Milestones and the Coach--A Fable
The Milestone and the Coach—a Fable We have all seen milestones set up by the roadside in the country to mark the distances.
Once upon a time, a coach which very often passed a certain milestone stopped and said, "Aren't you tired of standing there so long?" The milestone retorted, "Aren't you tired of running about so much?" "But," said the coach, "you see nothing of life, while I run about and see all that's going on." "Well," said the other, "you couldn't move unless you were drawn. All your movements are owing to a power stronger than your own. Besides, I have heard that coaches get robbed sometimes, or overturned. I am quite content to be a milestone, usefully employed in pointing out to travellers their whereabouts, and how far they are from their journey's end."
