Exodus 26:17 in Multiple Translations

Two tenons must be connected to each other for each frame. Make all the frames of the tabernacle in this way.

Two tenons shall there be in one board, set in order one against another: thus shalt thou make for all the boards of the tabernacle.

Every board is to be joined to the one nearest to it by two tongues, and so for every board in the House.

Two tenons shalbe in one boarde set in order as the feete of a ladder, one against an other: thus shalt thou make for all the boardes of the Tabernacle.

two handles [are] to the one board, joined one unto another; so thou dost make for all the boards of the tabernacle;

There shall be two tenons in each board, joined to one another: thus you shall make for all the boards of the tabernacle.

Two tenons shall there be in one board, set in order one against another: thus shalt thou make for all the boards of the tabernacle.

In the sides of the boards shall be made two mortises, whereby one board may be joined to another board: and after this manner shall all the boards be prepared.

They must make two projections at the bottom of each frame. These will be to fasten the frames to the bases underneath them. They must make these projections at the bottom of each frame.

Exodus 26:17 Summary

This verse, Exodus 26:17, talks about how the frames of the tabernacle should be connected using two tenons, which is like a strong joint that holds things together. This shows us that God cares about every detail of our lives and wants us to be strong and stable, just like the tabernacle (Exodus 25:40). By following God's instructions and connecting with others in unity and harmony, we can build a strong foundation for our lives, just like the tabernacle (Matthew 7:24-25). As we reflect on this verse, we can ask ourselves how we can apply this principle of connection and unity to our own lives, and trust in God's provision and care for us.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are tenons and why are they important in the construction of the tabernacle?

Tenons are protrusions on the ends of the frames that fit into corresponding sockets, allowing the frames to be connected and providing stability to the structure, as seen in Exodus 26:17, and this design is a testament to God's attention to detail and provision for His people, as noted in Exodus 25:40.

How does the instruction to connect two tenons for each frame relate to the overall design of the tabernacle?

The connection of two tenons for each frame, as stated in Exodus 26:17, ensures the structural integrity and unity of the tabernacle, symbolizing the unity and harmony that God desires among His people, as expressed in Psalm 133:1.

What can we learn from the specificity of God's instructions for the tabernacle's construction?

The detailed instructions for the tabernacle's construction, including Exodus 26:17, demonstrate God's care and concern for every aspect of our lives, and our obedience to His instructions, no matter how small they may seem, is crucial for fulfilling His purposes, as seen in Matthew 5:18.

How does the use of acacia wood and silver bases in the tabernacle's construction relate to the instruction in Exodus 26:17?

The use of acacia wood and silver bases, as mentioned in Exodus 26:15-19, provides a sturdy foundation for the tabernacle, and the instruction to connect two tenons for each frame ensures that this foundation is secure, highlighting the importance of a strong spiritual foundation, as noted in Matthew 7:24-25.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are the 'frames' in my life that need to be connected and secured, and how can I ensure their stability and unity?
  2. In what ways can I apply the principle of attention to detail, as seen in God's instructions for the tabernacle, to my own life and service to God?
  3. How can I cultivate a sense of unity and harmony with others, just as the connected frames of the tabernacle provide a unified structure?
  4. What are some areas in my life where I need to trust in God's provision and care, just as the Israelites trusted in His instructions for the tabernacle's construction?
  5. What can I learn from the Israelites' obedience to God's instructions, and how can I apply this to my own walk with God?

Gill's Exposition on Exodus 26:17

Two tenons shall there be on one board,.... Every board was to be so cut and shaped at the lower end of it, as to have, as it were, "two hands" (r), as in the original, to enter into, lay hold on,

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Exodus 26:17

And thou shalt make boards for the tabernacle of shittim wood standing up. Boards ... of shittim wood standing up.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Exodus 26:17

Two tenons, Heb. hands, i.e. parts of the boards, so cut and framed that like hands they may take hold of and be fastened into the sockets, .

Ellicott's Commentary on Exodus 26:17

(17) Two tenons.—By “tenons” here are meant projections, probably round, from the end of each plank, made to fit into holes prepared for them in the “sockets.” They were to be “set in order one against another”: i.e., placed regularly at certain intervals, so that each corresponded in position to its fellow.

Cambridge Bible on Exodus 26:17

17. tenons] lit. hands, used fig. of supports: cf. 1 Kings 7:32-33 (EVV. axletrees; rather, diagonal stays under the body of the laver, holding the axles in their places), 35 (supports of the basin at the top), 36 (corrupt dittography from v. 35: see Skinner’s note in the Century Bible), Exodus 10:16 (of the ‘arms’ of a throne). These ‘hands,’ or tenons, as ordinarily understood, were pegs projecting underneath the bottom of the boards, to hold them firm in their sockets (v. 19). joined] the word (only here and in the ||, Exodus 36:22) means joined by a cross-piece (cf. the cognate shĕ ?labbim, 1 Kings 7:28-29†, ‘cross-pieces,’ or ‘cross-rails’ [see Skinner’s note: in EVV. misrendered ledges], and the post-Bibl. shĕ ?lîbâh, the ‘rung’ of a ladder), clamped together. The tenons of each board (or frame) were secured in their places by a clamp of metal underneath the bottom of the board. Kennedy, however (p. 660a), understands the ‘hands’ not of tenons, but of the upright sides of the ‘frame’ themselves, and would render vv. 15–17 thus: ‘And thou shalt make the frames for the Dwelling of acacia wood, standing up,—10 cubits the length of a frame, and 1½ cubits the breadth of a frame,—namely, two uprights for [so rightly, for EVV. in] each frame, joined one to another by cross-rails [see the illustr.]: thus shalt thou make for all the frames of the Dwelling.’ The translation is quite legitimate (for there is in the Heb. no ‘shall be’ in either v. 16 or v. 17), and the explanation clever: but it is difficult to feel certain that such ‘uprights’ would be called hands in Heb. The sense ‘frames’ for ḳ ?ĕ ?râshim is not dependent upon it; and it is perhaps safer to adhere to the usual rend, ‘tenons.’

Whedon's Commentary on Exodus 26:17

17. Two tenons — Small projections from the bottom of each board to set in the sockets mentioned in Exodus 26:19.
