Adam Clarke Bible Commentary
He that sent me - said unto me - From this we may clearly perceive that John had a most intimate acquaintance with the Divine Being; and received not only his call and mission at first, but every subsequent direction, by immediate, unequivocal inspiration. Who is fit to proclaim Jesus, but he who has continual intercourse with God; who is constantly receiving light and life from Christ their fountain; who bears a steady, uniform testimony to Jesus, even in the presence of his enemies; and who at all times abases himself, that Jesus alone may be magnified! Reformation of manners, and salvation of souls, will accompany such a person's labors whithersoever he goeth.
John Gill Bible Commentary
And I knew him not,.... That is, before he came to be baptized by him; when it was secretly suggested to him who he was, and the following signal was given him, to confirm him in it: but he that sent me to baptize with water; or "in water"; that is, God; for John's mission was from God, as in Joh 1:6, and his baptism from heaven; he had a divine warrant and commission for what he did: the same said unto me; either by an articulate voice, or by a divine impulse on his mind, or by the revelation of the Spirit: upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost; that is, the Messiah; See Gill on Mat 3:11, Mat 3:16.

He encourages the church to seek this empowerment to combat the challenges of modern society.
The True Baptist
By G.W. North0Faith in ChristBaptismMAT 28:19MRK 16:16JHN 1:33JHN 3:5ACT 2:38ACT 10:47ROM 6:4GAL 3:27EPH 2:181PE 3:21G.W. North emphasizes the transition from John the Baptist to Jesus as THE BAPTIST, highlighting that while John's baptism required true faith, so does Jesus' baptism. He explains that Jesus commanded His apostles to baptize in the name of the triune God, assuring them of His presence through the Holy Spirit. North clarifies that the apostles' practice of baptizing in Jesus' name was not a deviation from His command but a fulfillment of it, as they operated in faith and unity with Christ. The sermon underscores the importance of faith in the baptism process, both in John's time and now under Christ's ministry. Ultimately, baptism is presented as a means of access to God through the Spirit.
The Baptism of the Spirit
By Andrew Murray0Empowerment for Christian LivingBaptism Of The Holy SpiritISA 44:3LUK 4:1JHN 1:33JHN 7:38ACT 1:4ACT 2:33Andrew Murray emphasizes the significance of the Baptism of the Spirit, linking it inseparably to the Blood of the Lamb. He explains that while the message of redemption through Christ's sacrifice is more readily understood, the deeper spiritual truth of the Holy Spirit's indwelling is essential for true Christian living. Murray highlights that Jesus, who was baptized with the Spirit, is the source of this baptism for believers, enabling them to experience His presence and power in their lives. He encourages believers to seek a deeper relationship with Jesus, recognizing that the Holy Spirit empowers them to live victoriously. Ultimately, Murray calls for a faithful and obedient heart to receive the fullness of the Spirit's blessing.

The Father's declaration of love and pleasure in Jesus after His baptism serves as a powerful reminder of God's acceptance and love for all believers through Christ.
Our New-Covenant Birthright
By Zac Poonen0New CovenantHoly Spirit EmpowermentMAT 1:21MAT 3:11MRK 1:8LUK 3:16JHN 1:29JHN 1:33ACT 1:5Zac Poonen emphasizes the significance of the new covenant, highlighting that while the Holy Spirit was once limited to specific individuals under the old covenant, now He is available to all believers to reveal Jesus' glory and transform them. He points out that the New Testament begins with two essential promises: salvation from sins and baptism in the Holy Spirit, marking a new era in God's relationship with humanity. Poonen urges Christians to embrace their full birthright as children of God, which includes both salvation and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, as many have overlooked this vital aspect of their faith.
Christian Baptism Not Founded on Proselyte Baptism.
By John Gill0Authority of ChristBaptismMAT 3:6MAT 28:19JHN 1:33ACT 2:38ACT 8:36ACT 10:47ACT 16:15ACT 19:5ROM 6:4GAL 3:27John Gill argues that Christian baptism is not derived from Jewish proselyte baptism, emphasizing that the Talmuds, which document such practices, were written long after the time of Christ and John the Baptist. He points out that the Jewish baptism lacked the divine authority and solemnity that characterize Christian baptism, and that it was often associated with immoral practices. Gill asserts that John the Baptist's baptism was a new and divine institution, distinct from any Jewish customs, and that there is no evidence of infant baptism in the Jewish tradition prior to Christ. He concludes that Christian baptism must be rooted in Christ's authority rather than human traditions.

He shares powerful testimonies of answered prayers and divine interventions, illustrating the impact of living in complete union with Christ. Reidhead challenges the congregation to surrender fully to Christ, allowing Him to dwell in them and work through them for the glory of God and the salvation of the world.
The Lord's Baptism
By G.W. North0BaptismHoly SpiritMAT 3:11JHN 1:33ACT 2:38ACT 10:47G.W. North emphasizes the significance of Peter's command on the day of Pentecost, where he instructed the people to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, promising the gift of the Holy Ghost. North clarifies that while the timing of receiving the Holy Spirit in relation to water baptism is not explicitly stated, Peter's declaration marks a pivotal moment in the New Covenant, offering promises that were not available before. He points out that water baptism is a response to faith rather than a prerequisite for receiving the Holy Spirit, distinguishing it from John's baptism. The sermon highlights the transformative nature of baptism in the Christian faith and its role in the believer's journey. Ultimately, North underscores that Peter's message was groundbreaking, moving beyond previous understandings of baptism and the Holy Spirit.
Homily 10 on Matthew
By St. John Chrysostom0ISA 40:3MAT 3:1LUK 3:3JHN 1:33ACT 19:4ROM 13:121CO 6:11HEB 10:37John Chrysostom preaches about the significance of repentance and the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven, as proclaimed by John the Baptist in the wilderness of Judæa. He explains the purpose of Jesus' baptism after thirty years, emphasizing the fulfillment of all righteousness through obedience to the law. John's baptism symbolizes repentance for the remission of sins, urging people to acknowledge their sins, humble themselves, and seek God's grace and forgiveness.
He of Whom John Spake
By G.W. North0Jesus' MinistryBaptismMAT 3:11JHN 1:33ACT 1:5ACT 2:38ROM 6:41CO 12:13GAL 3:27EPH 4:5COL 2:12HEB 6:2G.W. North emphasizes the transition from John's baptism to the greater baptism that Jesus would fulfill through His death and resurrection. He explains that while John's ministry gradually ceased, Jesus retained and expanded upon it, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of baptism that transcends water. North highlights that the true essence of Jesus' ministry was not fully revealed until His own baptism into death, which was foreshadowed in John's baptism. He clarifies that water baptism was a necessary practice during Jesus' earthly ministry but should not be confused with the greater baptism that Jesus administers through the Holy Spirit. This distinction is crucial for understanding the fullness of Jesus' mission and the nature of true baptism.
