Context — Word of Jerusalem’s Fall
26You have relied on your swords, you have committed detestable acts, and each of you has defiled his neighbor’s wife. Should you then possess the land?’
27Tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘As surely as I live, those in the ruins will fall by the sword, those in the open field I will give to be devoured by wild animals, and those in the strongholds and caves will die by plague. 28I will make the land a desolate waste, and the pride of her strength will come to an end. The mountains of Israel will become desolate, so that no one will pass through.Cross References

Ezekiel 33:26 Summary
[This verse is saying that the Israelites were trusting in their own strength and doing many bad things, such as cheating on their spouses, and because of this, they would not be able to keep the land that God had promised them. As it says in Proverbs 28:13, 'Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.' We can learn from this that our actions have consequences, and that we must seek to live a life that is pleasing to God. By trusting in God and following His laws, as seen in Psalm 37:3-4, we can experience His blessing and live a life of purpose and meaning.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to 'rely on your swords' in Ezekiel 33:26?
To rely on your swords means to trust in your own strength and military power, rather than in God, as seen in Psalm 44:6, which says, 'I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory.'
What are the 'detestable acts' mentioned in Ezekiel 33:26?
The detestable acts referred to in this verse are likely the idolatrous practices and immoral behaviors condemned by God in Leviticus 18:6-30 and Deuteronomy 18:9-12, which include incest, adultery, and child sacrifice.
How does this verse relate to the concept of possessing the land?
In this verse, God is saying that the Israelites' sinful actions, such as defiling their neighbor's wife, make it impossible for them to possess the land, as stated in Leviticus 18:28, which warns that if the people do not follow God's laws, the land will vomit them out.
What is the significance of defiling one's neighbor's wife in this context?
Defiling one's neighbor's wife is a serious offense against God and against the community, as seen in Exodus 20:17, which prohibits adultery, and is a symptom of a deeper spiritual problem, as Jesus teaches in Matthew 15:19, that out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, and other sins.
