Context — Jethro Advises Moses
19Now listen to me; I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their causes to Him.
20Teach them the statutes and laws, and show them the way to live and the work they must do. 21Furthermore, select capable men from among the people—God-fearing, trustworthy men who are averse to dishonest gain. Appoint them over the people as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.Cross References

Exodus 18:19 Summary
[Exodus 18:19 is a verse about Moses' role as a leader and representative of the people before God. It means that Moses is supposed to bring the people's problems and concerns to God and ask for His help and guidance, similar to what we see in Exodus 32:31-32. This is a big responsibility, but with God's presence and wisdom, Moses can do it, just like we can when we seek God's help in our own lives (Joshua 1:9). By following Jethro's advice, Moses can also learn to delegate tasks and share responsibilities with others, which is an important principle for all leaders (Exodus 24:1-14).]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to be a representative of the people before God?
According to Exodus 18:19, being a representative of the people before God means bringing their causes to Him, which is similar to the role of priests and prophets in the Bible, such as Moses in Exodus 32:31-32 and Ezekiel in Ezekiel 22:30.
Why is it important to have God with us when giving advice or making decisions?
Having God with us is crucial because He provides wisdom, guidance, and blessing, as seen in Exodus 18:19 and Joshua 1:9, where God's presence gives us courage and success.
What is the significance of Jethro's advice to Moses in this verse?
Jethro's advice to Moses in Exodus 18:19 is significant because it highlights the importance of delegation and sharing responsibilities, which is a principle also seen in Exodus 24:1-14 and Numbers 11:16-17, where Moses appoints leaders to help him govern the people.
How can we apply the principle of representation before God in our own lives?
We can apply this principle by praying for others, interceding on their behalf, and seeking God's guidance and wisdom, just like Moses did in Exodus 18:19 and like Jesus does for us in Hebrews 7:25, where He intercedes for us before God the Father.
