Verses 18, 19,

This is the commentary, and the center, of all that we have just said. Man is alienated from the life of God. In the times in which we live, men would be ashamed to do what was then done openly; but this changes nothing as to the fact: whether a man is alienated from the life of God, or a heathen, it is the same thing.
