1 Kings 7:8 in Multiple Translations

And the palace where Solomon would live, set further back, was of similar construction. He also made a palace like this hall for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had married.

¶ And his house where he dwelt had another court within the porch, which was of the like work. Solomon made also an house for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had taken to wife, like unto this porch.

And his house where he was to dwell, the other court within the porch, was of the like work. He made also a house for Pharaoh’s daughter (whom Solomon had taken to wife), like unto this porch.

And the house for his living-place, the other open square in the covered room, was made in the same way. And then he made a house like it for Pharaoh's daughter, whom Solomon had taken as his wife.

Solomon's own palace where he lived was in a courtyard behind the porch, made in a similar way to the Temple. He also had a palace made for Pharaoh's daughter, whom he'd married.

And in his house, where he dwelt, was an other hall more inwarde then the porche which was of the same worke. Also Salomon made an house for Pharaohs daughter (whom he had taken to wife) like vnto this porche.

As to his house where he dwelleth, the other court [is] within the porch — as this work it hath been; and a house he maketh for the daughter of Pharaoh — whom Solomon hath taken — like this porch.

His house where he was to dwell, the other court within the porch, was of the same construction. He made also a house for Pharaoh’s daughter (whom Solomon had taken as wife), like this porch.

And his house where he dwelt had another court within the porch, which was of the like work. Solomon made also a house for Pharaoh's daughter, whom he had married, like to this porch.

And in the midst of the porch, was a small house where he sat in judgment, of the like work. He made also a house for the daughter of Pharao (whom Solomon had taken to wife) of the same work, as this porch,

In the courtyard behind the Hall of Judgment they built a house for Solomon to live in that was made like the other buildings. They also built the same kind of house for his wife, who was the daughter of the king of Egypt.

1 Kings 7:8 Summary

[The verse 1 Kings 7:8 tells us that Solomon's palace was built in a similar way to the Hall of Justice, showing that Solomon valued fairness and justice in his kingdom, as seen in 1 Kings 3:9 and Proverbs 29:4. The fact that he also built a palace for his wife, the Pharaoh's daughter, shows that he cared about her and wanted to provide for her. This reminds us that God values fairness, justice, and love, and wants us to reflect these qualities in our own lives, as seen in Micah 6:8 and Matthew 22:37-40. By looking at Solomon's example, we can learn more about what it means to live a life that honors God and loves others.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the purpose of the palace mentioned in 1 Kings 7:8?

The palace mentioned in 1 Kings 7:8 was where Solomon would live, indicating it was his personal residence, set further back from the Hall of Justice, as seen in 1 Kings 7:7, where he would judge the people.

Who was the Pharaoh's daughter mentioned in this verse?

The Pharaoh's daughter mentioned in 1 Kings 7:8 refers to an Egyptian princess whom Solomon had married, as part of his alliance with Egypt, similar to the one described in 1 Kings 3:1 and 1 Kings 9:16.

What does it mean that the palace was of 'similar construction'?

The phrase 'similar construction' in 1 Kings 7:8 implies that the palace where Solomon lived was built with similar materials and design as the Hall of Justice in 1 Kings 7:7, reflecting the grandeur and beauty of Solomon's kingdom, as also seen in the construction of the temple in 1 Kings 5:1-18.

Why did Solomon build a separate palace for Pharaoh's daughter?

Solomon built a separate palace for Pharaoh's daughter, as mentioned in 1 Kings 7:8, likely as a sign of respect and to provide her with a suitable residence, reflecting the customs of the time and the alliance between Israel and Egypt, as seen in other biblical accounts such as 2 Samuel 8:14 and 1 Kings 11:1-3.

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Kings 7:8

(8-11) The residence of the king, and the separate palace for the queen, distinct from the apartments of the inferior wives and concubines, are not described; except that they lay “within the porch,” that is, in the rear in another court, and were of “like work.” This is further explained by saying that they had costly stones of great size in the foundation, and stones above, hewn and sawn from top to bottom, carefully finished on the outside towards the great court, as well as on the inside, and were in all cases roofed with cedar. Josephus tells us that the inner court was adorned with trees and fountains, and had colonnades round it; and gives an enthusiastic description of the internal decoration of the rooms, panelled up to a certain height with polished marble, with a band of highly-wrought metal-work of foliage of all kinds above this, and the rest of the wall up to the ceiling plastered and painted in colours (“ceiled with cedar, and painted with vermilion.” Jeremiah 22:14). This description is curiously confirmed and illustrated by some of the recent discoveries at Nineveh.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on 1 Kings 7:8

Verse 8. A house for Pharaoh's daughter] This appears to have been a third house; probably the whole three made but one building, and were in the same place, but distinguished from each other; the first as Solomon's palace, the second as a house of judgment, a court-house; the third, the harem, or apartments for the women.

Cambridge Bible on 1 Kings 7:8

8. And his house where he dwelt had another court within the porch, which was of the like work] It is better to leave out the italics of A V. and translate ‘And his house where he might dwell, the other court within the porch, was of the like work.’ The description has apparently been carrying us, from the front of the house of the forest, regularly more and more inward. Now we are brought to a court behind the previously mentioned porch, and in this court stood the king’s own dwelling house. It is noteworthy how little description is given to this or to the house for Pharaoh’s daughter. This probably comes to pass because the public were never admitted to these quarters. Pharaoh’s daughter] Cf. 1 Kings 3:1. The house for her probably joined the king’s residence. Josephus (Ant. viii. 5. 2) tells us that it was united with the porch of the throne, but his description is so vague that little reliance can be placed on it, and little help derived from it. The women’s apartments, as usual in the East, were removed as far from public view as possible.
