Ezra 8:11 Summary

This verse tells us about a man named Zechariah who was a leader of the descendants of Bebai, and he had 28 men with him as they returned to Jerusalem with Ezra. It shows that every person and family has a role to play in God's plan, no matter how big or small, as seen in (1 Corinthians 12:12-31) and (Romans 11:25-36). Just like Zechariah and the descendants of Bebai, we can trust God and be faithful in our own roles, even when the task seems small or challenging, as encouraged in (Matthew 25:14-30) and (Luke 16:1-13). By working together and being obedient to God, we can achieve great things and bring glory to Him, as stated in (Nehemiah 2:20) and (Isaiah 43:1-7).

Frequently Asked Questions

Who was Zechariah son of Bebai and what was his role?

Zechariah son of Bebai was a leader of the descendants of Bebai who returned to Jerusalem with Ezra, as seen in Ezra 8:11, and his role was to help lead and organize the group of 28 men who accompanied him on this journey, similar to other leaders mentioned in Ezra 8:9-10 and Ezra 8:12-13.

Why is it significant that Zechariah had only 28 men with him?

The smaller number of men with Zechariah, compared to other groups like the 218 men with Obadiah in Ezra 8:9, may indicate that the descendants of Bebai were a smaller family or clan, but their participation was still important for the success of the journey and the rebuilding of Jerusalem, as emphasized in Ezra 7:27-28 and Nehemiah 2:20.

What can we learn from the fact that the descendants of Bebai are mentioned specifically in this verse?

The mention of the descendants of Bebai in Ezra 8:11 highlights the importance of individual families and clans in the history of God's people, as seen in 1 Chronicles 9:1-44 and Nehemiah 11:1-12:26, and reminds us that every person and family has a role to play in God's plan, as stated in Romans 11:25-36 and 1 Corinthians 12:12-31.

How does this verse relate to the broader story of the Israelites' return to Jerusalem?

Ezra 8:11 is part of the larger narrative of the Israelites' return to Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile, as described in Ezra 1:1-5 and Nehemiah 1:1-4, and it shows how different families and leaders contributed to this effort, demonstrating God's faithfulness to His people, as promised in Deuteronomy 30:1-10 and Isaiah 43:1-7.

Reflection Questions

  1. What role do I have to play in God's plan, and how can I be faithful in that role, as seen in Romans 12:1-8 and 1 Peter 4:10-11?
  2. How can I learn from the example of Zechariah and the descendants of Bebai to trust God and be obedient, even when the task seems small or challenging, as encouraged in Matthew 25:14-30 and Luke 16:1-13?
  3. What are some ways that my family or community can work together to achieve a common goal, as seen in Ezra 8:1-14 and Nehemiah 4:1-23?
  4. How can I balance the desire to be part of a larger group or movement with the importance of individual and family contributions, as discussed in 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 and Ephesians 4:1-16?

Cambridge Bible on Ezra 8:11

3–14. The register of the laity or “the men of the people of Israel” as in Ezra 2:2. The names of these houses with the exception of Shechaniah (Ezra 8:5) and Shelomith (Ezra 8:10) appear also in chap. 2 and Nehemiah 7. But it is most probable that the text has in the case of both these exceptions suffered (see notes on the verses), and that the houses of Zattu and Bani (Ezra 2:8; Ezra 2:10) are represented by Shechaniah and Shelomith. Twelve households are represented by their chiefs and the number of their males given. The number ‘twelve’ was perhaps designedly taken to symbolize the united Israel.
