Exodus 26:20 Summary

The verse Exodus 26:20 tells us that twenty frames were made for the north side of the tabernacle, just like for the south side, showing us God's desire for balance and order. This attention to detail in the tabernacle's construction teaches us about God's nature and His desire for us to follow His instructions carefully, as seen in Deuteronomy 12:32. Just as each part of the tabernacle had a purpose, we each have a role to play in the body of Christ, working together in harmony, as described in 1 Corinthians 12:12-31. By following God's instructions and working together, we can reflect God's perfection and order in our lives, just like the carefully constructed tabernacle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the frames for the north side of the tabernacle the same as the south side?

The symmetry in the construction of the tabernacle reflects the order and perfection of God's creation, as seen in Exodus 26:18, where twenty frames are also made for the south side, emphasizing God's attention to detail and desire for balance.

What is the significance of the number twenty in the construction of the tabernacle?

The number twenty may signify the completeness or perfection of the structure, as it is repeated in Exodus 26:18 for the south side and in Exodus 26:20 for the north side, highlighting the careful planning and purpose in the tabernacle's design, similar to the completeness found in the creation story in Genesis 1:31.

How does the construction of the tabernacle relate to the New Testament concept of the church as the body of Christ?

Just as the tabernacle was carefully constructed with each part playing a vital role, the church is also composed of many members, each with unique gifts and functions, working together in harmony, as described in 1 Corinthians 12:12-31, to form the body of Christ.

What can we learn from the detailed instructions given for the tabernacle's construction?

The detailed instructions for the tabernacle's construction, as seen in Exodus 26:20 and surrounding verses, demonstrate God's desire for obedience and attention to detail, teaching us the importance of following God's instructions carefully, as emphasized in Deuteronomy 12:32 and reinforced in the New Testament in 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

Reflection Questions

  1. What does the symmetry in the tabernacle's construction teach us about God's character and desire for order in our lives?
  2. How can we, as members of the body of Christ, work together in harmony like the carefully constructed parts of the tabernacle?
  3. In what ways can we apply the principle of attention to detail, as seen in the tabernacle's construction, to our own spiritual lives and service to God?
  4. What does the repetition of certain numbers, like twenty, in the construction of the tabernacle signify about God's nature and plans?
  5. How does the tabernacle, as a symbol of God's presence among His people, relate to the promise of God's presence with us today, as described in Matthew 28:20?

Ellicott's Commentary on Exodus 26:20

XXVI. THE .(1-37) The sacred tent which was to form the “House of God,” or temple, for Israel during the continuance of the people in the wilderness, and which in point of fact served them for a national sanctuary until the construction of the first temple by Solomon, is described in this chapter with a minuteness which leaves little to be desired. It is called ham-mishkân, “the dwelling,” and ha-’ohel, “the tent” (Exodus 26:36)—the former from its purpose, as being the place where God “dwelt” in a peculiar manner (Exodus 25:22); the latter from its shape and general construction, which resembled those of other tents of the period. The necessary foundation was a framework of wood. This consisted of five “pillars,” or tent-poles, in front (Exodus 26:37), graduated in height to suit the slope of the roof, and doubtless five similar ones at the back, though these are not mentioned. A ridge-pole must have connected the two central tent-poles, and over this ridge-pole the covering of the tent, which was of goats’-hair (Exodus 26:7), was no doubt strained in the ordinary way by means of cords and “pins,” or tent-pegs (Exodus 35:18). Thus an oblong square space was roofed over, which seems to have been sixty feet long by thirty broad. Within this “tent” (‘ohel) was placed the “dwelling” (mishkân). The “dwelling” was a space forty-five feet long by fifteen broad, enclosed on three sides by walls of boards (Exodus 26:18-25), and opening in front into a sort of porch formed by the projection of the “tent” beyond the “dwelling.” Towards the open air this porch was closed, wholly or partially, by a curtain (Exodus 26:36). The “dwelling” was roofed over by another “curtain,” or “hanging,” of bright colours and rich materials (Exodus 26:1-6). It was divided into two portions, called respectively “the Holy Place,” and “the Holy of Holies”—the former towards the porch, the latter away from it. These two places were separated by a “vail” hung upon four pillars (Exodus 26:31-32). Their relative size is uncertain; but it may be suspected that the Holy of Holies was the smaller of the two, and conjectured that the proportion was as one to two, the Holy of Holies being a square of fifteen feet, and the Holy Place an oblong, thirty feet long by fifteen. The whole structure was placed within an area called “the Court of the Tabernacle,” which is described in the next chapter.
