For I have not sent them, declares the LORD, and yet they are prophesying falsely in My name; therefore I will banish you, and you will perish—you and the prophets who prophesy to you.”

For I have not sent them, saith Jehovah, but they prophesy falsely in my name; that I may drive you out, and that ye may perish, ye, and the prophets that prophesy unto you.
For I have not sent them, says the Lord, but they are saying what is false in my name, so that I might send you out by force, causing destruction to come on you and on your prophets.
I didn't send them, declares the Lord, and yet they are giving false prophecies in my name. So I will expel you and you will die—you and the prophets who prophesy to you.
For I haue not sent them, saith the Lord, yet they prophecie a lie in my name, that I might cast you out, and that ye might perish, both you, and the prophets that prophecie vnto you.

15For I have not sent them, declares the LORD, and yet they are prophesying falsely in My name; therefore I will banish you, and you will perish—you and the prophets who prophesy to you.”
16Then I said to the priests and to all this people, “This is what the LORD says: Do not listen to the words of your prophets who prophesy to you, saying, ‘Look, very soon now the articles from the house of the LORD will be brought back from Babylon.’ They are prophesying to you a lie. 17Do not listen to them. Serve the king of Babylon and live! Why should this city become a ruin?Cross References

No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; when I punish them, they will collapse,” says the LORD. |
| 4 | Jeremiah 14:15–16 | Therefore this is what the LORD says about the prophets who prophesy in My name: I did not send them, yet they say, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ By sword and famine these very prophets will meet their end! And the LORD said, ‘Who will entice Ahab king of Israel to march up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?’ And one suggested this, and another that. Then a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD, and said, ‘I will entice him.’ ‘By what means?’ asked the LORD. And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.’ ‘You will surely entice him and prevail,’ said the LORD. ‘Go and do it.’ So you see, the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of these prophets of yours, and the LORD has pronounced disaster against you.” |

| 8 | Ezekiel 14:3–10 | “Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I consult with them in any way? Therefore speak to them and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘When any Israelite sets up idols in his heart and puts a wicked stumbling block before his face, and then comes to the prophet, I the LORD will answer him according to his great idolatry, so that I may take hold of the hearts of the people of Israel. For because of their idols, they are all estranged from Me.’ Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Repent and turn away from your idols; turn your faces away from all your abominations. For when any Israelite or any foreigner dwelling in Israel separates himself from Me, sets up idols in his heart, and puts a wicked stumbling block before his face, and then comes to the prophet to inquire of Me, I the LORD will answer him Myself. I will set My face against that man and make him a sign and a proverb; I will cut him off from among My people. Then you will know that I am the LORD. But if the prophet is enticed to speak a message, then it was I the LORD who enticed him, and I will stretch out My hand against him and destroy him from among My people Israel. They will bear their punishment—the punishment of the inquirer will be the same as that of the prophet— |
| 9 | Jeremiah 8:10–12 | Therefore I will give their wives to other men and their fields to new owners. For from the least of them to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; from prophet to priest, all practice deceit. I am He who knows, and I am a witness, declares the LORD.” |
Jeremiah 27:15 Summary
[This verse means that God is warning us against listening to people who claim to speak for Him, but are actually speaking lies. He says that if we listen to these false prophets, we will be punished and separated from Him, as seen in Jeremiah 27:15. This is similar to what Jesus said in Matthew 7:15, where He warned us to beware of false prophets who come in sheep's clothing. We need to be careful to only listen to and follow God's true words, as found in the Bible, and to compare everything we hear to His truth, in order to avoid being deceived.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean that the prophets were prophesying falsely in God's name?
This means that the prophets were claiming to speak for God, but their messages were not from Him, as stated in Jeremiah 27:15, and is similar to the warning in Deuteronomy 18:20, where God says He will punish any prophet who speaks in His name without being sent by Him.
Why did God say He would banish and cause the people to perish?
God said this because the people were listening to and following false prophets, rather than obeying His true messages, as seen in Jeremiah 27:15, and is also warned against in Jeremiah 14:14-15, where God says He will punish those who prophesy falsely in His name.
How can we know if a prophet or teacher is speaking truth or falsehood?
We can know by comparing their message to the Bible, as stated in Acts 17:11, and by looking for fruit in their lives, as Jesus taught in Matthew 7:15-20, and also by being aware of the warning in Jeremiah 27:15, where God condemns those who prophesy falsely in His name.
What is the consequence of following false prophets?
The consequence of following false prophets is spiritual death and separation from God, as warned in Jeremiah 27:15, and also in 2 Peter 2:1-3, where it says that false prophets will bring destruction upon themselves and their followers.
