His Intense Sufferings

He writes on one occasion, " My flesh trembles and my blood almost runs cold when I look back on what I have suffered. A very large proportion of my path lies through the valley of the shadow of death."

Parts of his body, including the right arm and left side, were singularly affected. They were incapable of motion, and lost all sense of feeling externally, while in the interior parts of the limbs thus affected he experienced at intervals a most intense burning sensation, which he compared to a stream of fused metal or liquid fire coursing through his bones.
