Judges 2:6 Summary
After Joshua had finished leading the Israelites, they went out to claim the land that God had promised to them, each tribe going to their own special area. This was a big step of faith for the Israelites, as they had to trust that God would provide for them and help them settle into their new homes, just as He had promised in Deuteronomy 31:3. As we read this verse, we can remember that God has also given us a spiritual inheritance, and that we can trust Him to guide and provide for us as we follow Him, just as He did for the Israelites. By looking to God's promises, such as those found in Psalm 37:3-7, we can have confidence and peace as we navigate our own 'promised land'.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean for Joshua to have dismissed the people?
This means that Joshua, as the leader of the Israelites, had given them permission to leave his presence and return to their homes, as seen in Judges 2:6, after they had finished their time of weeping and sacrifice at Bochim, as mentioned in Judges 2:4-5.
Why did the Israelites go out to take possession of the land?
The Israelites went out to take possession of the land because God had promised it to them as their inheritance, as seen in Joshua 1:2-4 and Deuteronomy 1:8, and now that Joshua had dismissed them, it was time for each tribe to claim their allotted portion.
What is the significance of each Israelite going to their own inheritance?
This signifies that each tribe and family had a specific role and place in the promised land, as outlined in Joshua 13-21, and that they were to trust God to provide for them and guide them in their new homes, just as He had promised in Deuteronomy 31:3 and Joshua 1:6-7.
How does this verse relate to the rest of the book of Judges?
This verse marks a turning point in the book of Judges, as it transitions from the leadership of Joshua to the period of the judges, and sets the stage for the Israelites' struggles with obedience and faithfulness to God, as seen in Judges 2:10 and following chapters.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways that I can, like the Israelites, take possession of the spiritual inheritance that God has given me?
- How can I trust God to provide for me and guide me in my own 'promised land', whether that be a new job, a new home, or a new season of life?
- What are some things that I can do to remember and honor the leaders and mentors that God has placed in my life, just as the Israelites honored Joshua?
- In what ways can I, like the Israelites, be faithful to the promises and commands that God has given me, and how can I avoid the mistakes of the past?
