Exodus 40:17 Summary

This verse tells us that the tabernacle, a special tent where the Israelites would worship God, was set up on a very specific day. This was an important moment for the Israelites, as it marked the beginning of their new life of worship and obedience to God, as seen in Exodus 12:2 and Exodus 29:43-46. Just like the Israelites, we can create a special space in our hearts to worship and serve God, and we can learn from Moses' example of careful obedience to God's instructions, as seen in Exodus 40:16 and Deuteronomy 12:32. By doing so, we can experience God's presence and blessings in our lives, just as the Israelites did in Exodus 40:34-38.

Ellicott's Commentary on Exodus 40:17

THE OF THE .(17) On the first day of the month . . . the tabernacle was reared up.—The Tabernacle was so constructed as to be capable of being rapidly both put together and taken to pieces. The erection of the framework, and the stretching upon it of the fine linen and goats’-hair coverings, must have been the main difficulty. But the family of Abraham had been familiar with tent life from the time of its quitting Ur of the Chaldees to the descent into Egypt, and its location in Egypt on the borders of the desert, in close neighbourhood to various nomadic races, had kept up its familiarity with tents, their structure, and the most approved methods of pitching and striking them. Thus it is not surprisiug that the first erection was completed in less than a day.
