Context — Ezekiel's Prophetic Callgenerated

3They are saying, ‘Is not the time near to build houses? The city is the cooking pot, and we are the meat.’
4Therefore prophesy against them; prophesy, O son of man!”
5And the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me and told me to declare that this is what the LORD says: “That is what you are thinking, O house of Israel; and I know the thoughts that arise in your minds.
6You have multiplied those you killed in this city and filled its streets with the dead.

Ezekiel 11:4 occurs in a setting where the people are complacent, believing they are safe and secure. God commands Ezekiel to prophesy against them, indicating that their thoughts and actions are contrary to His will. This call to prophecy serves as a warning and a declaration of judgment, highlighting the role of the prophet as a messenger of divine truth.

The Key Word הִנָּבֵ֣א, hi.na.Ve'generated

The verb נָבָא (*naba'*) means 'to prophesy' and is derived from a root that conveys the idea of speaking under divine influence. It implies a connection to the divine spirit, often associated with ecstatic utterance. In this context, Ezekiel is called to deliver a message from God, emphasizing the importance of his role as a prophet.

The imperative form indicates a direct command, underscoring the urgency of the message that Ezekiel must convey. This act of prophesying is not merely about predicting the future; it is about declaring God's judgment and truth to the people.

How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated

The verse is presented in the Berean Standard Bible, which uses prophesy consistently for the Hebrew verb נָבָא.

Sentence Structuregenerated

The main verb of the verse is הִנָּבֵ֣א, prophesy, which governs the entire command. The structure includes a prepositional phrase indicating the target of the prophecy and a repetition of the verb to emphasize the command.

The word order highlights the imperative nature of the command, with the emphasis placed on the action Ezekiel is to take as a prophet.

Septuagint Backgroundgenerated

The Septuagint translates הִנָּבֵ֣א as προφήτευσον, which carries the same meaning of declaring a prophetic message. This choice reflects the continuity of the prophetic tradition in both Hebrew and Greek contexts.

The use of προφήτευσον underscores the role of the prophet as a spokesperson for God, aligning with the Hebrew understanding of prophecy.

(1) In Anglo-Saxon, had the meaning "from," "away from" (as the strengthened form "off" has still), and was not used for genitive or possessive relations, these being expressed by special case-forms. In the Norman period, however, "of" was taken to represent the French de (a use well developed by the time of Chaucer), and in the Elizabethan period both senses of "of" were in common use. But after about 1600 the later force of the word became predominant, and in the earlier sense (which is now practically obsolete) it was replaced by other prepositions. In consequence the King James Version (and in some cases the Revised Version (British and American)) contains many uses of "of" that are no longer familiar--most of them, to be sure, causing no difficulty, but there still being a few responsible for real obscurities.
