Context — Gideon’s Army of Three Hundred
7Then the LORD said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men who lapped the water I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your hand. But all the others are to go home.”
8So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred men, who took charge of the provisions and rams’ horns of the others. And the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley. 9That night the LORD said to Gideon, “Get up and go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand.Cross References

| 1 | 1 Samuel 14:6 | Jonathan said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come, let us cross over to the outpost of these uncircumcised men. Perhaps the LORD will work on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few.” |
| 2 | Isaiah 41:14–16 | Do not fear, O worm of Jacob, O few men of Israel. I will help you,” declares the LORD. “Your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel. Behold, I will make you into a threshing sledge, new and sharp, with many teeth. You will thresh the mountains and crush them, and reduce the hills to chaff. You will winnow them, and a wind will carry them away; a gale will scatter them. But you will rejoice in the LORD; you will glory in the Holy One of Israel. |
| 3 | Judges 7:18–22 | When I and all who are with me blow our horns, then you are also to blow your horns from all around the camp and shout, ‘For the LORD and for Gideon!’” Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the changing of the guard. They blew their horns and broke the jars that were in their hands. The three companies blew their horns and shattered their jars. Holding the torches in their left hands and the horns in their right hands, they shouted, “A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!” Each Israelite took his position around the camp, and the entire Midianite army fled, crying out as they ran. And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded, the LORD set all the men in the camp against one another with their swords. The army fled to Beth-shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of Abel-meholah near Tabbath. |
Judges 7:7 Summary
[Judges 7:7 shows us that God can do great things with a small group of people who trust in Him. He chose 300 men to fight against the Midianites, not because they were strong or numerous, but because they were faithful and obedient. This verse reminds us that our trust should be in God's power, not our own abilities, as seen in Psalm 20:7 and Psalm 28:7. By trusting in God, we can accomplish great things and experience His deliverance and victory in our lives.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did God choose the 300 men who lapped the water to fight against the Midianites?
God chose these men because they were the most alert and vigilant, as seen in Judges 7:7, and He wanted to demonstrate His power and might through a small and unlikely group, similar to what He did in 1 Samuel 14:6 and 1 Samuel 17:45-47.
What can we learn from Gideon's experience about trusting in God's power?
We learn that God's power is not limited by our numbers or abilities, as seen in Judges 7:7, and that we should trust in Him to deliver us, just like it is written in Psalm 20:7 and Psalm 28:7.
How does this verse relate to the concept of spiritual warfare?
This verse shows that spiritual warfare is not just about human strength or numbers, but about trusting in God's power and guidance, as seen in Ephesians 6:10-18 and 2 Corinthians 10:3-5.
What is the significance of God telling the other men to go home?
God told the other men to go home to demonstrate that the victory would be His, not theirs, and to show that He can accomplish great things through a small and faithful group, as seen in Judges 7:7 and 1 Corinthians 1:27-29.
