Context — Waters from under the Temple
11But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt.
12Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of all kinds will grow. Their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. Each month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will be used for food and their leaves for healing.” 13This is what the Lord GOD says: “These are the boundaries by which you are to divide the land as an inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel; Joseph shall receive two portions.Cross References

| 7 | 2 Peter 2:19–22 | They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves to depravity. For a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. If indeed they have escaped the corruption of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, only to be entangled and overcome by it again, their final condition is worse than it was at first. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than to have known it and then to turn away from the holy commandment passed on to them. | 8 | Hebrews 10:26–31 | If we deliberately go on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no further sacrifice for sins remains, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume all adversaries. How much more severely do you think one deserves to be punished who has trampled on the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge His people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. |

For land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is tended receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless, and its curse is imminent. In the end it will be burned. |
Ezekiel 47:11 Summary
Ezekiel 47:11 tells us that some areas will not be changed by God's power, and will remain salty and unfruitful. This is a reminder that, as believers, we need to be open to God's Spirit and allow Him to work in our lives, just like the river in Ezekiel 47:9 brings life and abundance. If we are not receptive to His presence, we can become like the swamps and marshes, lacking the fruit and healing that come from a vibrant relationship with God (John 15:1-5, Galatians 5:22-23). By surrendering to God and allowing His Spirit to flow through us, we can produce fruit that brings joy and nourishment to others.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Bible mean by 'swamps and marshes' in Ezekiel 47:11?
The 'swamps and marshes' in this verse refer to areas that are not conducive to spiritual growth or renewal, much like the salt that is left behind, as seen in the contrast with the fresh waters of the river in Ezekiel 47:9, which bring life and abundance, similar to the living water mentioned in John 4:14.
Why are the swamps and marshes left for salt?
The swamps and marshes are left for salt because they represent areas that are not receptive to the life-giving power of God, as seen in the contrast with the fruitful trees in Ezekiel 47:12, which are nourished by the river and produce fruit for food and healing, much like the tree of life in Revelation 22:2.
Is this verse talking about a physical place or a spiritual concept?
While Ezekiel 47:11 describes a physical scenario, it also carries spiritual significance, as the river and its effects can be seen as a symbol of the Holy Spirit and His work in our lives, as mentioned in Ezekiel 36:27 and Joel 3:18.
How does this verse relate to our daily lives as believers?
This verse reminds us that, as believers, we are called to be receptive to the life-giving power of God, allowing His Spirit to flow through us and produce fruit, as seen in Galatians 5:22-23, and to avoid becoming like the swamps and marshes, which are unresponsive to His presence.
Reflection Questions

- How can I position myself to receive the refreshing and rejuvenating power of the Holy Spirit, as symbolized by the river in Ezekiel 47:9?
- In what ways can I be like the trees in Ezekiel 47:12, producing fruit for the benefit of others and bringing glory to God?
- What are some practical steps I can take to ensure that my heart and mind are receptive to the work of the Holy Spirit, and not like the salt-filled swamps and marshes?
