in the slaughter of their fellowes.

whose fire is in Zion] Kept on his Altar there ever burning. Or rather, fire to burne up the enemies of him, his worship, his people.

Isaiah 3:4

children] In age, or men of childish dispositions.

Isaiah 3:5

Oppressed] Which followes of none, or of evil government.

Isaiah 3:7

I will not, &c.] Men will refuse publike imployment, to undertake the care and cure of the State, and to be Rulers in it, being so full of confusion, so perplexed and perilous as theirs then should be.

Isaiah 3:8

is ruined] And therefore for their extreme obstinacie and impudencie; as the words following do declare.

Isaiah 3:10

Say ye] A consolation to the small companie of the Godly among them, in those calamitous times.

Isaiah 3:12

As for my people] Proceeds on to declare the confusion and disorders of the times; that even boyes and women, persons so qualified, abused them, and domineered over them.

Isaiah 3:13

The Lord] He riseth up to plead and judge for his people, against those cruel oppressors.

Isaiah 3:16

Moreover, &c.] Comes from the Men to the Women.

Isaiah 3:18

tinckling ornaments] Divers names following in this wardrobe of Women, are of conjectural, rather then certaine and sure signification, to us at this day.

Isaiah 3:23

glasses] Looking-glasses; of bright brasse, or steele, or like mettal, Exod. XXXVIII. 8. Of glasse properly so called we finde no certaine mention in the Old Testament.

Isaiah 3:24

girdle] Girding. The word is used of those aprons or girdings, which of twigs twisted or wreathed, rather then leaves sowed together, our first parents made to cover their shame with.

a rent] Or rags.

burning] Sun-burning, tanning.

Isaiah 3:26

gates] Cities, Lam. I. 4.

She] The Land of Iurie, or the mother-City Ierusalem.
