Jesus Commends John The Baptist (Matthew 11:7-19) (Luke 7:24-35)
As these men were goingaway,Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?8“But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in softclothing? Those who wear softclothingare in kings’ palaces!9“But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet.
“This is the one about whom it is written, ‘BEHOLD, ISENDMY MESSENGERAHEAD OFYOU, WHO WILL PREPAREYOUR WAY BEFOREYOU.’
“Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisenanyonegreater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than Hebrews 12“From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force.13“For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John 14“And if you are willing to acceptit,John himself is Elijah who was to come.15“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
“But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places, who call out to the other children,17and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’18“For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’19“The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”
When the messengers of John had left, He began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?25“But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who are splendidly clothed and live in luxury arefoundin royal palaces!26“But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one who is more than a prophet.
“This is the one about whom it is written, ‘BEHOLD, ISENDMY MESSENGERAHEAD OFYOU, WHO WILL PREPAREYOUR WAY BEFOREYOU.’
“I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”29When all the people and the tax collectors heardthis, they acknowledged God’s justice, having been baptized with the baptism of John.30But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God’s purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by John.
“To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like?32“They are like children who sit in the market place and call to one another, and they say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’33“For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’34“The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’35“Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”
