Numbers 32:36 Summary

In Numbers 32:36, we see the Gadites building fortified cities and folds for their flocks, which shows their desire to protect and care for their people and animals. This verse teaches us about the importance of being good stewards of the resources God has given us and preparing for the future, as seen in other Bible verses such as Proverbs 21:5 and 1 Timothy 5:8. Just like the Gadites, we can trust in God's provision and care for us, as seen in Psalm 23:1-4 and Matthew 6:25-34. By applying these principles to our own lives, we can build strong foundations and provide for those around us, just like the Gadites did in Numbers 32:36.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of the fortified cities mentioned in Numbers 32:36?

The fortified cities, such as Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, were important for the protection and defense of the people of Gad, as seen in the example of Jericho in Joshua 6:1-27, which was also a fortified city.

Why did the Gadites build folds for their flocks?

The Gadites built folds for their flocks to provide a safe and secure place for their animals to graze and be protected, as mentioned in Numbers 32:36, and this practice is also seen in other parts of the Bible, such as in Genesis 29:2-3, where Jacob cared for Laban's flocks.

How does this verse relate to the overall narrative of the book of Numbers?

This verse is part of the larger story of the Israelites' journey to the Promised Land, as described in Numbers 32:1-42, and it highlights the importance of preparation and planning for the people of God, as seen in verses such as Numbers 33:53 and Deuteronomy 12:10-11.

What can we learn from the Gadites' actions in this verse?

We can learn the importance of being good stewards of the resources God has given us, as seen in the example of the Gadites building fortified cities and folds for their flocks in Numbers 32:36, and also in other Bible verses such as Matthew 25:14-30 and 1 Corinthians 4:2.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some ways I can be a good steward of the resources God has given me, just like the Gadites were with their flocks?
  2. How can I apply the principle of preparation and planning, as seen in Numbers 32:36, to my own life and spiritual journey?
  3. What are some 'fortified cities' in my life that provide me with protection and defense, and how can I trust in God's provision and care for me, as seen in Psalm 91:1-2 and Proverbs 18:10?
  4. In what ways can I build 'folds' for the 'flocks' in my life, such as my family, friends, or community, to provide for their needs and care for them, as seen in Acts 2:42-47 and 1 Timothy 5:8?

Cambridge Bible on Numbers 32:36

34–38. Many of these towns have been identified with some probability. But the list represents a tradition very different from that in Joshua 13:15-28 , and must be ultimately derived from an earlier source, though in its present form it was probably written by a priestly writer. In Joshua 13:15-28 Reuben occupies the position which is ordinarily represented on modern maps, on the south of Gad, the dividing line between them running east from about the northern point of the Dead Sea. But in the present passage Reuben’s position is not so independent. Five of the six towns assigned to them in Numbers 32:37-38 are situated in a district about midway between the Jabbok and the Arnon, and lie between Gadite towns to the north and south of them. They are thus represented as occupying an enclave within the Gadite area. Sibmah is unknown, as also are Atroth-shophan and Beth-nimrah. See G. A. Smith, Hist. Geogr. p. 567.
