Ezekiel 42:2 Summary

The verse describes a building that is a hundred cubits long and fifty cubits wide, with its door facing north. This building is part of a larger Temple complex, and its dimensions may symbolize perfection and completeness, as seen in other biblical structures (Revelation 21:16). The orientation of the door facing north could emphasize the importance of facing and worshiping towards the holy place (1 Kings 8:30). As we reflect on this verse, we can think about how we can face and worship God in our own lives, and strive for completeness and perfection in our relationship with Him.

Gill's Exposition on Ezekiel 42:2

Before the length of an hundred cubits was the north door,.... That is, the north door of the house opened to a space that lay between that and the chambers, which was a hundred cubits long: and the

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Ezekiel 42:2

Before the length of an hundred cubits was the north door, and the breadth was fifty cubits. Before the length of an hundred cubits was the north door - i:e., before "the separate place," which was that length (Ezekiel 41:13).

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Ezekiel 42:2

The temple, of one hundred cubits long, and of fifty broad, was on the south prospect of these chambers; or, possibly, this north door did give entrance into buildings that were one hundred cubits long and fifty cubits broad.

Trapp's Commentary on Ezekiel 42:2

Ezekiel 42:2 Before the length of an hundred cubits [was] the north door, and the breadth [was] fifty cubits.Ver. 2. Before the length of an hundred cubits.] The measure mentioned in this chapter, and whatsoever followeth touching the division of the land, the seats of the tribes, the portions allotted to the prince, priests, and Levites, the manner of their sacrifices and oblations, are all new, varying from that which is in Moses (though for their weakness by those outward things he shadoweth heavenly), to show both the abrogating of the legal ceremonies and the establishing of a spiritual Christian Church, the magnificence whereof is here set forth to the prophet by the Lord Christ, qui mystagogus noster est, who is our God, and will be "our guide even unto death." "The Calling of the Jew," by Finch.

Ellicott's Commentary on Ezekiel 42:2

(2) Before the length.—This verse is still a part of the same sentence, and means, “he brought me before the long side of 100 cubits with the door toward the north, and the breadth 50 cubits.” The entrance being on the north was necessarily in the outer court, and the whole description requires that the long way of the building should be east and west. The width therefore of 50 cubits projected into the court just as far as the gateways of the inner court. The measurements of this “chamber” are external, since the prophet did not enter it.

Cambridge Bible on Ezekiel 42:2

2. Ezekiel 42:2 states the precise place where the prophet was brought to—it was in front of, or so as to face, the longer wing of chambers, or the walk of 100 cubits before them, i.e. he was slightly to the N. of this longer wing, and to the E. of the whole block. This seems more natural than to suppose the “length of 100 cubits” to be the separate place. Probably, Fig. 3, Q. was the north door] As above: with the doors toward the north (Ezekiel 42:4). This is rather hard in construction, and for “with the doors” might be read: on the side toward the N. (peath for pethaḥ ?). So LXX. The breadth N. to S. of the whole block of chambers was 50 cubits (cf. Ezekiel 42:4).

Barnes' Notes on Ezekiel 42:2

He brought me “before” a row of chambers 100 cubits long, east and west. “The door” of which lay on the north side of the chambers.

Whedon's Commentary on Ezekiel 42:2

1-3. Toy renders: “Then he took me out to the outer court on the north and thence led me to the chamber building which faced the temple court on the south and the hall building on the north.
