2 Kings 10:20 Summary

In 2 Kings 10:20, Jehu commands the people to proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal, which means he's calling all the people who worship Baal to come together. But, as we see in 2 Kings 10:18-19, Jehu's intention is not to worship Baal, but to destroy the servants of Baal, which is in line with God's command to eradicate idolatry in Deuteronomy 13:6-10. This shows us that God is a God of justice and righteousness, who will not tolerate idolatry, and that He sometimes uses unexpected means to achieve His purposes, as stated in Isaiah 55:8-9. We can learn from Jehu's actions that we should be careful not to compromise with the world and its idols, and instead, stand firm in our faith and allegiance to the one true God, as encouraged in 1 Corinthians 10:21-22.

No, Jehu's action was not a form of worship, but rather a clever tactic to gather the servants of Baal, as stated in 2 Kings 10:19, Jehu was acting deceptively to destroy the servants of Baal, which is in line with God's command to eradicate idolatry in Deuteronomy 13:6-10.

How does this verse relate to the overall theme of 2 Kings?

This verse is part of the larger narrative of 2 Kings, which highlights the consequences of idolatry and the importance of obedience to God, as seen in 2 Kings 10:18-22, where Jehu's actions ultimately lead to the destruction of the servants of Baal, illustrating the theme of God's judgment on idolatry, similar to 1 Kings 21:25-26.

What can we learn from Jehu's actions in this verse?

We can learn that God sometimes uses unexpected means to achieve His purposes, and that His ways are not always our ways, as stated in Isaiah 55:8-9, and that He is a God of justice and righteousness, who will not tolerate idolatry, as seen in Deuteronomy 32:4.

Ellicott's Commentary on 2 Kings 10:20

(20) Proclaim a solemn assembly.—Rather, Sanctify a solemn meeting (Isaiah 1:13). Every person who wished to attend would have to “sanctify,” or purify, himself in due form. They proclaimed—i.e., gave notice of the festival by criers “through all Israel” (2 Kings 10:21).

Cambridge Bible on 2 Kings 10:20

20. Proclaim [R.V. Sanctify] a solemn assembly] The verb is not the same which is correctly rendered ‘they proclaimed’ in the next clause. It is constantly rendered ‘Sanctify’ elsewhere. Cf. Exodus 13:12; Joshua 7:13; Joe 1:14; Joe 2:15-16; and is the word used of making a holy war. See Jeremiah 6:4; Jeremiah 51:27-28, &c., where ‘prepare’ is the appropriate translation. ‘Proclaim’ is found as the equivalent nowhere but here. a solemn assembly] The word (with a slightly different pointing) is used in Leviticus 23:36; Numbers 29:35; Deuteronomy 16:8; Nehemiah 8:18, of the solemn gatherings of God’s people for their sacred worship. Jehu by using such a term seems to be putting Baal entirely on a level with Jehovah, a proceeding that went, as he professed to do, beyond all Ahab’s practices.

Barnes' Notes on 2 Kings 10:20

A solemn assembly - Jehu applies to his proposed gathering the sacred name assigned in the Law to the chiefest festivals of Yahweh (see Leviticus 23:36; Numbers 29:35; Deuteronomy 16:8).
